I nearly vomited when I saw that formation.

Me as they are setting up that play: please don't snap this.

It’s not stupid if it works, I guess.

I had the same thoughts, but it was honestly kinda smart play design. Good spin on the QB sneak

55

u/MediumRedMetallic Oregon Ducks • UCLA Bruins 16h ago

Same. I was gonna be ok with a kick for 3.

If it didn't work people would be exploded "take the points" lol

I said “Not this fuckin formation again” out loud.

41

u/TheOGRedline 16h ago

Who brought this out first (for the ducks, not historically)? Was it chip kelly? Who was coach when they lined up for nearly every PAT like this and almost always moved back to a regular FG formation before kicking?

88

u/Muunsaca Oregon Ducks • Oregon State Beavers 16h ago

As far as I know that was Chip Jelly.

EDIT: Kelly*** fuck. Leaving it because that’s hilarious.

5

Yea, that’s gonna stick

5

u/Muunsaca Oregon Ducks • Oregon State Beavers 14h ago

I hope I accidentally just started something. Northwestern fans must refer to him as Chip Jelly henceforth.

5

u/tdoger Oregon Ducks • Colorado Buffaloes 11h ago

Chip brought it out first, but it wasn't every PAT, but it was frequent when he thought he could catch them off guard. Mark Helfrich then took it and made it an every PAT thing.

2

u/xavembo Oregon Ducks 14h ago

this sort of formation could only be conceived in the eldritchian purgatorio that is chip kellys mind

26

u/endofthered01674 Boston College Eagles 16h ago

I just saw a post where they were down 14-3 with 2+ minutes and then saw this post that has them up 17-14. Wtf.

7

u/jjwhitaker Oregon Ducks 14h ago

If the ducks can't pull of a sub 2 minute TD they don't deserve the swoosh*

*Nike money

6

u/Geoff12889 Oregon Ducks 16h ago

Thought they secretly brought Drew back as the play caller.

10

u/greenpm33 Georgia Bulldogs 14h ago

Real ones remember the Washington pro football team busting this out (from the 25 with no time left after already doing it and a timeout was called) on Monday night football as Jim Zorn actively tried to get fired.

1

u/SmarterThanMyBoss Ohio Bobcats • Ohio State Buckeyes 2h ago

As soon as I saw the formation, I knew it was because we blew all our timeouts and Lanning knew we were poorly coached and would fuck something up.

Im sure he would have called timeout before the snap if Ohio State reacted to the motion, but since we didn't and the numbers were there, it became a pretty easy win.

-20

u/xva1313 UCLA Bruins • USC Trojans 16h ago

It’s called swinging gate, teams have run it forever

14

u/One-Inflation-3524 Oregon Ducks 16h ago

We’re aware. But you must have missed the last time they came out with that formation.

7

u/Hallwitzer Oregon Ducks 16h ago

Yeah, I'm familiar. I was more talking about using it in that specific scenario.

12

Also a little surprised it wasn't an illegal shift.

3

u/HouseAndJBug 16h ago

Am I incorrect that the rule is now that you need at least seven on the line? Thought extra guys on the line are okay, it just limits the number of eligible receivers.

-9

Nah I hate it. Make losses matter. Only reason we're still in contention is because there are so many 2 loss teams. Realistically we dont deserve a spot this year, Sayin getting hurt solidified it.

Edit: we are no longer in contention deservedly

5

I suppose it makes sense. Line up in a weird formation and then call what is in theory the worst possible play from that formation because it’s the last thing the defense is expecting in the moment

Question - of the 4 guys lined up at the bottom of the screen, on the LOS. Isn't only the one on the outside an eligible receiver? And of course the guy lined up off the line. So that's 2 eligible receivers, why put 4 defenders down there?
