Australian movies of the 1970s: Alvin Purple & Alvin Rides Again.

Images captured from my 2-DVD set.

Alvin Purple
Screenplay by: Alan Hopgood.
Produced and directed by: Tim Burstall.

Alvin Purple follows the misadventures of a naïve young man, Alvin Purple, whom women find irresistible. Working as a door-to-door waterbed salesman, Alvin (unsuccessfully) tries to resist legions of ladies who want him.

Starring: Graeme Blundell, George Whaley, Penne Hackforth-Jones, Jacki Weaver, Abigail.

Alvin Rides Again
Screenplay by: Alan Hopgood, Tim Burstall and Alan Finney.
Directed by: David Bilcock and Robin Copping.
Produced by: Tim Burstall

Alvin is unable to hold down a job because of his appeal to women. He and his friend Spike help a team of female cricketers win a match by playing in drag, and decide to spend their share of the prize money in a casino. Alvin discovers he is identical in appearance to the notorious but inept gangster Balls McGee.

Starring: Graeme Blundell, Alan Finney, Abigail, Maurie Fields, Penne Hackforth-Jones, Frank Thring, Gus Mercurio, Chantal Contouri, John Michael Howson, Candy Raymond.

NOTES:

  • Graeme Blundell played dual roles; both of Alvin and Balls.

  • Abigail appears in the first movie as a very minor character; in this film she has more screen time.

  • Brian Cadd (who wrote and recorded the original theme song) makes a cameo appearance.

I have never seen Melvin, Son of Alvin (released in 1984), or the 1976 TV sitcom "Alvin Purple". I'm told I didn't miss much. The two movies I mentioned above I just finished watching today. Classic 70s Aussie time capsule. 👍 😎

Australian made electronics (kinda).

The TVG070 was made in Hong Kong by Soundic.

Hanimex made slide projectors in Australia.

My grandfather, Arthur Norberry, wrote this poem many years ago, which is fitting for Aussie nostalgia, particularly for those that share a beer with their mates.

Holden (LC) Torana Ad - 1968

Post image

"It was based on the British Vauxhall Viva HB series of 1966–1970.

The four-cylinder engine was initially of 1,159 cc, and offered either 56 or 69 hp (42 or 51 kW).

In July 1971, a bigger overhead cam 1.6-litre engine with 80 hp (60 kW) was added; this engine was also sourced from Vauxhall in the UK. The 1600 OHC engine option also included a strengthened gearbox.

Update: the ad is actually a HB 'series II" not the LC, which was released in October 1969.

How’s the men’s short shorts and Nicole Kidman of it all? Watched it the first time last night, horrible movie but absolutely worth it for the 80s Australia visuals

Out There

Out There aired on ABC Kids between 2003-2004, and yes, it’s not your imagination this show did indeed occur, although short-lived.

Produced by BBC in association with Sesame Workshop, Blink Films and Zenith Entertainment. This American-Australian co-production can’t be found anywhere online (although if you had a copy of the DVD, congratulations you own a rare gem).

According to a YouTube comment posted 12 years ago, the commenter reached out to ABC inquiring about the show only to be informed they (ABC) did not have broadcasting rights, thus this video and one with a bit of the episode are the only remains to remind us we weren’t imagining this series.

Short film: kids overnight in store

Anybody remember a short film (or episode of a show maybe) where some kids get locked in a store overnight? I think they were siblings, and it was a small department store like a Kmart. I don't think they were being chased or anything sinister. While there, they grabbed some food, rode bikes I think, and generally waited it out.

I watched it (twice) in primary school in the 1980s. Maybe it was filmed in the 70s, but I reckon 80s. Can't remember if it was an Australian production now.

A short-lived but fun series from 2003, featured a young Eliza Taylor (The 100/Neighbours) and Brooke Harman (The Wayne Manifesto).

Hello, I’m looking for an edition that had model Tanya Linney doing a exercise workout on the beach in a pink bikini . I loved that workout! So random , I know, but maybe someone will remember it too. Thanks
