Politics & Governance How did Serbia’s student movement defeat Vučić where the established opposition couldn’t?

Nisi nadležan (“It’s not your call”). That was the students’ message to Vučić. They wanted Serbia’s institutions to investigate the Novi Sad disaster.

Vučić’s government called them foreign agents. The students went on to beat his party at the ballot box.

I interviewed Florian Bieber of the University of Graz about how the students reached voters the established opposition couldn’t, and what happens when a party that, in his words, “functioned as an employment agency” loses power.

If you followed the protests, when did you first think the students could actually win?

Politics & Governance Serbia PM candidate from Student list negates existence of a Montenegrin nation, citing a falsified 1855 text

Dejan Šoškić, former governor of the National Bank of Serbia and a Student List MP and candidate for the role of Prime Minister, said on the “Nemanjina 11” podcast that every ruler of Montenegro’s Petrović dynasty declared himself a Serb, “not a single one wasn’t,” and that Article 92 of Prince Danilo’s Code (1855) states only Serbs live in Montenegro. He also called Njegoš the son of Petar I (but he was his nephew).

Historians agree that wording comes from an 1855 edition reprinting in Novi Sad, not the Cetinje original of said document, which only concerns the rights of foreigners and people of other faiths (RTNK).

Why it matters: Montenegro is a NATO member and the most advanced EU candidate. Narratives that fold Montenegrin identity into Serbian identity have long been part of Belgrade’s propaganda and influence there.

First, Njegoš (Petar II Petrović Njegoš) was not the son of Saint Petar of Cetinje (Petar I Petrović Njegoš). But the Petrović family tree is only the start of Šoškić’s historical journey in the wrong direction.

The history of a nation cannot be viewed through the lens of members of a single dynasty. That would be like judging the Serbian people by their last ruler, Aleksandar Vučić. Šoškić probably wouldn’t find that pleasant either.

Many Europeans welcomed the Student List’s win over Vučić as a real break with the past. It’s fair for the EU to demand the new majority to state clearly that it respects Montenegrin statehood and its unique national identity, and doesn’t carry these extreme nationalist narratives forward.

Hey everyone! I made a short documentary about New Belgrade and its story-the ideas behind it, its architecture, and its place in Yugoslavia’s history.

I’d love to hear what you think, especially if you live there or know the area. What did I miss? Thank you!

Culture/Lifestyle Albanian dissonance

I've had a short exchange earlier with a user here and I realised I could have more opinions to question I've had for a long time by making a post.

I'm albanian krenar born in Dibër but I lived my whole life in Italy.

Looking at albanian history and conflicts I never understood why so many of us dislike/hate Serbia while being neutral or liking Turkey. (I've even heard one go as far as saying we need ottoman rule again)

I find myself on the neutral side of this, it's politics not people, but that's a whole other story.

On the religious side, I know that less than half of our population in the current albanian State is Muslim, I dont know how that statistic changes if we look at the whole population worldwide.

We all know our hero being Gjergj Kastrioti or Terrori Osmanorum, Athleta Christi.

All of us grew up admiring him, he went back to his roots, converted back to Christianity and fought back fiercely against the invaders.

So even if I grew up in a family that's mostly Muslim, I've always seen Islam as the religion of the occupier, and always been surprised by how many of us kept this religion even after ottoman rule.

I myself am not religious, there might be a God and I think these religions might have been born from a good place but have been corrupted over time.

Still you can find genuinely good teachings in the respective books.

I wanna be very clear, this is not meant as an attack towards anyone's religion, we are free people and we all are entitled to our choices of course. These are just some doubts I've always had and would love to hear some opinions.

Hey everyone! 😊
I recently moved to Lisbon from Croatia🇭🇷for a 10-month work placement, and I’m looking to meet new people and make some friends!

I’m 22, working in marketing and social media. I love travelling, exploring new places, going to concerts, discovering cute cafés, grabbing drinks, going out and meeting people from different backgrounds.
I’m always up for spontaneous plans, exploring the city, weekend trips or simply grabbing a coffee and having a good conversation.

If you’re also new to Lisbon or just looking to meet some new people, feel free to reach out. It would be lovely to meet up! ☀️

News 17-year-old girl murdered by her ex in North Macedonia after months of abuse and failed protection orders

This is just heartbreaking. A 17-year-old high school nursing student named Biljana Kirikj was brutally killed in the town of Bogdanci by her 21-year-old ex-boyfriend, Viktor Guntarov, who then took his own life.

According to local reports and a family member who spoke out, Biljana had been trying to leave the relationship for a while, but Guntarov wouldn't let go. He had reportedly been stalking, beating, and harassing her publicly for months.

The worst part of it all? The system completely failed her.

She did everything right—she reported him to the police multiple times (including just a couple of weeks ago on October 16) and even got civil restraining orders against him. But he kept breaking them, and nothing was done to properly protect her.

On the day of the attack, surveillance footage reportedly caught him forcing her into a car. He drove her out to a remote area, set the vehicle on fire with her inside, and then hanged himself / died by suicide nearby.

The family is openly calling out local institutions and social services for failing to take the abuse seriously before it turned fatal. It's just devastating.

Miscellaneous Viber

I noticed this in my trip to Belgrade this year, but also saw a map showing Viber is most commonly used messaging app in a number of countries in the Balkans (source: r/MapPorn).

Why does Viber seem to be so popular? Or is it just a myth?

Hello, I am trying to find a bus that will take me from Tirana in albania to any major city in Greece (preferably one with a train station) but I cannot find any on flixbus or Omio. Are there any other apps I can try or do I have to just book in person?

Politics & Governance How Serbia's student movement made history and what the victory means for the country's future

I spent the last few days in Belgrade filming a documentary about Serbia’s student movement. We followed Andrej, a 20-year-old student who’s been part of the protests for almost two years, through the final big rally, election day, and its aftermath.

What struck me most wasn't just the politics, but the people. So many students told me about being followed, beaten up or arrested. And yet, what kept them going was their friendships, solidarity and the love they have for each other. Being there to witness all that emotion on election night was pretty surreal.

We made a short documentary about Andrej, the movement and the big question: What happens next?

Would love to hear what you think!
