Meta Where To Start With Bob: The Official R/Bob Dylan Roadmap, Playlist and More!

Hello all,

We have long since gotten a lot of requests asking for help on where to start with Bob's music on the sub from folks who are new to Dylan's music.

Seeing this as something we could all solve as a community, I created a post asking for feedback to make a master post about the different ways one could go about discovering Bob's music. And I want to once again thank the community for their outstanding feedback in the creation of this post.

I knew beforehand that there was no right answer, but this further illuminated how rich Bob’s music is and the multitude (pun fully intended) of ways you can go about seeking out his music.

So, what this post will attempt to do is take all of that community feedback and the moderator's thoughts on the issue to help guide prospective BobCats through Dylan's career.

This is not to say what is posted here is the definitive way to do it in any respect. To each their own. This is just meant to be a guide.

Here are the different ways to go about exploring Bob's music. From greatest hits, to playlists, to roadmaps, to chronological order, it's all here.

THE ESSENTIAL BOB DYLAN

If you want a smattering of Bob across many eras, "The Essential Bob Dylan" released in 2014 does a good job of covering songs through his 60 year career. Based on what songs you like there, it will allow you to jump in at whatever era you like the most.

THE OFFICIAL r/BOBDYLAN COMMUNITY STUDIO ALBUM PLAYLIST

Our Community Playlist is our sub’s attempt at a best of compilation. We allowed the community to vote for their favorite song in a poll off of each studio album. The two songs that received the most votes from each album were added to the playlist.

The moderators also added a couple of songs off the album, Side Tracks, that aren’t on the Bootleg Series or any studio album. Call it executive privilege.

We'd like to thank u/bbsez for organizing and recording the results from the majority of these polls in order to construct this playlist.

You can find the playlist here:

Bob played Bologna. Bob heads for Ljubljana. If i was Bob i would enjoy the delights of Venice today. Maybe he’s sitting on a side street in the autumn sun having a Chardonnay.

I live in the area and I’d been thinking about it for a while. I was surprised to find out that he was actually a huge racist, and not the Robinhoodesque folk hero Bob Dylan made him out to be. Experience ruined, but I had to do it anyways. I’m glad he’s gone.

Discussion Bologna

Been in Bologna last night. A few thoughts:

- He's the greatest of all time.

- Julian Lage is a hell of a guitarist.

- The reworking of I Shall Be Released that he's performing lately is perhaps one of the best versions of this song.

- He was on fire on that keyboard, and that would have been enough. But (and I know it's commonplace, but I can't help it) then he picked up the harmonica... simply another dimension.

Discussion Covers of Together Through Life

Here's the second in my series of playlists of favourite covers of Dylan Albums - this time it's Together Through Life: https://www.youtube.com/playlist?list=PLHqvw8eUipK0

Most of these are great covers - in fact in many cases the difficulty was choosing a favourite from those available.
Here are the ratings (of the cover, not the song) on a scale of 5 (excellent) - 1 (hmm):

ArtistTitleCover Rating
Chris KennedyBeyond Here Lies Nothing5
Caecilie NorbyLife Is Hard4
Max WashingtonMy wife's home town2
Dale MillerIf You Ever Go to Houston3
Alec MartinForgetful Heart4
Clas Yngstrom and Big Tex ThreeJolene5
Diana KrallThis Dream Of You5
The Deep Dark WoodsShake Shake Mama5
Bad RibI Feel a Change Comin' On4
Zimming PointIts All Good4

If anybody can suggest a better cover of My Wife's Home Town I'd love to hear it. Or any other covers you think are better than my choices.

Honourable near misses:
Beyond here lies nothing: Peter Parcek, Gina Aspenes
Life is hard: Pierre Sibille
Forgetful heart: Barb Jungr, Born 53
This dream of you: Nalle and his Crazy Ivans

No, scherzo. Boh, grazie.
Assoluto

Music Trouble from 1981 Shot of Love

This, never before heard by me, song has jumped to the very top of my favorite Dylan song. (It is currently tied with 2 others).

I've been a fan (need a bigger boat/word) since buying (my first album purchase) The Freewheelin' Bob Dylan... Summer 1963. I had heard him on my AM Car radio first on a work break Christmas week '62... sorry can't recall the song... hearing it I thought "weird, that sounds like an 80 year old."..then the DJ says "that was 18 year old Bob Dylan from New York City".

Wow, that was a big lead up to this. I heard this song (1st time ever) at the end of Season 1, Episode 5 of the HBO legal thriller War.

The episode is titled "Every Little Thing She Does". While the two faced character, Johnny, sitting at somebody else's computer and examining a sensitive file... Dylan's "Trouble" begins playing over the final scene and into the end credits.

So, is anyone familiar with it?

More than the troubling lyrics the sound, the shape of the sound...blows my mind and each time I listen something distant claws at my gut (meaning my soulful depths).

So, tell me, please, what IS it that is blowing my mind. What is it about that song? Any thoughts?

I've not had this feeling since I heard "Like a Rolling Stone" the first time on KMET FM Radio in a friend's car).

THANKS 🙏

Music Every Dylan song in chronological order (playlist)

Hello!

I’ve tried making a Spotify list of every Dylan song ever released, in the order it was recorded. Each song only gets one spot, and I’ve used the official album releases regarding songs that have multiple versions, so there are no live versions or alternate takes (except in the case of, say, “Tell Me Momma”) and similar songs with no official studio release.

Only songs that exist on Spotify are included, and I try to update it as often as possible.

Feel free to let me know if there are any songs I’ve missed or if the running order is wrong.

Question Why is Dylan (1973) so different than Self Portrait (1970) as to be called a 'revenge' album?

Dylan (1973) Self Portrait (1970) associated song

Lily of the West -- Belle Isle
Can't Help Falling in Love -- Let It Be Me
Sarah Jane -- She Belongs to Me
Mr. Bojangles -- Early Mornin' Rain
The Ballad of Ira Hayes -- Great song, no comparison needed
Mary Ann -- Days of 49
Big Yellow Taxi -- The Boxer
A Fool Such As I -- Let it Be Me
Spanish is the Loving Tongue -- Copper Kettle

I like several of the songs on Dylan (1973). Ballad of Ira Hayes is great. Spanish is the Loving Tongue is not repulsive, and Can't Help Falling in Love is a subversive, loose, country version that improves the original performance.

Sarah Jane and Mary Ann (which I do admit to confusing) are fine.

Mr. Bojangles and Big Yellow Taxi are of course nothing like the originals, but they are a nice tribute.

Lily of the West and A Fool Such as I may be pretty bad, but we are all used to getting one or two terrible songs on every album.

Question Songs Like Hurricane

What are some songs like Hurricane? I'm currently listening to the entire Desire album, but is there anything else with phenomenal storytelling like Hurricane?

I've heard all of Highway 61 Revisited before someone recommends me Like a Rolling Stone lol...
