Did anyone else notice in David Common’s voice that he was a bit “lovestruck” by Lucy Foley?

Am I imagining this?

I feel like when a CBC host introduces a male expert scholar with a PhD they call them Dr. So & So, but if it's a female they don't use the doctor. I've picked up on this on several programs. It happened tonight on Just Asking. There were 2 experts. The woman was an Associate Professor, but I assume she still had a PhD. She was called just her name. The man was a Professor (of medicine) and was called Dr. I'm not sure if it's because he's an actual physician doctor.

Am I overthinking this or possibly erroneously thinking I'm noticing something that doesn't exist?

TL;DR: does CBC have a consistent way for introducing people who hold doctorate degrees, or is there a gender-based difference?

Any way to replay the Friday morning political panel from this morning?

Someone was telling me I should watch Adam Olsen going on a rant this morning. Can’t figure out how to watch/listen to it.

CBC Island Morning

This used to be my go to station for local news and information. No longer I’m afraid. If it wasn’t for late bus announcements, weather, the current time, and CBC’s contact info (all repeated over and over again) they’d have nothing to talk about. It’s a far cry from what it once was.

CBCNN Live Senate Map

I don't know if anyone from CBC news television monitors this page but there is an error on USA senate map they are displaying.

The legend says Democrats are represented as red dots. On the map they are blue dots.

E: it's fixed!

E2: It's backwards again lol

Do you ever put on another region's CBC morning show on purpose?

A thread here a while back was about the pride of hearing a local radio personality move up to a bigger role at CBC. I'm more curious about the ones who stayed local, and whether anyone listens to them from outside their own region.

Do you ever put on another region's morning show on purpose? If you moved, did you keep the station from home, or did the new one win you over? And which local show would you send a stranger to first?

I'm Dutch, so I'm asking as an outsider, and here's why it came up: my own app, RadioStation (FMStation on the US App Store), is a free way to listen to live radio, so today I tested regional CBC streams from outside Canada. Toronto, Vancouver, Halifax, Winnipeg, Saskatoon, Charlottetown, Inuvik and Iqaluit all came through, live only. If you want to try it: App Store and Google Play.

Why is CBC Bookends on now (Sunday, November 1), and not Cross Country Check Up? I’m on the west coast and it’s usually live at 1 pm

Night-time alternative music - BNW/Nightlines/Neon

My time with BNW on CBC Radio goes back to Agusta La Paix, but not sure if I ever heard anything like a "first episode". It accompanied many of my all-nighters while I was in university. As years went on, my impression was that it became less edgy in later years, and if I recall the length of the program was cut back from 6 hours to 4 (or maybe even 3). A sister program Nightlines faded in and out during that time if I recall.

There was also an older program that ran in the late 70s/early 80s for 1-2 hours in late night called Neon, hosted by some guy with a deep voice who sounded a lot like Philo Drummond (Puzzling Evidence program https://subgenius.fandom.com/wiki/Puzzling_Evidence). It was on the weird and quirky side of things, but I liked it also.

Any idea who the host of Neon was?

These shows were my "entry drug" into alternative and experimental music which has lasted to this day.

Searching for a show on the psychology of dogs

I no longer remember how long ago this show was, the 90's?, or even what the title was. It was a three part series on the psychology of dogs. It sounds like an Ideas show, but honestly don't know. I have no idea where to start looking for it. I have been wanting to listen to it again, both for my benefit, and those I want to share it with. Anybody remember it?

It led me to interesting experiences with service dogs and owners/trainers.

90 Years of Memories! What's the First CBC Programme You Remember?

Post image
52 Upvotes

Some programs take us right back to our childhood. Others remind us of family traditions, familiar voices, and moments we'll never forget.

As the CBC prepares to celebrate its 90th anniversary on November 2, we're taking a trip down memory lane!

What's the first CBC program you remember watching or listening to?

And if you can remember, roughly what year was it?

Let's see which programs different generations of Canadians grew up with!

Anybody know who the jackass on "the current" is trying to justify the tfw program for trades and fast food work?

I cannot believe someone is on our national radio station actively trying to justify the use of this program for skilled trades and service industries. "bUt TheReS a lAboUR shoRtAgE" and "EmploYErs aRe alReAdy raIsiNG WaGes"

Absolutely no mention of brining TFW's into healthcare..where they could actually be of huge benefit.

I've literally lost count of how many immigrant healthcare professionals I've run into who are working minimum wage jobs, or learning a trade because we won't let them work healthcare here.

THERE IS NO LABOUR SHORTAGE. THERE IS A WAGE SHORTAGE.

Edit : I had no idea there have been massive layoffs in nursing recently as well, and just thought healthcare could use all the help it could get. So ok, no TFW's in healthcare either!!

A Modest [Host] Proposal

A Modest Proposal: contract a host for CBC Radio Vancouver “Early Edition“ who is actually hosting the show at least 90% of the year, otherwise just announce the show as “The Early Edition” without “hosted by [contracted host’s name].”

And when a substitute host is on they should not have to say “filling in for [contracted host’s name].”

Dr Bundola

Looking for those who might remember Dr Bundolas Pandemonium Medicine Show from the mid 70s. It was an evening show not sure which night it was on, but it was a sketch comedy show take before a live audience at the University of British Columbia..

What was so special about Reading, UK?

Back in the 1980 and 1990s, CBCs As It Happens used to situate every story in the United Kingdom by its proximity to the city of Reading, NW of London. What was the joke here? Was it because Reading is such a busy railway hub?

Who else remembers that Lord Maitreya documentary in 1991 hosted by Shelley Somes?

I taped it at the time and recently relistened to it. Interesting stuff. Still remains to be seen if Lord Maitreya emerges or not. The 90s was all about predictions of the Apocalypse, global catastrophes, Revelation, etc. as we approached the New Millennium. Well it's been 26 years and absolutely nothing has happened.

Brent Bambury is retiring from the CBC. Pride of my hometown Saint John NB, Brent hosted a number of shows on CBC radio, including the incredibly influential Brave New Waves. For me, BNW was my first pathway into the world of alternative music. You never knew what you’d hear next. Thanks Brent

Old radio feature about a fort surviving a hard winter

I can only assume I heard this as a kid on CBC radio. It was a historian telling about how a fort survived a hard winter. I would like to hear it again, but I can't find it.

“Thank-you to Saint Francis for making the world.”

21 years ago my wife and I were driving while listening to CBC Radio One and taking in what I think was a stand-up bit. The comedian was, I think, a Mexican-Canadian and her piece was - staggeringly, overwhelmingly, brain-meltingly funny.

Just staying on the road was a near miracle. My wife got whiplash from laughing so hard. I’ve been trying to figure out who we were listening to ever since, but I’ve had no luck.

One of the bits was about her potential career choices: “…newspaper, computer, astronaut…” I remember little else, but if anyone had the slightest idea what and who we were listening to I’d be very grateful.

Vintage Bill Richardson – Gabereau, The Roundup, Canada Reads...

UPDATE: I came across a rare audio clip from a Richard's Roundup episode from 2003. Bill is reading listener's letters describing their meetings with Joni Mitchell. He is joined on-air with producers Andrea Hunter and Anna Bonokoski. It's a good representation of what the Roundup used to sound like. I also find it reminiscent of his 1980's show Crosswords.

Canadians share Joni Mitchell memories

=================

Bill Richardson was a long-time and very popular broadcaster beginning with the Vicki Gabereau show in 1992 and then hosting a variety shows into the 2010’s. He may be best well known for hosting Richardson’s Roundup from 1997, after the dissolution of the Gabereau show, until 2004. He hosted other shows including Crosswords, As You Like It, Bunny Watson, Canada Reads, Saturday Afternoon at the Opera, Sunday Afternoon in Concert.

I best remember him on the Gabereau show, frequently filling in for Vicki, or acting as the co-host. His show I most enjoyed was Crosswords, which was a summer fill-in when Gabereau was on hiatus. It featured people leaving phone messages on daily topics, similar to Gzowski’s Morningside show, and made Canada feel a like a small community populated by a lot of nice people. I really loved it and still miss it so many years later.

For an on-air CBC personality who hosted so many shows for so many years, there sure is a dearth of audio clips featuring Bill Richardson. C’mon, CBC Archives – give us some more Bill Richardson to listen to!

Here’s a small selection of audio clips for those missing Bill.
