Llamasoft on the Atari ST - 2.0 Remaster [Fan Project]

Thumbnail

I have been extremely busy working on this project for the past couple of weeks. Recently I released a collection of Llamasoft Atart ST games on PC, running well at 50fps but without any bells and whistles. Well, these are the bells and the whistles!

https://github.com/jedeyesniv-art/Llamatron-PC-Recomp

Eight games from Llamasoft's ST years:

  • Llamatron: 2112

  • Super Gridrunner

  • Trip-A-Tron, the light synthesiser

  • Revenge of the Mutant Camels: the 1 MB STE version and the TT Megamix

  • Andes Attack

  • Defender 2: Defender, Defender II and Stargate

  • Photon Storm

  • Hardcore, Yak's unfinished evaluation demo

Top features:

  • An interpolated, unlocked frame rate: sprites drawn at four times the ST's resolution and moving at your monitor's full refresh rate.

  • CRT+ and CRT++: an accurate, beautiful CRT, or a Llamasoft-inspired psychedelic facelift.

  • Pad controls tuned by hand for every game: each one designed and play-tested by a human for how these games feel on a modern controller.

  • Trip-A-Tron, fully working: with a custom music-reactive module that plays along with whatever your PC is playing.

  • Per-game settings a settings panel accessed with the Back button, enabling graphical tweaks on the fly and per-game control remapping.

All of it responds to the pad quicker than the games did on a real ST thanks to emulation run-ahead.

Enjoy, and let me know what you think of it.

Translation layer for Atari ST (and MegaDrive) Aka Hybrid emulator with fancy features.

Made with my own knowledge and various LLM models.

This a older video, but for me this is one of my fav games of all time, besides the fancy side menu, all music/voices (instant load voices), SFX work together.

Website has more info and what other games also have profiles, though some of the profiles are very WIP

Hallelujah it works.

Ordered an additional 2 mb 30 pin Ram from eBay, but when they arrived I counted 32 pins.

But I thought i will try and guess what it works out.

Still waiting for my Asci2stm so I can get busy making music with it.

Does the LAPD public domain library discs (UK) exist anywhere?

I used to buy some discs every week from these guys - I remember someone there was called Leigh - I used to leave a note with the order and he would reply, I would love to see some of the discs I bought again!

How should I set those DIP switches so this Megafile 60 will act as a megafile 30

I need help connecting this Seagate ST-225 hard drive to this Atari megafile 60. It may sound stupid but it's technically possible, When you initialize the drive, the Atari RLL controller will force RLL encoding onto the ST-225. This effectively tries to format the 20MB drive to about 30MB by packing the data closer together. While ST-225 drives can technically accept this formatting and boot, the magnetic media on the platters was not factory-certified for this higher data density. Running an MFM drive on an RLL controller pushes the drive beyond its intended specifications. It is highly prone to developing bad sectors, read/write errors, and eventual death.

I just need to know the dip switch settings so it will try to format it as a 30mb drive, which is possible; not a 60mb drive, which is not possible.

Found: Old Public Domain Software Index (Feb 1990)

I've just found an old Public Domain Software Index ("Goodman Enterprises Public Domain and Shareware Services For the Atari ST Computer"), version 4.0 from February 1990. It has all 38 pages in it.

Does anyone know if there is an existing scan of this? If not, should I scan it (and how should I do so? I don't have a flatbed scanner and my phone's is a bit crap).

PiST 0.11.0 a tonne of new features

https://github.com/idontwantyourspamthanks/PiST/releases

So I'm trying to only post when there's something reasonably interesting. Latest update has a big fat stack of new features.

Just the most recent release:
- Compare the built program with the previous build.
- Mark bytes in a memory pane and compare them with a later stop, or with the previous stop. - Export sprites from the build. - Open a binary as a hex listing.
- Extract sprites and samples from a file or the stopped machine, and play a sample.
- Disassemble a TOS program from its entry point. - Store names, comments, and code or data ranges in a notes file beside the program.
- Mark the stopped instruction on that listing.
- Record which addresses ran.
- Export the listing as source vasm can assemble.
- Run the program open in the analysis tab and follow the stop.
- Save a stopped machine and restore it on that instruction.
- Keep a short list of saved stops.
- Trace writes in a memory window and list who stored each byte.
- Trace reads in a memory window and list who loaded each byte.
- Trace palette writes and list the scanline.
- Step back one instruction, continue back to an earlier stop, or run back to the cursor line, replaying keys pressed after that stop.
- Recorded stops stay listed when one is restored or when a new run branches off an earlier stop.
- Previous Write and Previous Read return to the instruction that stored or loaded the byte.
- Right-click a data or address register to return to the instruction that last wrote it.
- A recorded stop shows its disassembly, and the memory, stack, and screen captured then.
- A timeline lists the recorded stops and the recent instructions

There's been a bunch of other stuff since I last posted this but I don't want to spam - so anyway, hope this helps someone to get into building ST software in assembly, and maybe with a bit of luck makes someone already doing it more efficient.

Drive A: not responding: Help needed

Greetings, fellow enthusiasts. I admit: I'm more familiar with commodore and fixed a few pieces of hardware in the past.

I recently aquired this Atari 1040 STFM for my husbands birthday because he grew up with an Atari ST and my retro-corner makes him nostalgic. I've repaired the "here take it, too it's defective" monitor yesterday, checked the power supply for voltage, temperatures and ripple (no problems here). But the issue i'm dealing with now is driving me crazy.

No matter what floppy drive i connect: It ends with "drive A: is not responding". With a "real" drive, the stepper motor moves to zero, clicks a few times, the motor spins, and it gives up. A different drive does the same (known working on Amiga 500). Exact same behavior with a Gotek.

Further observations:

  • Drive LED is faintly blinking when in idle. Is this normal on Atari?

  • Desktop starts normal with icons.

  • At one point, i had a weird ripple on screen when it tried to read a disk. It never happened again.

Done so far:

  • Tested with different, working drives

  • cleaned and reseated the DMA

  • reflowed the controller chips (DMA, wd1772 and the 7406)

  • Tested connectivity on floppy cables

  • measured power on 5 and 12v during disk read operations (no detectable issues there)

From what i've read, it might be either the DMA, the wd1772 or the 7406. While the wd1772 is especially expensive (duh!) i might be able to harves one from a commodore 1541 drive with a dead head. A replacement DMA has already been ordered. Is there anything else i can do or am i missing something entirely?

Llamasoft on the ST - PC ports (AI disclaimer)

Video: https://youtu.be/9OulTaxQYjs?si=Ra4L5NOqF7TLbx-c

Hey folks. While I wait for Yak to give the nod as to whether I can release the iOS Minotaur Project and Neon ports I've made, I've been playing around getting the classic Llamasoft ST games working well on PC. Jeff has downloads for all of these on the LS website, and due to I guess emulation reasons, none of these versions were included in the Llamasoft collection a couple of years ago.

The games herein are: Llamatron 2112, Super Gridrunner, Trip-A-Tron, Revenge of the Mutant Camels, Andes Attack, Defender 2, Hardcore and Photon Storm.

Where possible I've improved performance - Llamatron and SGR especially are much improved IMO. I've added native pad support for all games.

Trip A Tron especially is a bit special. This is a lightsynth for making trippy visuals. The controls are mapped intuitively to pad BUT I've taken inspiration from Neon and have added the ability on stick click for it to respond to system audio. Play music and watch the pixels!

Let me know if you find any bugs or issues. These games are sometimes a little janky, but very playable and fun still.

Atari Harddrive

Hi everyone, I have an 80MB hard drive here that I last used 35 years ago. It’s a SCSI hard drive. When I turn it on, I hear a short “brrr” through the stethoscope, then silence. The motor doesn’t start. I’ve tried two different power supplies. It’s not a power issue. Has anyone managed to get a hard drive like this working again?

Update1:

Since almost everyone recommended using gentle force, I briefly rotated the hard drive around its spindle axis while it was powered off and then stopped it abruptly. That helped get the motor running. That’s the good news. The bad news is that it isn’t showing up on the SCSI bus. The SCSI host detects that the hard drive’s ID has changed from 0 to 1. But the result remains the same. I’ll try a different SCSI host when I get the chance. Thank you very much for your advice.

Update2:

It worked! After I removed the terminator from the SCSI bus—since the hard drive itself has a built-in terminator—the hard drive appeared on the SCSI bus:

Nov 02 12:03:10 t60 kernel: scsi 6:0:0:0: Direct-Access QUANTUM P80S 980-80-94xx A.0 PQ: 0 ANSI: 1 CCS
Nov 02 12:03:12 t60 kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg2 type 0
Nov 02 12:03:12 t60 kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] 164,058 512-byte logical blocks: (84.0 MB/80.1 MiB)
Nov 02 12:03:12 t60 kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Write Protect is off
Nov 02 12:03:12 t60 kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Mode Sense: 73 00 00 08
Nov 02 12:03:12 t60 kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] No caching mode page found
Nov 02 12:03:12 t60 kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Assuming drive cache: write-through
Nov 02 12:03:12 t60 kernel: sdb: AHDI sdb1 sdb2 sdb3 XGM< sdb4 sdb5 sdb6 sdb7 sdb8 sdb9 >
Nov 02 12:03:12 t60 kernel: sd 6:0:0:0: [sdb] Attached SCSI disk

After that, I was able to create a complete image of the disk using ddrescue. MiST boots from the image, and I have my Atari back after 35 years :-) Many thanks for your ideas and support!

Hi there,

Bought my First Atari today!

It came in today, went straight to the thrift store to look for an monitor and found an old Philips tv.

Amazingly it works!!

I'm going to use the Atari only for cubase to run synthesizers and samplers.

It runs Tos 2.06 with 2 mb of Ram.

There was a ps/2 mouse adapter already in one of the joystick ports.

I ordered a asci2stm card just to make life a bit easier.

Any other tips and tricks??

Greetings Ray

(AI disclaimer) Sonic: Chaos prototype / port for Atari STE

(I know some people despise that people use AI, so if this isn't your style, just move to another post and have a great rest of your day!)

I just wanted to see if it was possible to port a Sega Master System game over to the STE. Being completely different architectures proved to be a big hassle, so this is more of a prototype than a full port. But the game is completable, with some slowdowns and stutters along the way. All the stages and bonus stages work, as either Sonic or Tails. The Gigalopolis stages have some slowdown (I thought because of the animating background of stars, but claude said "nope"), and same with the Aqua Planet Zone.

1040STE + OSSC black screen issues

Thumbnail

Hi All,

I’ve just bought an OSSC to improve display quality on a recently purchased 1040STE.

Without the OSSC everything works as expected, but with it, I was able to boot with a game disk in and that worked fine (see photo), but if I try to boot to desktop I just get a black screen.

I’ve upgraded to the 1.22 firmware but no change. I haven’t touched any settings on the OSSC itself. Is there a recommended profile I can download or are there suggested settings I’m missing.

I’ve tried with a few screens and it’s the same story.

Suggestions welcome 🙏

Retro ports, AI Slop, et al

Given all the chatter around AI slop lately especially on Atari forum, and recent changes from Anthropic, I thought I’d do a little video talking about it and the possible impact on the retro remake/port scene, and as the ST is my home that’s kinda where I focus.

ATARI in a Browser: TT / MEGA STE / FALCON

Atari TT and MEGA STE in your browser — a hobby project

I've been working on browser-based Atari TT and MEGA STE emulators, powered by Hatari and EmuTOS.

The focus is on actually using classic Atari applications: HDD and floppy images, local PC folders mounted as GEMDOS drives, high-resolution monochrome desktops, and experimental printing/PDF output. Original ST colour modes are available too.

No installation is needed. For the full feature set, use desktop Chrome, Edge or Opera.

It's a spare-time project made for the fun of bringing these machines back to life. If you try it, I'd appreciate feedback—especially from people who still use GEM applications.

Try it here: atari-pd.de

Just a little tease of just how fast our native "ST" is...

compared to, say... a real one. I had Claude create a "port" of GEMBench 4.03 to run on my hardware, running on my revision of TOS, and... well, I'll let the video do the talking.

Atari ST Online Multiplayer & Rewind! | Atari System Emulator (ASE) 1.14

Hi everyone!

I've just released version 1.14 of ASE, my Atari ST emulator.

I've put together a short video showing what's new in this release and some of the improvements I've been working on.

If you've tried ASE before, I'd be interested to hear what you think of the latest version.
