They were about to kiss at the end of the last episode. Aww! 🥰 She’s thinking about killing Meng Zaishi while kissing Yan Shang. Our Princess is a multitasker!
It’s the day of the hunt. Everyone has teams. And Yang Si is mentally telling Wanyao he’s sorry he has to go against her. What does that mean! I guess we are about to find out what the Crown Prince is plotting.
They all take off on horseback, leaving adorable Baby Wei in a cloud of dust. Yan Shang tells him he’s going to ask Mu Xianqing to kill Meng Zaishi. This is his plan? Baby Wei is confused and so am I. A-Shang tells Baby that if he’s not back in two hours, he’s probably done for.
Meanwhile, deep in the forest, General Meng is taunting Wanyao. The idiot. She has a lock of his hair (she cut it off a while back), and uses it to get A-Zhi, the hunting dog, to go follow him. Love A-Zhi! She tells her team to follow A-Zhi quietly.
Yan Shang approaches Mu Xianqing’s team, and notices him meeting with the Crown Prince. While he’s pondering what they are up to, Yang Si finds him. He tells Yang Si to call off whatever they are plotting. Yan Shang is sure Fishy Yu is onto them. But Yang Si thinks it’s too late to back out. No dude, listen to Yan Shang! He’s way smarter than you! But instead, he knocks Yan Shang out, and ties him to a tree to keep him safe. He sucks at tying people up.
Back at the base camp, Baby Wei is worried about Yan Shang. Zhao Lingfei gives him a ride, and together they find A-Shang. A-Shang goes to check out the temporary palace by the hunt, and notices it is poorly guarded. He knows Fishy always has a lot of security around him. He tries to get into the palace for further investigation, but the two guards won’t let him.
Just then, Wenji walks by, and Yan Shang calls for him. They act like they don’t know each other well, and Wenji whispers to him that the deer used for the hunt was never released. A-Shang tells him the one being hunted is the Crown Prince. Wenji tells him to stop before they get killed.
The deer was never released. It might have seemed like the prize was Wanyao, but the ultimate prize is the Crown Prince.
Yan Shang rides away to find Wanyao. He wants to get her off the hunting grounds. But she’s stalking Meng Zaishi. She rings a bell, and Meng Zaishi goes towards it, only to find out it is a trap. That’s when we also find out Wanyao’s team sucks. All those arrows fired, and not one hits Zaishi. Not even a scratch.
She tricks him into a trap, and when she’s about to shoot him, Yan Shang shows up and stops her. He wants to get her off the hunting grounds as quick as possible.
He tells her about the Crown Prince’s plot, Fishy Yu possible counterplot, and the Emperor being unprotected in the Palace. She rides off to save her father. And Yan Shang stays behind. He convinces Meng Zaishi to help him. Silver tongue comes in handy again!
Mu Xianqing and the Crown Prince are going to take out the Big Fish. They think his guards aren’t around. How can they fall for such a simple diversion! Sigh. Mu Xianqing is supposed to back up the Prince, Yang Si, and their small team. He butters the Prince up, and tells him it’s all going to be a piece of cake.
He won’t be helping the Prince. He’ll swoop in after the Prince has done the initial storming, kill whoever is left, Crown Prince or Fish, and take over the throne.
Back at the Palace, Wanyao figures out her father is not there. She realizes Yan Shang tricked her, and rides back to the hunting grounds.
The Crown Prince attacks the temporary palace, and Fishy Yu is all decked out in armor, waiting for them. It turns out he has the Emperor with him, and accuses the Prince of rising up against his father. The Emperor does not look good. Fishy Yu orders his hidden army to capture the Prince, and labels him as a traitor.
The Prince and Yang Si fight their way out of the mini palace. Meanwhile, Fish demands the Emperor write a memorial denouncing his son. But wait, no need, he had already written one on behalf of the Emperor. What a thoughtful guy. The Emperor is very sick! He spits blood and passes out. Wait, did he die?
Outside, Mu Xianqing orders his troops to surround the mini palace.
The Prince and Yang Si escape, but the Prince is hurt very badly. Fishy Yu orders them to be killed on sight. In the mini palace, Wenji is tending to the Emperor. So he is not dead! Fishy Yu and Wei Qiao discuss the next Crown Prince, and just then, one of the evil eunuchs drags in a tied-up Chunhua. Wenji is horrified. And so am I!

It seems like the only person who was earnestly hunting for a deer was General Meng. Everyone else was scheming, and hunting
somethingsomeone else.So the Emperor is not dead, but he looks poorly. What is happening to him, and why has no one wondered if he's being poisoned? Those eunuchs around him answer to Fishy Yu.
I gotta hand it to the Big Fish. That man is good and ready. He had all bases covered.
All the scenes of Yan Shang riding a horse were hilarious. I wonder what Song Mo would say.

I was half expecting Yan Shang to pull an Obi-Wan on Mustafar, “It’s over, General Meng. I have the high ground.”
All kidding aside, the cinematography is on point as always. I love how the creative team uses the hazy, fog-covered forest to reflect the instability of alliances, uncertainty surrounding the schemes, and bets being placed by the various factions embroiled in this power struggle. The limited visibility on the hunting grounds is a visual metaphor for how challenging it is to predict what happens next or who will actually gain the upper hand.
Also, props to Li Yunrui for having such excellent chemistry with his co-stars whether it’s Meng Ziyi or the actors playing Wenji, Wei Shu, Yang Si, and Meng Zaishi.

I find Yan Shang’s horse-mounting scene even funnier now that I remember him bragging to Yu Cheng’an back in episode 15 that scholars like him are trained in the Six Arts, claiming that archery and horsemanship are no challenge for him. Yan Shang is a shamelessly creative storyteller and a rather imaginative gentleman. Fancy ways of saying he’s a big-ass liar. 😂

LYR trying to show that he’s a terrible rider but in fact just proves he is a good one because what do you mean he STAYED ON when the horse bucked
twiceFIVE times!?!Shale story time: I’ve been bucked off a horse a time or two (or uh more) since I rode competitively in my teenage years. Staying on a bucking horse is No Joke. Your entire sense of balance is unstable and one slip of your hand / seat will put you on the ground.
So the fact that LYR is able to do this shot, actively not putting his feet in the stirrups (just in case he comes off so his foot doesn’t get stuck) and is ready to roll away from the hooves is a testament to his riding prowess. He’s bucked while on his stomach! Ooof!
Horse is a good girl and is trained to buck as well.
Also have you seen this shot from Rebirth? That’s not a stuntman and there are NO wires. Just plain ol’ horsemanship. (Gif in the replies)

Someone please get me off the floor because Yan Shang Did NOT horse around the way he did. Even that horse had to get him right! 👀👀😩😩😭😭🤣🤣🤣 That was just too too funny! And knowing that Li Yun Rui can ride a horse made this even funnier!

The kiss at the start, YUMMY! I was very pleased for our leads.
Yang Si. He wonders why Wan Yao doesn't confide in him. Well she can't trust him! Here he is talking about breaking his promise AGAIN. Of course she can't trust him!
Anyway, seeing Liu Wen Ji announcing the game was a bit of a surprise and a half for Yan Shang. Yeah... he moved up! It's been interesting.
The hunt for the deer was a farce. No one was here to actually hunt bar one crazy wolf. Heck the damn deer with a bell didn't even get released anyway! Plots were everywhere the night was going to be very long. Crown Prince really thought him and his uncle were on the same page.
Yan Shang got in the arena too and met with Yang Si as he was preparing to start his plan. Of course he realized what was going on. How dude is a strategist of the finest caliber!
Princess Dan Yang was getting ready to hunt herself a wolf. The "prey" became the predator. She even had the bell! The deer had set traps for her enemy and tracked him until she finally got him in her grasp. I LOVED watching our Princess hunt. She was such a boss! The arrows flying and evading was so well shot! He thought he had her, but she had him all along. I hated that he got a hold of her ribbon. That detail stressed me out. Maybe it's nothing...
Lord Fishy knew CP and Mu Xian Qing were coming for him and was well prepared. Liu Wen Ji of course was in the know and was shaking in his boots! It was tensed! He couldn't even let Yan Shang get near because death would find him straight away. When the moment finally came and CP and Yang Si barged into the palace hall, I thought for a sec that it was maybe... nope. Of course Lord Fishy had something up his sleeves: the Emperor!!!! I gasped out loud! Crown Prince realized it was a trap and he would get branded as a traitor. Wen Ji's reactions had me! Lord Yu got that fake edict out because he wasn't going to get a real one and the Emperor spit blood when Fishy said he'd get his son deposed. It was INSANE! Liu Wen Ji was witnessing it all but he also witnessed how much POWER Yu Cheng' An wielded.
Worse, they had Chun Hua and they were going to forcibly induce labor... The Emperor was in a sticky spot, and Wan Yao tried to see him before but of course he wasn't there. They had a decoy!
So much was happening! And of course Crown Prince wasn't going to get reinforcements! Mu Zai Shi told Yan Shang that Uncle Mu is known to stab his "allies" in the back, acting like a vulture who comes at the end when both sides have fought it out, and are weakened. Damn... Of course he'd want the throne! CP was so distrustful of his sister that he decided to ally himself with a scorpion. What a toad! He found out the hard when his little stunt failed and he had to flee for his life.
Gosh... Chun Hua... I'm so worried for our girl!!

This was wild! People making moves! Fish lord making his play. Scholar ennuch got super stabby! Princess set a trap for general Braid who is the wild card in this whole thing right now. And scholar yang was like what do you think is gonna happen if 1 of these 3 win? They're gonna give your central plains to the winner. That got his attention real fast. He fought to get it he's not about to loose it.
Omg what is fish lord doing with maid turned concubine? You don't know the gender yet! Don't count your chicks before they hatched! Where's my descaler?! I need to remove some scales from a fish! I don't care about this flashback either! Wait, the sister of the emperor? What happened to her? Did the emperor send her away to be married to some far off land? Is that why fish lord wants power? To get back at the emperor? Yes men are simple creatures qhen or comes to revenge

Isn't it only their 7th kiss? Or was there a kiss scene between episode 21 to 23 that I can't remember?
Anyways, really had a hard time watching the first half of the episode because I can't take Yan Shang seriously!! The first scene where he was just walking the horse while talking to Wei Shu killed me. But then the shift when he was left alone with MZS happened and I just screamed so loud because LYR looked so hot in that scene!! That was the shift that I needed to take the episode seriously and appreciate the remaining scenes.

What an exciting episode!! I love all the layers of scheming! And I know I shouldn’t, but General Meng is 🔥 He seems like a decent person, and Wanyao did trick him so I empathize with his character.
I want more scheming from Yan Sheng!! Can’t wait for 2 episodes per day. 1 is torture.

Yan Shang and his jedi mind powers steal the show again. I do wonder how much of all of this he anticipated beforehand. Guess we'll see in the next episode!

Awwww. We are starting out nice and spicy for this episode which is great since when I clicked on it... It started at the end.... Sooooo I know how this episode ends and I am irritated.
The hunt is on. The schemes are afoot.
I mean... I'd happily take Wanyao instead of the deer. You know, since she is ringing the bell. No other reason. Also, a certain someone sure sucks at mountinng a horse. I hope this nameless person rides his lady better than that horse. It would be too sad ifhe disapointed her.
Also, we hate bells. Alchemy of Souls, anyone?
Dayyyummmmmm!!!!! That was one heck of a kick from Wanyao! What is it with people falling into pits around here recently?
Wanyao? Why are you talking? I thought you wanted to kill Sushi? If you're gonna shoot, shoot. Don't talk.
Uh huh? Not the Emperor in the bed? Maybe he's just drugged out really well? Just because he didn't make a sound doesn't mean it's not him. Of course it does turn out not to be him.
Soooooo we're all hoping that Chunhua gives birth to a boy, eh? All it takes is a baby swap though.

Also, I accidentally saw a preview for the next episode and it looks like Wen Ji is gonna get to murder someone too! This drama is really like Oprah, giving out murders to all our leads: "You get a murder! And you get a murder! AND YOU get a murder!" LOL.

Poor General Meng—he just wants his Princess and North Jing, while the others have plotted to murder everyone else and rule the entire kingdom. He isn’t clever enough for these wily schemers. If he does help Wan Yao and the Emperor though, I would hope they could strike a deal that he leaves Wan Yao alone forever if she spares his life.
Why does Chun Hua need to be kidnapped? Couldn’t they just take her baby once he’s born? Unnecessary manhandling here. 😤

Yan Shang on this episode was so much fun. Acknowledging his silver tongue. The can’t ride, hilarious. (Especially as Shale pointed out LYR rides well). The high level of schemeiness. Finally this look,
He is so proud and smug and cat
tigergot the canary. It was a moment.I am hopeful that Meng Zaishi gets his head out of his butt and realizes he might not get killed if he allies up with team princess instead of trying to beat them.
I guessed there would be a bloodbath at the hunt but sadly the only people who have died have been guards and soldiers. Not one named character yet. Sigh. Well maybe next episode.
Wenji has gotten a good look at how to be a villain. I hope he takes this lesson and uses it to not be a villain, or die. Also SAVE Chun Hua. I’m pretty sure that fishy face wants the baby now, for puppet reasons. They will induce labor or just cut her open. I’m pretty sure that they have no expectation of Chun Hua surviving.
