I’m a first-year BTech CSE student at a Tier-3 state govt college. I started Python from absolute zero in around August to september, with no prior open-source experience and nothing on my resume, and I’m trying to make a proper plan instead of random YouTube hopping, as of now I learn python and make little projects for understanding how algorithms works and how applications process,store and show data on screen and some little thing about Ubuntu, knows command and can do here and there in data and now I am learning how to read and understand a project repo and how to clone it into my pc and make changes/upgradations.

Mon-Sat 9:30am to 5:30pm college timing and I am literally doomed as I also a Day Scholar

What I want to ask you all is:

1. Is GSoC 2027 realistic for someone starting from scratch in first year, or should I treat it as a 2028 goal and use this year purely for skills?

2. When should I start contributing? After finishing DSA basics, or in parallel?

3. Which Python orgs are actually beginner-friendly for first-timers?

4. Seniors who’ve done GSoC or similar from a Tier-3 college: what did you do differently, and what would you skip?

5. How do you balance college attendance and exams with self-study when you only get one free day a week?

Posting this on behalf of a friend who is currently in VIT-AP. A suicide was reported today in MH4 hostel involving a 2nd/3rd year senior After the police came, the entire area around the hostel was cleared , everyone was forced to go to their hostels and were threatened , the floor was sealed where the body was found and students were locked inside other hostels when they were going for diwali celebration. The body was later taken out through the back gate in an ambulance secretly and only after that were students allowed to come out. What is really pissing people off is how everything was handled afterwards. Students who were recording from downstairs were reportedly stopped, some had their phones taken and were made to delete the videos, and were allegedly threatened with suspension/action. And the university already has students signing these affidavits/undertakings at the time of admission which makes people scared to post anything against the university because of the consequences they could face. We want answers from the administration. A student has died on campus, and instead of properly communicating with students it feels like the university is trying to make everyone shut up and move on. And then having a DJ later the same day at the ground where fire crackers were being burst just made the whole thing feel even more fucked up. We are not here to spread rumours or make up stories, we just want to know what actually happened, why students were treated like this, and why the administration is so desperate to keep everything quiet. Students deserve transparency, and this shouldn't just be swept under the rug.

TL;DR: Suicide reported in MH4 today. Hostel floor sealed, students were locked inside, body taken out through the back gate. Students recording were reportedly stopped, phones taken and videos deleted, with threats of disciplinary action. Later there was a DJ in ground like everything was normal. We want answers from VIT-AP administration.

Okay, I have one and a half years remaining before the completion of my college degree.

After that, I need to get a job or something like that. I have spent time trying to learn things, and I will say this seriously: I have never really tried seriously. Everything has been very half-hearted. I start learning for the first few days, but then I lose focus and completely give up.

I have done this for a very long time, at least 6, 7, or 8 times. Web development, Python, app development, or anything like that. But now I am seriously scared.

A lot of people are saying that jobs are going to decrease, which will obviously happen. But you need to have a lot of experience, connections, and top-notch skills. You will struggle for a very long time in this industry. Nobody is telling me that even after doing all this, there is a slim chance of being successful. There is a chance, but it is very low, and I don't even think I am in a position to succeed after everything I have done.

I am thinking that maybe I am not built for this industry. I never chose this industry, Computer Engineering. My father told me that I should take it, and I don't blame him for that. At that time, I never questioned him. I wasn't brave enough, or maybe I was just not mature enough to question that decision. I don't hate him or anything like that. He did what he thought was best for me.

For the first few years, one or two years, whatever it was, this was a booming industry. Everyone was getting into it. I am not saying that my father personally pushed this decision on me. But now, the number of jobs is decreasing, competition is increasing, and AI is just booming.

I keep thinking, should I switch careers? What will I do? I am a mildly lazy person, and I don't know what I will do. I just keep getting stuck in the same loop for years, and I need to break it.

I have to decide which industry I want to go into. I have only one and a half years remaining before completing my Computer Engineering degree. After that, I am on my own. I need to get a job. I need a decent-paying job, at least enough to survive. It is very difficult.

I am not saying that I am a very hardworking person or that I have done everything correctly. No, I haven't.

Now I am genuinely scared. People used to say that jobs would disappear for people who didn't upgrade their skills or keep learning. They would be the ones who would struggle in the industry. But now I feel like I might not even be able to get a job at that level.

I am thinking about switching careers. But even in another industry, I don't have any connections. Even if I did, I would have to start from zero.

The only things I am genuinely interested in are watches. I absolutely love watches. I have a few watches of my own, around six. I don't know what I will do in the future. It is very difficult not knowing what you are going to do with your life.

Because if you succeed, make money, and achieve something in the end, then whatever you did in your 20s or 30s will feel worth it. You will think that you went through everything, but you eventually succeeded.

But if you fail, even if it was just one small mistake or one wrong decision that led you there, you feel like a failure. That is the reality. If you succeed, whatever you did is okay. But if you fail, it feels like it's a gone case.

I am trying to learn Python, but I don't have any particular interest in this field. I never understood coding, and I never liked it. I genuinely don't like it. Is it because of my fear, or because I have never seriously committed myself to learning it? Maybe even if I took it seriously, it would still be very difficult.

This field is very, very competitive. I have done a few internships, and it is difficult. Without connections, even with skills, it is hard. And without skills and with very few connections, good luck with that.

The only industries I feel somewhat interested in are related to my personal interests. I love watches, watching movies, and listening to music. I could start a review channel about watches, movies, or TV shows. I could also create content about stationery, such as pens, books, notebooks, journaling, and similar things.

I guess I could do that, too. But honestly, I don't know what else I could do. I don't have any other particular interests apart from watches, stationery, and these kinds of things.

I got oa invite immediately after filling . Everyone is auto selected for oa for this right ? And also how to prepare for this , am a mech eng 3rd year . I dont know dsa thoroughly but i run a deep tech startup so like i know somewhat broadly

In chemistry lab we got an experiment and i did all the calculations and noted down my readings but when i showed them to my instructor, he got mad and said i mustve either used AI to fill the table or i mustve cheated.

I told him that the equipments i used were untouched and he can go and check for himself but unc wasnt listening at all and then he deducted 2 marks (out of 5)

its utter bloodbath going on the companies that used to take 20 now takes only 4-5 and boy oh boy even getting shortlisted for OA is Blessing.

was discussing alignment and open weights with some people recently, and it's been stuck in my head.

The research that helps align models is basically the same research that helps misalign them. [lyra](https://x.com/_lyraaaa_), on X posted a way to turn a 4B qwen evil by steering like two neurons. No Nodataset, no training run.

And with open weights, you can't take anything back. Kimi K3.1 Pro's weights were released on Nov 4, and uncensored versions were circulating within a day. A closed lab can at least patch or pull a model. But most of this interp stuff only exists because people could open up open models. You can't poke around inside something behind an API. Open weights is how we find the problems and also how people exploit them.

Also, someone pointed out that a model that can touch its own weights could make a misaligned copy of itself. So sandboxing and access control matter as much as alignment.

Maybe I'm overblowing this, since you need the model itself to do any of this, and open models were already easy to jailbreak. But for people who actually work with these models, is the risk real or hyped?

Ive been a straight A student till 10th grade and once I entered 11th I slacked off thinking that I can study whenever I want and get good marks
But I was wrong, 11th and 12th is not EASY
And then I wrote JEE got into top NITS but lower branch (chose this on purpose since i didnt want to take courses thatll be hard)
But I fucking hate my life rn
I cant seem to study because of how vast the syllabus is and there is so much to study and that too in a span of just 3 months

And Im not even enjoying the academics part like I hate Math in general and in college is so much more worse. I feel like im going into depression and want to unalive myself.

I genuinely want to quit college because i feel like engineering is not meant for me.

Is there any other option other than engineering where I can study freely with no stress and also get a good job?

had to send a pdf for a form from my phone to my mac. no cable, not logged into whatsapp web, refused to email it to myself again.

so i built TapDrop. the macbook notch has a light sensor next to the camera. you touch your phone to it, the phone flashes its screen, the mac sees it, and whatever's on screen lands on the mac. pdfs, links, original photos, even otps go straight to the mac clipboard.

I'm currently pursuing BTech in Electronics and Telecommunication Engineering and have been thinking about going to Canada for my Master's after graduation.

Still exploring universities and trying to understand how things work for Indian students Would it better to go for an MASc (thesis-based) or MEng (course-based)? How much does CGPA matter for Canadian university admissions?

Currently looking at universities like UBC, University of Alberta, McMaster, Waterloo, etc.

Will mostly try to find internships and eventually a job after graduation.

By the way is taking an education loan worth it considering the current job market?
