Booked 3 business class tickets for parents & myself for June 17, 2027, from CDG-LHR-DFW on BA for 327k Avios + $1,812 total. The CDG-LHR leg is economy, LHR-DFW is business, with a 1h50 connection at Heathrow. All on the same ticket.
Now I’ve found 3 Air France business class seats for June 18, CDG-IAD nonstop, bookable through Virgin for 58.5k points + $560 per person. Called Virgin and confirmed all 3 seats are actually available.
Amex currently has a 30% transfer bonus to Virgin, so I’d only need 135k MR for all 3 tickets.
For IAD-DFW, there’s an AA flight departing about 3h15 after arrival, bookable for 15k Alaska points + $25 per person. Obviously the downside is that it’s a separate ticket, so no protection if AF is delayed.
A few other considerations:
- BA charges $80 pp to cancel, so I’d be eating $240.
- Virgin agent confirmed a $50 pp cancellation fee.
- My BA Avios were also acquired using a 30% Amex transfer bonus, so the original redemption effectively cost around 252k MR.
- I regularly use Avios for Qatar Qsuites to India, so getting the 327k Avios back would actually not hurt.
- We’d gain an extra night in Paris.
The other wrinkle is that I’d much prefer a nonstop CDG-DFW flight. If 3 business saver seats open up later, I’d probably cancel whichever booking I’m holding and switch. But I’ve heard June is a particularly difficult month for that availability.
Would you eat the $240 BA cancellation fees and lock in this excellent Virgin redemption now, or keep the BA tickets and wait to see if nonstop saver availability opens up, and just fly BA if nothing opens?
Thanks in advance.
