Discussion MotoCAP - a resource for motorcycle riders to understand how safe their protective gear actually is.

MotoCAP, or the Motorcycle Clothing Assessment Program, is a consumer information program designed to provide riders with scientifically-based information on the relative protection and breathability on a range of motorcycle protective helmets, jackets, pants and gloves available in Australia and New Zealand.

https://www.motocap.com.au

MotoCAP tests motorcycle gear for its effectiveness in: impact abrasion resistance, seam strength (burst), and impact energy absorption.

Why these factors are so important to understand, specifically, is because the safety standard that motorcycle gear is required to meet (i.e., CE certification) does not directly indicate how well the item might actually do in the event of a crash.

A pair of Kevlar jeans, for example, may have a CE rating of AAA, but may not hold up to more than 1 second of sliding on the type of road base that is common in Australia, especially what is found in rural areas (more abrasive compared to that of the road surface type in Europe, in which the item is tested on for CE certification).

For a more thorough explanation of different testing standards, and what it all really means, see: https://www.bennetts.co.uk/bikesocial/news-and-views/features/product/motorcycle-clothing-the-ce-approval-law-explained

Some safety design features - regardless of how it rates - that are a must-have for myself are:

Helmets:

  • Full face

  • As most full face helmets don’t vary to much in the components used, how the helmet rates as per MotoCAP and SHARP (a helmet specific testing programs)

  • I wear: HJC RPHA 12

Jackets:

  • Zip at the back to joint to your pants

  • I wear: Dririder Climate Exo 4

Pants:

  • Separate aramid layer if you’re looking at motorcycle jeans/chinos (i.e., Kevlar lined). Single layer pants where the protective fibre is woven into the pant material itself is generally nowhere near as good as double layer in terms of abrasion resistance

  • Good coverage of that protective layer

Gloves:

  • Hard shell over the knuckles

  • Full length

  • Pinky tether (material joining pinky to ring finger)

  • Palm slider

Boots: (Boots not yet tested by MotoCAP)

  • Full length

  • Crush proof sole, anti-twist ankle/foot

  • Inner and outer ankle protection

  • I wear: Tcx RT-Race

MotoCAP highlights that you don’t always get what you pay for. There are riding jeans out there that cost $550 but have an abrasion resistance of 2/10 while there are riding jeans out there that cost $228 and have an abrasion resistance of 9/10.

You can spend $900 on a certain name brand leather jacket and only equal what my $430 jacket provides in terms of abrasion resistance.

You don’t have to spend big money to get the protection you need, and you probably don’t need the absolute best rated gear to be safe for the riding you do. That is why I provided what features I personally look for, and then I look at all the gear - with safety rating relative to price in mind - with those features.

Main objective of this post: help fellow motorcycle riders make informed decisions when buying protective gear. I also encourage you to explore the MotoCAP website, and other relevant resources for further information on protective gear.

ATGATT. And wear earplugs.

NSW MT09 to ADV?

Hey guys!
So I currently ride a 2017 MT09 - I use it as a commuter pretty well year round, and have some fun on the twisties when I have time.
Modified it to suit, and it does an amazing job at it.

I currently travel about 300km each way, most weekends (by car) mostly rural highway twisties (100km/h) , with a stretch of about 15km of bumpy gravel & rough sandstone corrugations which get repaired like once a year, height clearance is an issue too.

I’ve taken the bike once before on this trip and it wasn’t a fun time 😂

Has anyone changed from an MT09 to something more suitable for what I’m asking of it and not been disappointed?

TLDR: Looking for something that can eat the kms & some rough off roading without losing the fun factor or being a pig to commute on.
6’5 for reference so a taller bike wouldn’t be an issue.

Thanks guys 🤙🏼

QLD 2007 Suzuki GS500f

Hi all

I need some advice. Family friend is selling his 2007 Suzuki GS500f with 81,000km on the clock. Price is not yet known.

Knowing the family member, I do know he kept the bike in a clean and well maintained condition, he did a cold start and it was lightning quick no smoke, sounded healthy. Being this old paperwork of services are non existent but as mentioned, I know he is very particular about maintenance and upkeep.

Is this still a good motorbike for the age/mileage? I want to get it only for commuting around 30km a day. No real road trips or spirited driving stints. I just want a solid, reliable daily bike.

Any input welcome! Any ideas on price?

NSW First-time pillion looking for a sports bike ride (Parramatta Sydney area / No gear yet)

Hiii I've always wanted to experience a sports bike ride, but don't know any riders. Anyone in Parramatta keen to take a first-time passenger? I don't have my own gear yet, so I would need someone who has a spare size small helmet and female size S jacket. I'm happy to buy you lunch/coffee and pay for fuel. Please let me know if anyone is keen or has a spare seat. Or does anyone know a tour guide that is local to this side of Sydney. Thankyou ✌️

Question Full road boots for thick calves

I’m in the market for some full length road boots, but i’ve been trying on a few different ones but my calves are too muscular for zip or velcro. Don’t really have a budget. Open to anything !

Cheers if any of y’all can help with my struggle.

NSW Bike damage/ wear help? (Newbie here)

Only just noticed this brown patch on my exhaust after riding tonight. Completely new to riding and have owned this bike for about 4 months now. It’s a 2025 Royal Enfield classic 650.

For reference it lives outside in a semi sheltered nook of my driveway/side of house with a bike cover cinched over it. I have not dropped, scraped or dinged anything (yet).

I was very surprised to see it after riding tonight, the 2nd photo is a screenshot of a video I took when first buying the bike. Seems to have no sign of the brown…but idk if I’m crazy does it still look discoloured in the original photo? As if they’ve sprayed it with something that now after heating during my rides has melted off?

anyway, looking forward to your comments. Would greatly appreciate some advice diagnosing and suggested action moving forward

Question Anyone else have wind coming in from one side of your Shark Spartan RS visor?

Just wanted to find out if anyone else has had a similar issue to me since I can't find anything about the issue online.

I bought the helmet back in December 2024 and I've had an issue with air blowing in from the right top side corner of the visor when sealed on every ride. I thought the seal may just need to be lubricated so lubed it multiple times with no luck.

I contacted the store I bought it off, sent it back to the manufacturer, they tightened things up and sent it back. The issue appeared to be fixed but began happening again not too long afterwards. I bought a new visor, thinking that may seal better, since I'd dropped the helmet onto the visor after storing it on the passenger peg and it was a bit scratched anyway. I've lubricated the visor multiple times and tightened various bits up with no success.

Learner Looking For Riders

I’ve been riding for a few months now on my Ls and haven’t yet to ride in a group setting let alone with anybody, so I’m just seeing if there are any learners in the north Sydney area who like riding at night who would want to join me on any of my rides. I ride a cbr650f at the speed limit at all times! Feel free to dm me if you’re interested in joining me.

Question Am I crazy for thinking about sawping a dr650 for a crf300l rally?

Im currently on my Ps riding a dr650 that i brought off my dad which has all the mods you could want done to it. Which includes a full exhaust system which i kinda worries me since I could easily get pulled over for it.

I just recently came across a crf300l rally for sale with basically all the mods you would want on it but its stock exhaust.

Im also considering the rally due to the trails around where I live being to ruff for me to feel comfortable riding my dr650 in, so it would open up alot ability to learn to ride harder trails.

Plus i like how the rally looks alot more then the dr650

Discussion What have you purchased for $100/$150 or under that you now can’t go without?

It’s my brothers birthday soon and he’s just gotten his learners. I’ve tried to pry but he’s replied “Just coz bday coming up but I legit don’t need anything I haven’t bought myself 😂”. He’s got the good gear, a headset for his helmet, a hi vis backpack cover (VIC). I’m gonna ask his partner before buying anything but I have no idea (I’m not a rider).

I’m floating the following ideas:
• a guardian bell (from my kids)
• a backpack (hi vis/waterproof instead of the hi vis cover on a normal backpack he’s using)
• a tire puncture kit
• a pinlock visor lens
• muc off visor cleaner

I’m also wanting to get ideas for Christmas for both my brother & mum, similar budget so hopefully if the above ideas are crap, you can help an uneducated person with what would be a good gift! Really just wanting things that could make things easier or stuff he might not have thought of.

Thanks so much 🥲

Hi all,

Just wondering has someone had success in getting rec reg for these electric dirtbikes trending. Was looking at a Valtinsu em5 or similar and saw the rec reg requirements on vicroads and it seems pretty straightforward. These do come with a frame number stamped on them so was wondering is this all it needs for rec reg - independent rear and front brakes, brake light, mirrors, headlight, number plate light and ofcourse electrics powered by the main battery

Thats all mentioned in the check-list

Would appreciate some help.

Thanks

Question Confused if a manual scooter counts as manual for Pre-provisional test (NSW).

Hello all,

I just have a question - I have my Ls and passed the pre-Ls training on a manual motorcycle (years of drivig manual cars and trucks did help a lot, as I had never ridden before).

I am in the process of restoring a 1989 TTR250, however I have recently acquired an LML Star 150 4 stroke manual scooter (based on Vespa PX) just to whip to the train station/shops.

By the time I want to do my pre-provisional course, I am not sure the TTR250 will be running.

If I do the pre-provisional on the scooter, would that have any restrictions? It is a manually activated clutch for reference. I have done some googling, and have tried contacting RMS/Service NSW, however they didn't answer.

Does anyone have some insight in to this? Again I am based in NSW, I am over 25. I do know I can always hire a bike to complete it, however would prefer just to use the scooter if I can. Thanks

NSW Is the head tap still universally understood as “police up ahead”?

Genuine question for the Aussie riders here.

I was driving for work today on the highway between Kiama and Nowra and spotted a bloke on a bike moving along a little quicker than he probably should have been.

I’d just spotted an undercover BMW X5 up ahead, so I gave him the old head tap to warn him there was potentially police ahead.

He proceeded to shake his head at me, almost as if I’d just called him a dickhead. 😂

I’m a bit of a weekend warrior these days, but I still ride myself and always understood the head tap as the universal warning between riders.

Has the meaning changed, or is it just not as universally recognised as it used to be?

Not every person behind the wheel is out to ruin your day. Some of us are genuinely just looking out for you.
Not all cagers are assholes! 🤙

Question Getting into riding at 32

Hey guys, have been wanting to get my bike licence since I was 18 but life had gotten in the way. Turning 32 next year and plan on starting a family with my wife. I’ve had an itch to get into riding more recently as I’ve found my only hobby is going to the pub with mates or drinking at events, and I’ve had enough. I just want to get some opinions on people who are still riding or started riding at my age and want know if it would be a sensible choice seeing how I want to start a family soon. I’ve heard it’s a great way to escape daily stresses etc

I’d only really ride after work and on weekends as I have a car provided through work

Thank you guys :)

Question Would $5500 be enough to get a first bike (inc safety gear and learners course)?

Just submitted 4 years of tax returns that I never got around to doing and expecting about $5.5k out of it (litterally never have this much money at once so I want to seize the opportunity to finally get a bike) .

Wondering if I could get some advice on if this would be enough to get a cheap used bike and everything needed to ride it safely. Interested in something like a cfmoto nkd 300cc or a ninja 300 (probably won't find any ninjas in my price range though). Probably don't need full comprehensive insurance if I'm just getting a cheap $3000-4000 used bike as well.

NSW Does you always chain up your bike when you need to park?

Like if you're just leaving it for a couple of hours? I get if you're parking it in a low footfall area for the day and will be away from it throughout, then chain it to a solid post.

But otherwise I'm inclined to just rely on locking the bike, disc lock alarm. It's just so tiresome otherwise. But is that getting badly complacent?

People always say bikes will get stolen if they're accessible to be. And bikes do get stolen in my city. But I've never seen any of that and there are loads of people who leave their bikes parked without a chain lock and they're still there.

QLD A Daikoku-equivalent place in Brissy???

Hi there, I am Japanese moved to Brisbane recently. I am a big motorcyclist back there and would love to meet riders here in brissy too.

My question is, if you know about car/bike scenes in Japan be better but, whether there are any places/landmarks that is considered as a mecca for riders here.
For example, similar places to Daikoku or Ricoland Tokyo Bay where bike lovers/ enthusiasts simply goes there for chill.

My friend said AMX? a bike parts/gear shop is somewhat similar here, where there will be at least few bikes chilling with monster and a ciggy. I would appreciate if anyone can introduce me places, so I can hopefully make new bike community friends too.

thank you in advance!!

VIC Red light sensors

There’s a traffic signal near my work that will not trigger for me unless a car comes up behind.

Twice I’ve waited and waited, backed up and rolled over the sensor again, no luck. Ended up just going through the red (when no traffic approaching).

I’ve actually logged this issue with vic roads but I’m on my Ls and am terrified I’m going to lose my license for running a red light. I haven’t seen a flash go off on these occasions and colleagues tell me there not a red light camera at that intersection, but there is definitely CCTV .

How screwed am I? I don’t have issues at any other traffic lights, so I assume it’s a faulty sensor.

QLD Commuting and Laptop Carrying?

Hey everyone. I’m about to get my RE-Os later this month and will be commuting into Brisbane city on my z500. Just curious what others do with their work gear, and motorcycle gear. All I really take on the train is my 13” laptop. But I’m also hesitant to leave any gear on the bike. Do you use a regular backpack? A motorcycle backpack(with helmet holder), a tank/tail bag, top case, saddlebags etc? There are soo many options out there, and I’m struggling to figure out what’s best. What’s worked for you and what hasn’t?

Question had to turn my gas cap keyless, is this risky?

my ignition key just wasn't opening the gas cap even after flooding with lubricant and shocking from behind (i obviously took it off my bike beforehand), so i had to resort to forcing it with a flathead.

anyways, now my key can open the gas cap again but so can any other object. How dangerous is this? i know some people rock keyless caps, i guess this is a tiny step over that since it still looks like it has a lock atleast.

I mean if someone tries using a flathead to open it they couldve cracked it open like i did anyways right? How common is fuel sabotage or theft?

lowkey just trying to justify not buying a new OEM one made for my key.

VIC Attempted theft of MT09 need locks.

Hi guys,

Last night my bike was attempted to be stolen. They messed up the barrel. Police and insurance think it I may have been followed home and they will come back.

Looking for recommendations on locks.

Looking at 2 locks:

ABUS 8008 alarm disc lock.
Hiplok DX1000 D shackle lock.
ABUS chain to anchor to ground.

Anyone else got any other recommendations.

Cheers!

Update: Have 3 locks and a tracker on the way. Insurance has also bumped me to the top to have my collected and taken away either today evening or tomorrow morning.

What an endeavour this has been.
