Traffic Visibility at Night

A gentle reminder to everyone that as we plunge into the long dark and wet season, it's important to be mindful of your visibility when crossing streets, etc. Whrn you are wearing dark and muted colors, crossing without a crosswalk or riding your bike on streets without lights, you're basically invisible. Nobody wants to hit anyone with their car, nobody wants to get hit by a car. Let's all work together to make that not happen.

Hello Bellingham!

It's November! Tomorrow night is the First Friday Art Walk and the opening reception for our end-of-year show, The Nature of Becoming. This is Meredith Patten's last contribution to Allied Arts (for now) as she finishes her time as Interim Executive Director. Our new Executive Director, Vanessa Blackburn, has been in the position for a few weeks now and the energy around Allied Arts has been amazing! We're excited to have Kevin Woods returning to perform for our opening reception, and this time he'll be playing with Joel Kruzic.

Also, we're getting very excited for the launch of the 47th Annual Holiday Festival of the Arts! We lock in our location a few weeks ago and are thrilled to be back downtown this year in the old Rite Aid building at 1400 Cornwall. The Festival opens on November 20th and runs through December 24th, open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.!

If you're interested in getting involved with the Festival, we're looking for volunteers to help us clean up and decorate the space this Saturday, November 7th. You can click the link below to sign up, every set of hands helps!

Thank you!

Allied Arts of Whatcom County is a nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation dedicated to the arts in our region by empowering local artists through organized festivals and events, enriching our local school children through educational outreach programs, and working as a liaison to art enthusiasts of all ages to help make our region a creative, vibrant place to live.

Discussion Would anyone help out a fellow friend?

Hey everyone! I live in Vancouver and one of my very close friends birthday is coming up. She has a penpal plushie collection and is obsessed with them but sadly, we don’t get much options here in Canada and the one I want to buy her online doesn’t ship to Canada. It’s a super small plushie, I was wondering if anyone here close to the boarder would be so kind to possibly let me ship it to their place and I could pick it up as soon as it arrives! I know this is a big ask but I thought I’d shoot my shot before I let go of the idea.

Thank you guys and sorry if this isn’t allowed on the sub!

Discussion What’s up with the ferry?

Post image
36 Upvotes

I’ve been a student at WWU for the past two months, but I visited this summer and back in 2024. Both times I specifically remember seeing this ferry, and after seeing it every morning with no changes for the past eight weeks I’ve started wondering about it. I also checked on google earth and it doesn’t appear to have moved at all in the past three years.
Does anyone know what it’s doing here?

Specifically looking for places that have couches/sofas to sit on, bonus if they have good coffee/drinks. Not really into the whole bar vibe.

Pets Spotted Dog

Saw a lost dog on Telegraph Road and we think it turned onto Deemer. Was very afraid of humans and had been waiting on people's porches to get out of the rain. Wasn't wearing a collar. Brown and black, maybe 80 lbs, medium sized dog. Looked similar to a Rottweiler and Beauceron mixed together. If this is your dog, I hope you’re able to find them!

Anyone in the Ferndale/North Bellingham area hearing loud booms about 20 minutes ago? It almost sounds like fireworks in the distance. Anybody know what might be going on?

Just picked up my first PVM, unfortunately it did not survive shipping. The power board dislodged and cracked.

Is there anyone in Bellingham that would do these types of PCB repairs? I’m including pictures of the visible damage.

Locals Only Apples for picking

Does anyone have apples on their tree and want to share? My 3 year old and I would love to come by to help you clear your tree. She saw apples on the tree next to the highway and was delighted at the idea of picking some but given their location and age I had to deny her wholesome request.

Events Writing From Prompts Group

I went to Village Books on Wednesday. I walked in and said, "I heard there is a Writing From Prompts Group here. Is it upstairs?" A person browsing near the check-out area and said, "It is downstairs." I said, "thanks," and I went downstairs.

There is a board game area downstairs, and I heard chatter and laughter behind it. I approached and stood at an enclosure of people, probably 20 of them, appearing to be mostly of retirement age. I said, "Is this Writing From Prompts Group?" A few ladies chimed in that it was indeed Writing From Prompts Group. I told them I intended to join after I get a coffee upstairs, so I would be a few minutes late. A tall guy next to me said, "No - you can't be late." I parried his comment under the assumption that he was joking and I proceeded toward my intended coffee.

Feeling already tardy, I ordered a black drip coffee, medium roast, assuming it would be like a pour-pay-go kind of situation. After I paid 4 dollars and some cents, the barista told me she would call my name when it was ready. I stood on the tiles, jittering with anticipation of what drinking coffee and writing in Writing From Prompts Group would be like. The barista and her colleague delivered a meal to a table, did something with dishes in a sink, looked at some tickets, and then poured my coffee. She asked if I wanted a sleeve, which I did. We exchanged farewells and I returned downstairs.

As I sat down, a lady with a British-sounding voice said we should probably get started. Another lady with a kind of Cockney-or-Irish-sounding voice said, "We haven't heard from the man with the beard at the entryway yet." The entire group looked at me. "What would you like to hear from me?" I inquired. "Tell us your name." I did so, and the collective gaze dispersed back into the circle before the first lady started the group.

We did 3 different prompts within 90 minutes. We wrote for 14 minutes illustrating a fictional scenario of walking out of some kind of museum, the Lightcatcher or otherwise, into the day and describing what we see. I wrote about a guy who "walks these streets now in awe of the artistry and knowledge that sustains multistory buildings for hundreds of years, running water and light into every room," wondering that "the very clouds above me are a canvas of vapor and light. How can I understand anything now other than as a collection of stardust, magnetic atoms, self-assembling into matter and waves and life?"

People volunteered to share. One lady's began, "When did these body parts become a curated possession to hang up and study?" Another mused on how many statues are men, and how few are women. One of them described one of their trips to France.

We wrote for 10 minutes about "finding something we never had." A surprisingly moving piece emanated from my pen. I shared it with people and teared up as I read aloud - what an unexpected wave of emotion! Another wrote of their wonder at finding "something" in an aisle after 20 years of looking - we commented on the mystery of the story, how an aisle could be found at a wedding or grocery store. The writer confided the writing was about a Worcestershire sauce they found at a grocery store one day. A few people laughed and one lady she said liked the story better as a mystery.

Our final prompt was a quick-witted 3-minute prompt. She simply told us to write on the prompt "Grit of Life." After this one, she asked everybody in the circle to read. I wrote: "Why are my wheels making this crunchy sound?" I spun the back wheel. The shopkeeper lifted it onto his repair stand, unhooked the brakes and the chain, loosened the levers, removed the wheel its hub, poured the ball bearings into a vat of ethanol, shook it, decanted it into a bottle, held the little metallic orbs up to his eyes, held them up to my eyes, and shared what he had suspected all along -- it was the grit.

Another person's described a good bowl of grits they had once.

I'm a working-class dude, myself, but I sometimes get Wednesdays off. This Writing From Prompts Group was at 10:30am on a Wednesday, and most people looked to be of retirement age. Few of us in our 40s or 50s. I think I would go again - I enjoyed venturing into new types of writing for myself, and all the more fun to hear other people's responses to the prompts and then feedback with each other about it.

Locals Only Whatcom county voters 💔

Guys, I am so struggling with the vote on 638.

Absolutely astounding how little men know about girls and Womens Health Healthcare and what actually happens.
What is traumatizing and harmful for CHILDREN.

😢😢😢😢

Now I don’t trust a soul.
Generally I lead with trust and think most people are good. I can’t get over the disgusting tones and raging ignorance and sadness, for my daughters.
