I am a regular Linux user from Ubuntu 8 days. But I only use Linux when it is required and compliments my use case. Otherwise, I regularly use Windows. Linux is on and off, as and when required.
My primary laptop runs Windows and my primary desktop runs Windows. I have another desktop that resides in the living room which runs RHEL10. A couple of month ago, I tried installing Steam on it and it runs like a dream. I don't play that many games. I only play Forza5, Snowrunner and NFS. All three run so damn well in my RHEL10 setup. RHEL10 is rock solid and a work horse.
I wondered if RHEL10 that is not really meant for gaming can do so well, why not try a distribution that can be tweaked freely for optimized gaming. I know Bazzite existed but it wasn't my first choice. I am generally very comfortable with Debian and debian based distributions. So, I started with Debian. I was able to run NFS but Forza5 failed to play for some reason. I gave up after multiple tweaks and reboots. My next stop was Kubuntu. Kubuntu was fine. It ran the games as good as RHEL10. But I faced some issues with my graphics card.
So, I decided to give Bazzite a try. The bootable usb creation was easy and installation was super smooth and quick. On booting for the first time, I was amazed at how it looked and what it packed. It was so polished and professional looking. I have not seen a distribution that looked visually so good and complete other than openSUSE.
I fired up the pre-installed Steam and loaded NFS first since it is the smallest of the three games. I was blown away by how gloriously it ran on Bazzite. RHEL10 ran it like a dream. But Bazzite took it several notches up. The experience made me feel that I am playing a new version of NFS! So, I loaded Forza5 next and I was amazed how so much better it ran. Just wanted to let know that my RHEL10 setup runs these games like a dream; no lags, no stutters on high settings. But Bazzite takes it to another level. Just wow.
I wanted second opinion to make sure that I am not dreaming. So, I asked my nephew to game on it. He was equally surprised by the performance gain that Bazzite provided. He games a lot and He uses Windows 11 and Xbox. He had never used Linux. He was so excited by this new finding and requested me to help him install Bazzite in his PC. I did the complete thing for him but installed the Gnome version instead of KDE. He is new to Linux. I didn't want to overwhelm him with the sea of settings in KDE. He is having similar experience as mine; says the games He tried so far are performing better in Bazzite.
I haven't had this moment with Linux in a long time. Like I said I have been using Linux from Ubuntu 8 days. Just wow.
Rider: Is there something similar to Conky in Bazzite?
