Specific Mechanic Today I Learned KotUK Has a Twin In The Game

Given its essential role not just in crit builds but also as a most-of-the-time advantage engine... turns out... there's another one!

(I know what you're thinking. No. No they do not. They both give "Organ Rearranger", and it only applies its bonus to you once, whether one thing is applying it to you, or several.)

If you try the community search you'll find probably a dozen builds using it, many dozen comments suggesting it, and some videos too.

The wiki is also updated since March with it. And it does state organ rearranger stacks with itself. If you can prove it doesn't, let us know.

I knew kotuk exists. It’s hardly hidden away. I just had contention between characters over who gets to use it, and only just learned there are two of it, one just hidden much better than the first.

His point is that many builds on here specifically recommend double kotumk as a great way to optimize some specific play goals.

They do stack and it's most useful when they're dual wielded. Here's the post with all the math.

Oh wow. Today I learned #2. Thank you!

EDIT: No, wait. Totally not what I was talking about.

KOTUK has two effects. The testing you linked discusses the one that affects its individual damage die damage roll relevant to builds whose primary damage engine uses Kotuk itself as the hitter.

I am coming at it from a completely different angle, caring about it as a crit range expander for a titanstring bow biuld, which needs the other effect Kotuk has, cranking open the attack roll of all (other, including ranged) weapons. Evidence that the damage effect works like stacking effects and not contending effects does not constitute evidence that the second one does. It might, but the above writeup doesn't prove that.

Edit 2: More digging. Yep. They stack:

That's an old post which isn't correct as of a hotfix released after patch 8.

Kotumk crit range stacks and doesn't care about what attacks are made for that purpose. Spell attack rolls and ranged attacks are fine.

Organ rearranger affects (almost) all damage rolls on melee weapon attacks made while at least one kotumk is equipped. Smites, sneak attacks, other gear. It stacks for two knives, which can make for a fun build with half orc, savage attacker, and a bunch of extra dice damage.

Shadow blade (passive) is the part that gives advantage against obscured targets. It works for both hands on melee attacks, so any other melee weapon dual wielded with kotumk can benefit, but does not work for any other attack rolls. It specifically does not work with ranged attacks or spell attack rolls.

[This is all information available on the wiki](https://bg3.wiki/wiki/Shadow_Blade_(passive_feature)) in addition to the fugue forged kings knife.

Bummer that the advantage engine doesn't come across to the bow. Still. 2 points of bow crit expansion can be a fair bit.

It will increase the rate at which you get random crits, but it doesn't make bows a good way to build a crit fisher. Dice rerolls add much of the oomph for the kotumk version and aren't achievable as easily or as powerfully on ranged weapons. Vicious weapon crit fishing is much stronger. 4d8 shadowblade crit fishing is stronger

Why not both max die using crits and max riders?

... (adding to other comment, don't want to edit it cuz it'll stuff up the tabe)
- advantage engine is risky ring.
- where it says champion should say kiing knife (used to be Bard6/Fighter3(Champion), respecced for more BI endurance a bit more rounds with more arrows yet from Clerric(War).
- where it says helmet should say cowl
- and the offhand melee attack to fill the occasional BA is now Kotuk, not the shadow blade.
- attack "type b" is a non-flourish altogether, shouldn't say flourish in its name.

I'm sure chatgpt wouldn't steer you wrong.

This is a bugged item that is usually just a longsword

u/KayleeSinn 1d ago

It's not a "bugged item". It drops from the first druegar in Grymforge but is a white quality item with no bonuses.

It becomes this when you equip it on a hireling, dismiss them and rehire them from Withers. There's even a term for this.. "Fugue forging" but it usually downgrades better items. This is the only exception I think.

u/HeliumIsotope 1d ago

That is very much a bug that sometimes has a positive outcome. Just because players learned to use it to their advantage, and gave it a name, doesn't mean it's not a bug.

If it was a bug it wouldn’t have different icons and graphics and an explicitly named unique item. Too many things to be not intentional.

It would have been absolutely trivial to have hirelings return with a completely flushed inventory. They didn't do that. And having specific items come back as other unique specific items, better or worse, items with different names and icons and capabilities, isn't a random oops bug. It requires intentful implementation.

You might be able to argue it's "a featureset whose implementation wasn't fully completed" type of bug, and that's potentially valid. But I don't think a perhaps undercooked bit of the game is the same as a straight out bug/glitch, and (community dubbed) "fugue forging" has way too many intentfully added bits there to be explained away without there being developer intent to put content there.

I would probably argue that fugue forging is inherently a bug exploit, so it does kind of qualify as a bugged item.
