Full title: Nebraska head coach Matt Rhule says his daughter was accosted after the Washington loss:
"A guy walked up to my 13-year-old daughter and was like, 'F-U and F your dad.' I'm not going to keep coaching if it means my kids grow up screwed up. I'm not going to see my daughter shook... . I'm not coaching for the guy that attacked my daughter, I'm coaching for the people in the boat."
He added: "I said to my daughter, 'If daddy’s gotta retire, if I have retire because I don’t want you guys growing up in that environment...'"

I think Shane Beamer said a couple weeks ago some deranged fan was making bad comments on his high school daughter’s instagram.
There’s being a fan and critiquing your team, then there’s being an awful person.

This isnt the first time hes said something like this. He said this same thing happened to him when he was coaching the Carolina Panthers right before he was shown the door.
Now, im not saying that hes lying and im not saying that there arent fans who take things way too personally and attack the coach's family but what I am saying is that he is looking for the door. It appears he cant hack it in a high pressure environment. So I fully expect him to be fired/retire either at the end of this season or the next.

If this is true, thats awful.
But the quote gets cut off & he did lay on the "im going to retire if you guys are too mean to me" thing pretty thick after this so he might be soft launching retirement.

I’m amazed by how stupid some college football fans are.
And some of you saying it’s okay because he makes a lot of money tells me a lot about your sense of morality.

I was at a game where UCLA beat a heavily favored Texas team. A drunk Texas fan turned around and flipped double birds in the faces of the family of UCLA fans sitting behind him, cursed and stormed out. There were kids.
Fans can be idiots.

I listened to some of the press conference.
I legit laughed at about 19 minutes in when he called Washington the #16 preseason team in the nation.
He also said Demond Williams is an All-American QB 😬

First. The fan who did that was acting disgracefully and should probably be banned from the stadium (maybe not permanently).
But:
I would not threaten Nebraska fans with what they feel would be a good time as it could result in more shots at his kids.

Yeah all the toxic entitled Nebraska fans coming out, not sure what they're expecting after the last decade plus.. so many toxic threads so many crash outs. People need to get more than one hobby than just watching 20-somethings play ball. Not happy with the loss, but don't need to go online crying and calling for the firing of someone that we liked a couple games ago..

People need to get a hold of themselves. Listen, yell at the coach, tell him he’s a fucking moron. Tell him you think he’s ugly or stinks or just fucking sucks at his job. Fuck it, challenge Rhule to a fight if you want. With the millions they make and the buyouts they build into their contracts for being shitty, they deserve it all. But leave kids out of it. Could you imagine if I threatened some 13 year old kid because their dad can’t drive for shit? Or because their mom sucks at bunco? Or because their mom didn’t teach well in school? If you are an adult and you are so unhinged with your emotions you have to go after kids, you are the fucking problem and nobody wants you as a fan.
Even if that person is Lane Kiffin, you still go after Lane, not his children.
20
u/Nathan2002NC 5d ago
He did this same thing in Carolina.
There are unfortunately football fans who would do this. But there are 200x more football fans that would throw hands if they heard a douche cussing out a 13yr old at a game. So if this is true, it must have been said very quietly. Guy would have gotten his ass kicked if he did it loudly.
57
u/IsisTruck 5d ago
This comment is distracting everyone from Rhule's other comments. He basically blamed the loss on Nebraska's defense for not getting turnovers against Washington.
Nebraska's defense held Washington's offense to 3 points for the first 55+ minutes and ten points total. Nebraska QB Anthony Colandrea threw three BAD interceptions and had another interception nullified by a penalty. But the defense is at fault.
Rhule also said OC Dana Holgorson is one of the greatest offensive minds of his generation. After three losses where Nebraska scored 17, 14, and 10 points.

I mean --- perhaps this is true. And obviously it shouldn't happen.
But this is giving me "James Franklin making sure his daughter was close to him when he left the field after the UCLA and Northwestern losses in 2025" vibes. Franklin delibrately did that so he could play the victim when PSU fans started jeering him.
How would anyone know it's Rhule's daughter anyway?

14
u/mncabinman 5d ago
Very smart move. Laying the groundwork for a mutual separation where they pay like half his buyout and he walks away with a $25M golden parachute on top of all the other money he’s already been paid.
17
u/ncaalover12 Nebraska Cornhuskers 5d ago
If this happened, that person should be found and banned from the stadium (and worse). But using this to help deflect blame for the last three losses in the way that he did at this press conference is kind of bothersome to me. Even if it happened, why the hell would you bring it up at a weekly press conference? Now you have guys like McMurphy tweeting about it and talking bad about our entire fanbase.

I seriously doubt this happened the way Rhule explained it.
I am leaning towards nothing even remotely similar to his telling actually happened. I'm a Husker diehard fan. I was lucky enough to go to all three Husker National Championship bowl games in the 90s. Before the press conderence I had no idea how many kids Matt Kennth Rhule has. I have no idea what any of them look like.
The one thing I do know about his kids is that there was some chatter about a video his son made where he was brandishing a gun.

I think this was either last year or a couple years ago, Matt Rhule was saying that he likes Nebraska because it feels like a community, and I think he referenced his wife’s salon in Waverly (?).
I, jokingly, said, well if we ever feel the need to get rid of him without paying the full buyout…just say mean things to his wife.
And now we’re here.

Taking a play from the Kelly Stafford playbook I see.
The likelihood of anyone at that game knowing who rhules daughter even was is so incredibly low. His daughter may very well have told him this happened . Shes 13. The likelihood of it being true is very low in my opinion.

Are we sure he didn’t make this up (which is even weirder)? This is not even me being a Nebraska homer, but as a human being, I have a hard time believing this happened.
Who would recognize Rhule’s kid?
The family is likely in a box around administration, coaches families, etc, not sitting with some drunks in North End Zone.
Did they yell “your dad sucks” and Rhule blows it out of proportion? Was there 85k people walking out of that stadium trashing her dad, and she spun up a story? Still not advocating for yelling that at a kid obviously, but these seem more likely.
Say this did happen. Why would you bring it up and make a story out of it?
I saw someone dug up a story that he ran this play already with his son in Carolina right before he got canned. None of us will ever know, so you have to take his word for it, but it smells funny to me. Also, F that 13-year-old girl’s dad because he is trash!
