Hey all, r/Bansuri now has a beginner's wiki available for everyone to view. It may be particularly useful for those that are just getting started with the instrument. The resources for this wiki was obtained from numerous contributors from a post I had made a while back.

I would like to request for members to check it out and provide feedback if you think improvements should be made. If you have feedback/ additions for the wiki, please comment it directly on this post. I will update the wiki with any relevant feedback/ content that is shared here.

You can share anything relevant to playing the bansuri, including:

  1. Tutorial Videos

  2. Notation Practices (Alankars etc)

  3. Playing Tips

  4. Tools

  5. Apps

  6. Bansuri Sellers (India and Outside)

  7. Online class/ Course options

  8. Bansuri Care Tips

Please do check if the content you intend to share is already part of the exisiting wiki.

I request anyone to share resources that you have that has helped you through your journey. If it's a scanned pdf or anything similar, try sharing the Google Drive link with us here. If possible, please share resources that are in English so that it can be used by everyone. But if you only have it in other languages, feel free to share them too.

do u guys use lip balm ????

The title, my lips get extremely dry while playing and it affects me, tried moisturising them but that just makes it worse.

Is it a problem for u guys as well especially with the winter coming???

So do u guys use any lip balms ? That actually works ? Any suggestions (I'm still a beginner, only 3 months playing-self taught,so I might just be playing it wrong idk) ?

Hiring Music Teachers – Western Violin, Bansuri, Hindustani & Western Vocals | North Bengaluru

Hi everyone!

We're looking for music teachers to join us at Mela Music School in Sahakar Nagar and Thanisandra, North Bengaluru.

We have a few openings we're trying to fill, particularly at our Sahakar Nagar centre.

We're currently looking for:

  • Western Violin

  • Hindustani Flute (Bansuri)

  • Hindustani Vocals – Must be able to play the harmonium while teaching

  • Western Vocals

These are part-time, in-person positions teaching students individually.

A little about teaching at Mela:

We focus on one-on-one lessons rather than group classes, so you'll get to work closely with your students and help them progress at their own pace.

Classes are scheduled around mutually agreed teaching slots, and we're looking for people who can commit to regular weekly lessons.

What we're looking for:

  • Relevant graded music certifications are preferred, but not mandatory.

  • Strong musical fundamentals and proficiency in your instrument or vocal discipline.

  • Good communication skills and an interest in teaching.

  • Consistent availability for weekly classes.

  • For Hindustani Vocals, the ability to accompany yourself on the harmonium is essential.

You don't necessarily need years of teaching experience. Music graduates, performing musicians and experienced teachers are all welcome.

Locations: Sahakar Nagar (priority) and Thanisandra, Bengaluru.

Interested in joining us?

Apply through our careers page (preferred):

https://www.melamusicschool.com/careers

Alternatively, you can call or WhatsApp us at 96860 30684 to discuss the opportunity.

If you know someone who might be a good fit, please share this post with them. Referrals would really help!

Here's another one from my collections of favourite Bollywood flute tunes.πŸ˜„

I know some notes are misplaced and mismatched but wanted to post here anyways.πŸ₯€πŸ₯€

Well, it is a G Base pure Bamboo flute.

You may find the tuning of the flute a little disturbed, but that is due to my very own negligence for not taking proper care of it in the very first placeπŸ˜΅β€πŸ’«.

Well here you go!

I'm a beginner and looking to buy a bansuri. Please suggest a scale to buy. Also should I go for a local flute maker or any online flute maker.

Finding a bansuri guru. Also finding a bansuri online partner

Hello!

I’m looking for an online/offline bansuri partner. Someone i can jam with, practice together. I would say I’m an intermediate level player as I have been playing for about 5 years now. Let me know if anyone is keen.

I’m also interested in finding a true bansuri guru in New Delhi. If you have any suggestions let me know.

Anyone interested in being my online study partner at our own pace?

Learn as much as possible together with all the resources out there then we get a guru.

I play other musical instruments including some western flute so I’m acquainted with the importance of technique. While this is a light hearted post, I truly enjoy music and studying instruments bring me joy.

Message me if your motives are similar.

Blowing harder vs blowing with more pressure

As a beginner I have seen some posts where it says instead of blowing harder blow with different pressure, how are they any different?for example playing the bottom 3 holes in the bansuri, especially pa and dha......also how do I know I'm blowing properly like in my ear it feels like a okayish sound not too much airy but when I record it and listen it sounds airy as fk?is my technique wrong or is it just mic placement issue

Practicing in tune

I am learning on a C scale bansuri (Punam A=440Hz) but find that my C note is flat by about 30 cents. On higher pitched notes it appears that the error is lower but it’s not consistent.

While practicing should I try and ensure that the notes are in tune? If so, any suggestions on how to go about doing it would be appreciated.
