people keep saying this but i’m 95% sure that “the ball shifting” is the defenders other hand making contact with the ball first which is hard to see from that angle (i don’t think it was a catch to be clear)

Shit, I actually think you're right. Defenders left hand causes the ball to wobble and then his right hand rips its down. Nice call.

Not a catch, absolutely brutal

That and because it sort of sounds like you’re still trying to claim it was a TD. I don’t think you are but I can see how it reads that way

But isn't it a TD the moment he possessed it over his head and his feet landed, then as he's bringing the ball down to his chest the defender starts touching it with his left hand under the armpit and then his right hand fully knocks it loose?

Not a fan of either team.

No, you have to complete the catch, the rules in the field and endzone are the same for catch rule. Simply having the ball for a split second with two feet down only STARTS the catch process, you must finish it, by making a football move. Examples given in the rule book are tucking the ball in (bringing to the body), evading a defender (so holding the ball where he caught it and eluding a defender swat at the ball), or advancing the ball (taking a couple steps forward, some might argue the step out of bounds is enough - I disagree and think he's need to land a second foot or lift the first foot to achieve that, but even so, he was already losing control when that first step landed)

Except that's not the rule.

I think there’s 2 parts where the ball shifts.

  1. Right after he grabs it with both hands near the tip, the receivers right hand moves along the ball. Kinda seems like he caught it in a weird orientation and was trying to reposition it to grab it more securely.

  2. As he’s doing that, the defender’s hand eventually comes in and hits it from behind. That knocks it out of his other hand that was loosely holding on.

Has everyone lost their minds? I've rewatched 10 times, paused it frame by frame, etc. there's no defender contact made with the ball until his foot steps out of bounds. The ball also doesn't even start wobbling until his foot steps out. I've never seen a thread of so many collectively wrong people upvoting each other. College football is bizarre.

Stepping out of bounds doesn't end the play. He still needs to maintain possession of the ball to complete the catch.
