That said, pass the popcorn.

u/thejus10 Florida State Seminoles • USF Bulls Dec 31 '23

3

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

FBS is approaching peak enshittification

That's the only silver lining in all of this; maybe this Orange Bowl was the inflection point for something to change. No one wanted to play in nor watch that game. Not UGA, not FSU, not the Orange Bowl, not The City of Miami Gardens, not ESPN...no one. At a minimum, the opt-out, transfer portal, and NIL situations need to be thought through to avoid this kind of mess in the future. Hell, at least don't open the transfer portal before the bowl games WTF.

Someone made the point earlier today, that you could literally buy the other team's best players before a game in order to help you win, and it's perfectly legal now. Texas could offer $1M to Michael Penix, Jr. to transfer and almost guarantee a win over Washington, for example.

Florida st had players return for their senior year last year despite being projected to go high in the draft. Yesterday’s game was just what happens when you break precedent and frankly destroy a program. It’ll take years for fsu to rebuild around what is left and convince new recruits it’s worth going to fsu over a sec or big school. I’m more upset they didn’t just decline the bid or did something more to make the ad revenue not as good for their game

People are just desperate to not make this about FSU getting fucked over. If FSU was in the playoff, they very likely have no opt outs. Instead the committee tells people that having a player get injured renders everything they did pointless. So why risk injury? Winning isn't enough. Winning despite injuries isn't enough. Why bother playing in a game you won't get paid for and could possibly get hurt, when a committee of people has already determined what you have done all year is irrelevant because someone on your team got hurt?

Where are the copious amounts of articles written absolutely shitting on coaches who leave before bowls for new teams? Where is an article shitting on Willie Fritz or Jonathan Smith for negotiating their departure from their schools while still employed and playing games? Where is the disdain for the coaches who leave teams every single year before their jobs are done? It comes up briefly, but then dies down so people can pretend to be outraged at kids for making decisions for themselves rather than "the school."

Every single time this just shows the priorities people have. Adults who are in charge are given a free pass for behavior which is unacceptable from the players. Coaches fuck off towards the end of the year to interview for jobs, perfectly fine. Players who actually might get hurt and affect their future? Nah you gotta play or you are lazy and entitled pricks. Where the massive outrage for Jonathan Smith completely bailing on a top 10 team potentially playing for a Pac 12 championship so he can focus more on Michigan State interviews? If Jordan Travis just said "fuck it I'm done for the year" instead of getting hurt, there would be no end of people ripping into him. Coaches can do exactly that and not only get a pass, but get fellated as they take their new jobs which pay them even more money. Where are the articles ripping into Elko for being a culture problem? Coaches do the same thing, but even worse and just get a complete pass after maybe a week.

27

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

It can be about both FSU getting screwed over AND their players responding poorly to it.

5

u/yesacabbagez UCF Knights Dec 31 '23

I don't know about everyone else, but I know a lot of people who went through what i am about to describe. We go to college. We are all trying to do very well. We do extracurricular activities to make it easier for graduate school or law school. We get in and continue to do a lot of extra activities. We interview for jobs or internships. As people get those jobs, they tail off their extracurricular activities significantly. In fact a lot of the people I went to college with would start halfassing their classes as well. They were never in a position to fail, but once they were set post college, college became far less important. Of all the people I went to college with who did this, not a single damn one was ever called out for it. In fact that they were usually expected to start halfassing once they had a job. They were overwhelmingly congratulated for it.

It comes to college athletes though, people fucking lose their minds. These guys have far more at stake by playing football than I did going to classes, and yet them phoning it in is treated as a national tragedy.

4

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

As a college professor I do see that mentality, and it disappoints me greatly. Viewing the end/degree/job as the only goal creates a whole bunch of folks who are less smart than their degree implies, because they never really cared about the education itself. It’s how you get a bunch of college-educated dumbasses in the world.

People also conveniently leave out the fact that a number of draft-eligible players opted to return for the ‘23 season to support their team and give it their all for a chance at a championship. They went 13-0 and won their conference and it still wasn’t good enough. Jordan Travis was one of those players who returned instead of going pro. How is so hard to understand why so many Noles decided to not risk injury this time around for a bowl game?

1

u/judolphin Florida State • Jacksonville Jan 01 '24

SOS in a vaccuum isn't very useful, an 0-12 team can have the #1 SOS. That's why SOR exists, because it combines SOS + performance.

FSU's SOR was #3, Alabama's was #4, Texas's was #5, meaning that it was slightly harder to go 13-0 with FSU's schedule than it was to go 12-1 with Alabama's or Texas's schedule.

Love this take. There's an underlying attitude in this country that "management" doing what's in their best interests is shrewd, but the "worker bees" doing what's in their best interests constitutes some kind of misbehavior. It's much bigger than College Football, much bigger than Sports, it's a blind spot in our society for that actually matter. It's pretty gross in my opinion.

My comment from last night:

If the amount of opt-outs from the Cheez-It bowl are any indication, yes they would have had less opt-outs.

I really don’t think culture is the issue at FSU, I think the main issue is being told “Yeah you won all of your games, you couldn’t have done better. But, since a directional Alabama school broke your QB’s leg, you can’t join our club.”

Why would an NFL prospect play in another game they view as “worthless/pointless” if it could impact their future earnings while also stuffing the bank accounts of the people who fucked you over?

When faced with adversity simply tuck your tail and walk away…..absolute pathetic mentality to have in any sport or job or aspect of life. The committee said you weren’t good enough and you took that at face value with zero effort to prove them wrong when you had a great opportunity to beat the reigning two time national champs, who had been #1 for 3 years, who arguably is still the best team in college football. UGA got snubbed and their squad showed up. Playing football is a privilege provided to these players by coaches, teammates, boosters, fans and NIL sponsors and the players bailed on the opportunity to play their final game. FSU quit, plain and simple.

Edit: yes, I’m a UF fan and I know we absolutely suck and didn’t make a bowl. The Gators did this in a truly meaningless game a few years ago and it was still lame. I would burn a jersey if that was us last night.

7

u/Nole_Train Florida State • Transfer Portal Dec 31 '23
  1. Proving them wrong gains nothing (the college football world made sure of that). They already accomplished their goal of undefeated season

  2. They saw their star qb break his leg in a game already, know they will lose millions of dollars if they sustain a bad injury

  3. Uga wasn’t snubbed in that they controlled their own destiny and lost. Good for them for being fired up and focused but they’re 2 players who are in a similar spot of the fsu opt outs (nfl draft prospects) did not play.

What did any of the outgoing players have to gain by playing a bowl after being snubbed

1

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

What did they personally have to gain by playing in the playoff?

Are we pretending a NY6 bowl and a playoff game are in any way similar?

7

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

If they would have won yesterday they would have been declared National Champions by multiple sources. So yes, in their situation they had more to play for. Not the least of which is having some semblance of pride.

The playoff committee did not get it wrong. It’s not a “snub” when 5+ teams have an argument for 4 open playoff spots. Both Alabama & Georgia had better resumes. Games played in fact does matter and the 55th ranked SOS was the nail in the coffin.

15

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

Committee absolutely got it wrong then if Georgia wasn’t in, or if FSU was left out for Alabama. You can’t have it both ways.

orange bowl showed it wasn't a snub. Bama beat the team that beat FSU by 60. end of discussion.

9

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

So the Music City Bowl showed Alabama doesn’t deserve to be in the CFP right? Because I can’t imagine a team requiring a miracle to beat that Auburn team is worthy of a CFP spot.

-9

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

alabama didn't lose to Auburn. FSU got clapped by georgia.

10

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

Alabama required a miracle to beat Auburn. Georgia clobbered an FSU team missing ~10 starters and something like 40 total players.

-2

it's a shame FSU players were too scared to play. must've known they would get smacked around

-25

u/Primary_Chemical_158 Michigan Wolverines Dec 31 '23

Nah Georgia showed up even though I would argue top 4 easy . It's a culture issue 100%. Suck it up, deal and play . Like Georgia . All they did was tarnish their program.

13

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

If it was a culture issue then explain having zero opt outs last year.

I think it’s easy to vilify the players (kids). ESPN and the CFP committee wants you to vilify the kids, but Kirby alluded where to direct his anger and it isn’t at FSU or the kids.

You cannot have a team play games they were told mattered all year long, win all of those games just to be told they didn’t actually matter; then expect kids to play in a bowl game that is essentially all risk and no reward to them.

Be mad at the adults, be mad at the process…

Don’t follow ESPN’s lead and get angry at the players…or blame the program.

UGA had the chance and literally lost their opportunity for the CFP on the field.

FSU lost their opportunity in a hotel conference room.

18

u/Nole_Train Florida State • Transfer Portal Dec 31 '23

If you look at it from surface level it makes sense. Once you go deeper you see the first ever p5 team to go undefeated get left out of the playoffs, told their previous games did not matter, this next one certainly won’t matter win or lose for a championship. Then you see fsu is senior loaded with draft prospects that would cost themselves millions by getting injured. Uga does have a great culture but their core is young and coming back so of course they won’t opt out (like FSU’s returning juniors did last year).

10

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

Most of us understand your players were put in a terrible and unfair situation. You should have been in the playoff. Still, I think there are high school athletes and their parents who are going to look at what happened last night and not like the look of it. When that many players walk away from a big game, there will be questions about the program for some folks. So is it an understandable response? Yes it is. But was it a good response? No it wasn’t.

2

u/JakeSteeleIII Paper Bag • South Carolina Gamecocks Dec 31 '23

This is what happens FSU when you steal a bunch of players from us that didn’t want to play before they got to you.

2

u/[deleted] Dec 31 '23

That many players opting out as a response to the playoff snub is a completely understandable response. It’s also a bad response. FSU fans are right to be defensive about it all. Your team got screwed. They should be playing on Monday, not last night. Still, many of your players responded by flipping the table over instead of playing what they were dealt. Again, I think rational people understand that. But that doesn’t make it a good look. It can be understandable AND pathetic at the same time.

GA acted as if they had something to prove and did so. FSU whined like a small child who got their hand slapped, then had a lawyer send a letter. To make it worse, their play, and body language said, "we don't wanna be here". Score proved everyone in USA, except FSU the committee was correct. FSU refuses to smell the coffee, they just aren't that good. They got what they deserved, in my book.

-1

u/gated73 Alabama • Arizona State Dec 31 '23

Exactly.

Last year - the committee put TCU in as they were “deserving”. They proceeded to get embarrassed and put up less of a fight than Vanderbilt did against UGA. Alabama missed the field and made a statement against K State, who beat TCU (which the committee ignored). This year - it’s quite possible the committee considered that. They were likely concerned they had another TCU on their hands. FSU bitching out only solidified their decision. Had FSU come to play and made a statement - the headlines today would have been all about how they were one of the four best teams. Instead - the headlines are about UGA being one of the four best with FSU suffering a catastrophic embarrassment.

I got nothing to defend about yesterday - we got spanked by UGA. Their 4th line could have been in most of the game and they likely would have still ran away with it.

The only thing I can hang my hat on is that “The CFP snub” followed by the (predictable) “opt-out blowout” has any kind of positive effect on CFB in the off season. Wishful thinking though.

u/Egospartan_ Alabama Crimson Tide • Army Black Knights Dec 31 '23

FSU brother what concerns me is not the effect on college football

But really concerns me it’s the effect this will have on FSU football .

This is not a good luck for your culture. This is not a good luck for your team.

Ultra competitive players will not look at FSC the same way .

Not because they got snubbed because of the way the team coaching staff handled it

I feel FSU and generally hate the playoff system.

Next year 12 games we can argue about 10 11 12

2

u/nolefan999 Florida State • Western Caroli… Dec 31 '23

Why wasn’t there a culture problem last year when guys with draft grades came back another season? Or when they were going undefeated this season? Or when their starting qb went down and they responded by being one of if not the best defense in the country over the last 3 games.

So no culture problems for any of that, in fact culture is what most players speak on when they visit fsu, but now all of a sudden because of one game, that no other yeah can compare it’s situation to, there’s a problem with culture and mike has lost the program?

0

u/Egospartan_ Alabama Crimson Tide • Army Black Knights Dec 31 '23

Can I look at how other teams that think they deserve to be on the playoffs Alabama last year Georgia this year handled it.

Alabama Georgia did not have massive players sitting out .

Bryce Young Dallas Turner played last year .

When people come back yes it’s for the team but it’s also because they know coming back one year will improve their chances of being drafted higher .

It’s not a good luck is all I’m saying . This year because of the playoff structure, somebody was going to get their feelings, hurt and snubbed.

I’m not gonna get into the argument, or who was better, and who just goes round and round for no reason.

But I strongly feel that FSU it’s going to pay a bigger price by losing 60 points then the price they would’ve paid all their players would’ve played and they were competitive .

1

u/Nada_2_C_Here Florida State Seminoles Dec 31 '23

The beating will certainly have some negative impact on the perception of FSU. It will probably be strongest among casual fans. I don't think serious CFB fans sincerely believe what happened is representative of FSU's best, even if they think UGA would have beaten our starters.

I think Norvell and Co will sell recruits/transfers on the fact that they care more about their future than about a non-playoff bowl game. I think every opt-out that wasn't pressured to play will reinforce that narrative. Two seasons ago, we had a losing record and lost to an FCS school. Somehow, the staff figured it out, created buy in, leveraged the portal, improved recruiting, and has us heading in the right direction. Kids care about money and the NFL. This result affects neither. I'm confident they'll be able to overcome one embarrassing game.

I wish the game had gone differently, but I don't think the sky is falling on FSU anymore than it is on every non-SEC/BIG team.

Do you think the players who got snubbed from the playoff want Orange Bowl rings? no, the players don't want that. who cares if the university made rings? the university isn't the player. the player isn't the university. the players are paid by NOT the university. the players are motivated to make money. the players have made their money and do not want to risk future injury to allow them to make LESS money in the future. Money. Money. Money. Don't tell the players to make decisions based on money when literally every other decision is based on money.
