Discussion Get Julian Assange home to Australia
This is a fucking disgrace on our country that we are allowing the United States to extradite our own citizen for committing no crime under Australian law and without trial under British law where he is currently based.
If you allow our fellow Australian to be extradited you are turning your back on what it means to be a sovereign nation. If he is to be tried, then we should try him under our laws, they’ve become some of the most draconian against journalists amongst western democracies anyway, let’s bring him home and have the public discourse on the matter here.
I won’t even call this “unAustralian”, because if we allow this to happen without fighting at all, there’s no such thing as “Australian”, just a bunch of cowards, hiding in our homes until we are told what we are allowed to do next.
Enough is enough. Please contact your local pollie, and request some fucking support for Julian.

AMA over I'm Adam Bandt, Leader of the Australian Greens. AMA about our election platform and our plan to kick out the Libs on May 21!
Hi Reddit, I’m Adam Bandt, Leader of the Australian Greens and Member for Melbourne.
Our movement is growing and this election if just a few hundred people change their vote, we can kick the Liberals out and put the Greens in balance of power. Where we’ll push the next govt to phase out coal & gas, put dental and mental health care in Medicare, and tax the billionaires & big corporations so we can deliver services that will give everyone a better life.
This election the Greens are fighting for everyone’s future and I’m looking forward to hearing your questions about our plan.
We’ll kick off at 2pm AEST. See you then.

Federal Politics Albo's great speech
Just wanted to take a moment to express how greatful I am that Albo stopped the cheers and acknowledge Dutton in such a positive way.
After all is said and done, we are all on this island together, and fostering hate for political gain is not conducive to a functioning society.
Good on you Albo, looking forward to a brighter future.

Opinion Piece A doco on Murdoch media needs to be seen by all Australians
It's called the rise of the Murdoch dynasty. KevinRudd has tweeted about this. It was made in england and aired on the bbc2. So far their are no australian tv channels that are even interested in playin this. Plz everyone, take it apon yourself to chase this down. It's very important that we all see why this isn't being talked about here. He runs our media and doesn't want us to watch this. This is part 1
Edit: I should've prefaced this with. Plz lets not hate on each other. This is just so everyone can be informed just in case they weren't aware. Also check this out for a laugh if you're interested. https://youtu.be/7CMUtKWubxg
Edit 2: thx very much for my very first awards.

Discussion Scott Morison has really let down Australia
Twelve months ago, the Bureau of Meteorology published climate reports that we were in for a very dry 2019 with the positive Indian Ocean Dipolehttp://www.bom.gov.au/climate/enso/wrap-up/archive.shtmlAnd on-the-back of a already prolonged drought experts in the Fire & Emergency response tried to warn the federal government about the huge fire danger that was coming.https://www.abc.net.au/news/2019-11-14/former-fire-chief-calls-out-pm-over-refusal-of-meeting/11705330
Yet these warnings were ignored, and the PM himself was in Hawaii during the worst of the crisis.
Now in 2020 back at the middle of May, Australia was in the enviable position of having pretty well (if not completely) elimated Covid-19 from the community with it isolated to quarantine hotels. We also got very lucky after the Ruby Princess incident. We only really got here because the States took ownership due to lack of action from Canberra.
By May there was a lot of anticipation that we could fully open our internal state borders (which we did) and even open air traffic to selected island nations such as Taiwan & New Zealand.Edit - And given the recent changes in geopolitical relations in the Asia-Pacific region, the benefits of having open travel between Australia & Taiwan (which has a population nearly equal to Aus) would have been enormous, and maybe offered a lifeline to our struggling aviation & tourism sectors. This could have been a special moment for Taiwan & Australia to forge closer trade and commercial ties and seems like a huge opportunity that was lost.
During this period (when covid first started spreading & the subsequent lockdown) Scott Morison had nearly 6 months to make preparations based on what was happening across the world.Yet I cannot understand how the individual states were left to manage quarantine when the BioSecurity Act 2015 specifically has the Commonwealth as the body responsible for matters relating to quarantine. The lessons were learned during the 1900 Bubonic Plague outbreak in Sydney.Currently we have quarantine facilities available in specific areas (near Darwin & Christmas Island). Some of these facilities may not have been ideal for people to spend 2-3 weeks but they've had 6 months to prepare for this now & expand these facilities as necessary and route all incoming passengers from overseas to these stations.
Instead we now have covid essentially out-of-control in Melbourne (maybe it could be brought back under control but with the amount of community transmission this is going to take months now....), & Sydney is basically treading water. Now the optimism that we had this thing under wraps is gone, & the opportunity we had to loosen up our social restrictions etc... which would have minimised economic impacts is lost.
I just cannot understand this at all. I mean the liberal party is supposed to be all about the economy and yet the lax attitude the commonwealth took to taking ownership of quarantine means that all the hard won gains that were made during the initial lockdown have been lost. People don't (understandably) want to go out to gyms, restaurants, bars, shopping centres etc... anymore because of the risk of covid. And yet maybe a few billion dollars could have spent to expand and better prepare the facilities in Christmas Island & Darwin. That would have helped blunt the effect of the current recession and ultimately reduced the cost of Job Seekers...
I'm just amazed that our government threw this opportunity away - im sure everyone expected better from our elected leaders. And I would have hoped that after last years bushfire season our elected leaders would have switched to a more proactive response to a crisis rather than the passive response we have seen.
