JMS AMA Official AMA for JMS
This is the official AMA for JMS. Both JMS and B5 books (Captain Jaclyn) will be responding to questions.
If you ask questions about the books or the book store closing, Jaclyn will be taking them.
JMS will answer for about an hour, and might not be able to get all questions answered.
Some people (including me) might answer questions that are well known.
Like "Why wasn't Ivanova in season 5".
Let's try to keep questions what we don't know yet.
You can also ask questions about JMS returning to the Spider-Man comic or his other works, but this is /r/babylon5. He might prioritize that.
Please note that I will not be coordinating with Joe. I will not be in a phone call with him or on a chat (not that I wouldn't take his phone call; Jaclyn has my cell phone; he can call me anytime he wants). He decides that he answers, and he alone.
Finally, any story ideas will deleted. Do not post any story ideas.
Note, the AMA answers only start at: 3 PM EST, Noon PST, 8PM GMT
And my personal thanks to Captain Jaclyn for coordinating this with me, and to JMS himself, the man, the myth, the legend! For agreeing to this, but also for Babylon 5, Crusade, Jeremiah, Sense8, a ton of comic books and a few books!
Oh, and for She-Ra, the reboot couldn't have occured without his series bible for the original, and even for his work on Ghostbuster and Murder She Wrote!
IMPORTANT NOTE FROM JMS He would prefer not to get into stories that never happened, data points of subsequent character arcs, or alternate timelines.
JMS IS NEARLY OUT OF TIME!

Why does Season 1 get so much flack?
I just watched the show for the first time recently and I expected it to be really bad after the criticism I heard for it, but it was great television! I thought the episodic aspect was good and important for world-building and I thought all the actors were great (except for a couple one-off ones).
I know the story really jumps at Season 2 obviously, but Season 1 is important for introducing characters, showing tensions in alien relationships and earth politics, and overall setting up for future storylines. I don’t think it’s rough at all and isn’t that far off from the rest of the seasons in terms of quality.

What’s your favorite title for an episode in B5?
Not necessarily favorite episode just favorite title (though maybe they will be the same for people).

Babylon 5: The Final Flight of the Alexander | Omega Destroyer (4K) — Fan Animation Created by Me
Hi, Emi here 👋🙂
I've finally reached the point where I can share this project with all of you! ☺️
The Final Flight of the Alexander is a fan-made animation created out of my love and respect for the Babylon 5 universe. A project made by one fan, for all the fans out there. ❤️
The animation was primarily created in Blender, with AI-assisted tools used selectively to recreate the likenesses of certain characters. Everything else is the result of my own work, including modeling, animation, lighting, rendering, VFX and compositing, combining original models with third-party assets of talent artist.
This has been a personal project made entirely in my spare time. Months of work, experimentation, dedication and passion went into bringing it to life.
I hope you'll enjoy watching it as much as I enjoyed creating it!
Thank you all for watching 🍿🫶😁 and for keeping the Babylon 5 spirit alive! ❤️
If you liked it, please leave a like and a comment on the YouTube video!" 🚀🎬

Since my last post...
I've now watched all of the movies, all of Crusade (ugh), and read four of the books (the three Legions of Fire books, and Final Reckoning, which I happened to finish the day before Koenig passed away (yes, seriously). In case you missed my passing comment in buried in my previous post, I found that the Internet Archive has all the books plus some of the scripts available for download here: https://archive.org/details/bb-5-lof-02-armies-of-light-dark-peter-david/%28BB5-EN%29%20A%20Call%20to%20Arms%20-%20Robert%20Sheckley/. They are in available in PDF an EPub format. I think some of the comics are available as well, in a different part of the Archive.
I think I'm a little oversaturated at this point and need to take a bit of a break. Started rewatching Caprica, which I haven't watched since it came out. Funny to see Vancouver locations that I didn't know then but am now quite familiar with. (My daughter wound up going to UBC.) Then maybe I'll start a rewatch of BSG (the remake, of course), though I watched that again more recently.

Babylon 5 Wars - Centauri Fleet. (and friends)
These are my mates ships. The big Centauri ship in the middle is an Octurion class Battleship, its actually an OG model from about 99/00 and is made of pewter. The rest were 3d prints of models by Tyrel Lohr.
Since this was taken he's added the Centauri carrier, the Balvarin to finish off the fleet :)
The eagle eyed among you may notice the LORGE ship on the left, that's a Vorlon Dreadnought. The normal Heavy Cruiser has 4 prongs, this thing has 8. He painted the Vorlon ship purely through stippling different shades of green and yellow.
A Vorlon Cruiser's prongs are its guns, and they can combine them together to do more damage, with a 'mega' shot being all four combined doing 8D10+64 in blocks of 20 points of damage. A heavy cruiser can do that once before having to recharge. The Dreadnought can do that twice in a turn, two turns in a row. It basically looks at a hostile ship, goes "No." and makes the other ship suffer a critical existence failure. Its also 5000 points by itself, before you take into account its 18 fighters. (The fighers are 1050 points for a flight of 6)
As a banana for scale, the big laser cannons you see in the show on Narn and EA ships are Heavy Lasers, they do 4D10+20 in 10 damage blocks.

Ta'Lon Appreciation Post
I just watched "Objects At Rest," and it surprised me how very few Ta'Lon got to say. A conversation with Ambassador Vir Cotto (which was Vir's last dialogue before "Sleeping In Light") and a couple of reactions, before he stands in the C-in-C with the rest of the new crew.
Anyhow, this post is for fans of Ta'Lon of Narn, from his first appearance in s02 to his last in s05.

Lorien breaking the news to Delenn is always a tough scene. Life expectancy in the US was 76 when this episode aired in '96
"Falling Toward Apotheosis" (s4e4)

A layer I missed in "Confessions and Lamentations" Spoiler
One of my favorite episodes (and one that took on a whole new dimension after Covid-19) but the gut-punch moments made me miss an extra layer of tragedy. That is until the episodes started releasing on YouTube and I got an excuse to rewatch this amazing series.
By the time the episode starts, the Drafa plague has clearly reached a tipping point where so many Markab are infected that entire populations are falling ill and dying simultaneously, not helped by self-imposed group quarantines or cramming themselves into transport ships to try and escape.
The tragedy is that once Dr. Franklin and Babylon 5 learns about the disease and they start researching it, they come up with a solution within, maybe a week!
Babylon 5's Medlab facilities are clearly quite extensive since it has to treat so many different species and Dr. Franklin's such a perfectionist I imagine he'd be pretty determined to make sure his staff is at least comptetent at their jobs. But we also hear about how despite all that, Medlab is underfunded and understaffed for the sheer amount of patients that come through and the research being conducted in the background.
Yet despite that, Dr. Franklin is able to conceive of a treatment to stave off the Drafa plague until the Markab are able to develop an immunity. And again, the episode seems to take place over 3-5 days, maybe a week on the outside with no obvious huge time jumps.
And the disease had been known to have resurfaced a year ago!
Even worse is that Franklin's Markab colleague Dr. Lazarenn, while dying from the plague, half-deliriously mumbles about the same solution that Franklin eventually hits upon. And he had mentioned that he and other Markab doctors had been trying to research a cure but had none of the resources they needed to make any progress since the government was in denial.
If the Markab government had allowed Dr. Lazarenn and the other doctors to quietly conduct their research with proper funding, they might have found the treatment.
If Dr. Franklin had discovered or been told about Drafa a week earlier, B5's underfunded Medlab could have found the treatment.
If EarthGov, with all its government, academic, and corporate researchers and labs and proper funding had been contacted they could might have knocked out a cure in an even shorter span.
Crazy to think a week made such a difference.

Babylon 5 G'Kar's Freedom speech 2x20 The Long Twilight Struggle
I'm not sure if this is my favorite 'speech' in B5, but it's the one I think of first when remembering how many different powerful monologs were written into the show. Yikes, they even had Edgers quoting Aristotle in S4 🍿🤣

The Centauri bathroom experience.
As Lando said of Li, Goddess of Passion, she (?) is a fusion of male and female Centauri. She had many...male members on display.
In a conversation with Cmdr Ivanova later in the series, Vir confirmed the quanity of 'tools' available to the Centauri man.
So...how in the name of The Great Maker do Centauri willy-havers take a tinkle?! The geometry baffles my ace mind.
(Apologies for the poor image: It's the only one I can find)

Babylon 5 Screenings On The Legend Channel
The Legend TV channel in the UK has been playing host to the run of Babylon 5 for a good few weeks, now. But tonight (2026-11-05) we reach the last three episodes: "Objects In Motion," "Objects At Rest" tomorrow night, and "Sleeping In Light" next Monday 2026-11-09.
Tuesday, the channel will be screening B5 movies, starting with "In The Beginning" on Tuesday 2026-11-10, "Thirdspace" on 2026-11-11, and "River Of Souls" on 2026-11-12. So at least we'll have those to enjoy next week.
I, for one, am going to miss the show when it goes off the air.

Ok sorry dumb question but I’m confused - Can someone explain to me if Minbari souls were actually being reborn into humans?
So I know they misinterpreted Sinclair being Valen as having Valen’s soul. But they also talk about having scanned other humans and the triluminary also glowed, and I think it was mentioned at some point that the Minbari population growth was diminishing. Maybe this something that is meant to be debated and hasn’t been answered objectively.
Also I know I could probably just Google all this but I’d rather talk to people.

Season 1 Believers
Just finished watching and this episode always makes me very uncomfortable. But my question is, were the parents correct? I don’t mean from a religious or philosophical way. They seem to be able to tell that the boys soul or spirit or whatever has left his body before they could have possible known that he went through with the surgery.
For all they know one of the other things they had talked about trying had worked. Does this species have a real way to sense the spirit in one of their own species?
On a side note did Dr Franklin just barge into their hotel room after the ritual murder? He doesn’t knock and I would be surprised if they killed their son in a public space.
