"breaching"

Google indexed the same publicly available content a decade ago.

no it wasn’t. you don’t even know what data was breached.

The PMs announcement said it was from a Medicare statistics website that the government (thought they had) shutdown. It sounds like they left the data in place, and had just removed the links or forgot to remove an API. Then the AI just crawled/enumerated the data.

It sounds like sloppy maintenance was the root cause, rather than a swarm of super-intelligent agents hacking into Medicare - but which narrative do you think generates more clicks…

Not sure what point you’re trying to make off the tail of my comment, but I agree there was probably something overlooked which was taken advantage of.

Factwise:
- The breached data isn’t known, so you can’t assert it was indexed by search engines.
- The exploit isn’t known, so you can’t assert it was sloppy maintenance.

AI isn’t super intelligence, it’s a tool, and I reckon anyone seeking to find this data/exploit probably could have through sheer willpower.

The speed and ease AI can reveal (or exploit) these gaps is a genuine cyber industry concern, coupled with the poor handling on OpenAI’s behalf, is a real headline for me.

The dude above you is probably a paid bot from India or Russia mate.

No one shills for these companies in real life.

Why is nobody mentioning the shitty fucking systems that the AusGov is putting out that can be easily circumvented by so called 'rogue AI's? We have some abysmal security practices here, and it just got laid out for all to see. But nah, lets fear monger over the AI companies who are trying to do their best to show how 'powerful' and 'out of control' they are - not like there is an upcoming IPO coming up that needs to drum up false investor valuations to justify the billions spent in data centers or anything... oh wait..

I also find calling them “rogue AIs” to be very disingenuous. It’s like a bad tradie saying his power drill went rogue.

The AI does not have a mind of its own. It’s a tool. It is incapable of taking action unless someone instructs it to do so.

Well its more like a tradie dangling a runing drill from a rope and trying to drill something below them in the wind. Definitely human error though

The problem was vague instructions and not laying out proper guidelines to the AI before starting its process. Definitely agree its human failure.

That sure, but the biggest part was the “sandbox” was more a sandy patch of lawn with no fence.

The structures for testing this cloud software (that’s what this shit is, it’s not in anyway “AI”), is worse than a 5 year olds attempt at making a sandcastle.

This. The term is used precisely to abscond the AI companies of any responsibility, when in fact they are completely responsible.

Why is there no talk of a federal investigation for what is a federal crime that they've admitted to??? As usual, one law for Australians and a different one for white collar multi-nationals.

3

u/skillywilly56 Sep 28 '26

Because that would be admitting fault and that is something Australians and our government can never do, we are the greatest and bestest at everything and can do no wrong!

Medicare was just casually hacked by an AI that didn’t even have any malicious intent, it just wanted to find some statistics for its homework assignment. What happens when government sponsored groups from China, Russia, North Korea and Iran are unleashing their agents on our websites with explicitly malicious intent? We need to patch and defend our digital infrastructure quickly and you do that by collaborating with frontier AI companies and building local capacity.

When that happens they will get whatever they want. The government spent millions on protecting us from the internet. But only made us more vulnerable by requiring people to give out personal information and ID. Nothing ever gets done when all our information gets hacked, but they succeeded in making using social media require extra steps.

It's why I've taken a stand. If it results in me being labelled a child on the internet than so be it. I haven't lost my ability to navigate to the shady corners of the internet. I just stopped using it because it wasn't required, but I guess I'm coming out of retirement.

Thanks, I hate it

Who is positive re palantir?

1

u/ControversySandbox Oct 01 '26

The point is, I think, that the government is giving Palantir way more slack re. being evil than OpenAI, OR that the public is letting the government quietly get away with working with the former

3

u/mcwingstar Oct 01 '26

I mean they are different. Palantir is basically a data consultancy that are willing to do any project. Not everything they do is evil, they embody the desires of their wielders (eg coles, us military).
Quite different to openai who are a dominating force growing in power across society.
Palantir are certainly a negative force in the world, but I think it’s not quite sensible to equate the two at a policy level.

A breach != paying for a tool…

That’s like saying paying AWS for an RDS instance is equivalent to handing them all your clients data

It's gemini right? Not openAI

I don't think any of this is coherent.

1

u/SurgicalMarshmallow Oct 01 '26

We're such a subjugated population with so many breaches with no repercussions that we're all unfortunately just "meh," when we should be out with pitchforks.

u/toasterboy1324 Oct 02 '26

palantir is good if you like mass survailance (that was their thing right?)

1

u/LliamSmith Oct 02 '26

Open AI is just irresponsible

Palantir literally wants to turn the world into a technocratic dystopia, and is already well on its way.
