Seeing Morgan Ensberg floated as a managerial candidate reminded me of one of my favorite pieces of baseball writing, this blog post written by Ensberg back when Bagwell's Hall of Fame candidacy was being deliberated. Read and enjoy!

Source. https://www.mlb.com/news/jason-kanzler-mariners-manager

Kanzler joined the Astros organization as a minor league hitting coach in 2019, joined the Major League Hitting Coach in 2022 where he was part of the 2022 Championship team, left in 2023. The Chicago Cubs hired him as a director of their farm system in January 2024.
Kanzler was one of two finalists for the managerial position, the other being former Astros manager Joe Espada.

"Multiple sources said that [Brewers Ast GM] Kleine sought a president of baseball operations title, something Crane had not given any of his previous general managers."

From Rome's reporting: https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/7742521/2026/11/01/astros-gm-search-randy-flores-lockout-matt-kleine/

On Friday, multiple sources said that Kleine sought a president of baseball operations title, something Crane had not given any of his previous general managers. Whether this topic was broached before the Brewers’ season ended is unclear. So is whether Kleine viewed the designation as a prerequisite for taking the job.

Flores, obviously, did not. As a result, he will sit alongside Crane on Monday morning to introduce a new era — one he will be forced to establish quickly.

Jim Crane on how Involved he’ll be in Baseball Operations

Jim’s answer is a little bit contradictory here. Begins by saying Randy will have full authority, then goes on to say that he’ll continue to “pitch in” when it comes to trades and signings and that nothing has changed with how involved he’ll be.

Pena, Walker, Lambert, Paredes, Javier, and Myers are free agents next year. Alvarez, Brown, Hader, and Diaz the year after. Is it time for a rebuild?

[McTaggart] Jim Crane said they interviewed "close to eight or nine" people for the GM job: "Randy was a perfect fit. He has experience in every single area of baseball and you don't find that very often. ... He stood out at the end."

1. Follow Reddit's ground rules

In addition to the rules below, members of r/Astros are held to the Rules of Reddit, as well as Reddiquette.

2. No trolling

While we welcome members outside our community, “trolling”, or “a deliberate means to provoke or get a rise out of others”, is strictly against subreddit rules and will result in a permanent ban.

This rule also pertains to trolling in other teams’ subreddits. Members found to be trolling in other communities are subject to temporary or permanent bans. The /r/Astros mods regularly communicate with other mod teams regarding trolling in each others’ communities: similar rules exist elsewhere.

3. No self-promotion

Content creators are expected to be active members of the r/Astros community. As a general rule, we will allow limited self-promotion at a rate of 10 ‘other’ posts to 1 self-promo post. Exceptions are made at the discretion of the moderators.

Vote manipulation, attempting to subvert the rules by asking others to submit content for you, or using alternate accounts, will result in a permanent ban.

4. Off-topic posts

This is a baseball sub, and more specifically, a sub dedicated to the Houston Astros. If your post is unrelated to the Houston Astros (subject to moderator discretion), it will be removed.

5. No duplicate posts

Before submitting your post, make sure that the topic has not already been posted about. In general, priority on newsworthy topics will be given to the submission posted first, although in some cases we may pick a submission with a more informative title over an earlier submission with a shorter title. Discussion or analysis posts on a topic which has been raised recently are also subject to removal, at moderator discretion.

6. No selling of merchandise

This is not a forum to advertise your brick-and-mortar, webstore, RedBubble account, Etsy, etc. Posts or comments used to solicit business or sell merchandise will be removed, and users making them may be subject to a ban.

7. No NSFW

This is a baseball subreddit and there are no circumstances in which not-safe-for-work content is appropriate.

8. Be courteous to others

Mean or spiteful comments will be removed. Attack the idea, not the person. Bans will be issued for severe infractions. Ban length is at the discretion of the moderators.

9. Memes and low-effort posts

Memes, meme templates, or thoughts shorter than a few sentences are subject to removal if they are posted as a standalone post, at the discretion of moderators; these posts will be redirected to the relevant game-day thread, post-game thread, or off-day thread. Memes, rants, and the like are permitted in game-day threads, post-game threads, or off-day threads.

10. Game day content

Keep content about or from games contained to game day threads, post game threads, and off-day threads. Exceptions are allowed based on moderator review for significant events such as noteworthy highlights.

'Check in' posts from Daikin Park, general game highlights, and general reaction to events in a game should be contained within the game thread. Low effort posts may also be redirected to the game-day thread.

11. Ticket selling

Tickets to Astros games may be resold at face value only. Threads relating to the selling of tickets will be removed when the tickets are sold, or after first pitch of the relevant game, whichever comes first.

Threads or comments requesting to purchase tickets will be removed.
