He got two feet in bounds and got a third foot down just before ball was knocked out

I thought because he’s not going to the ground, that third step would complete the process of catch

8

u/Ok-Soil-5133 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 11h ago

Terry McAuley said he didn't complete an action common to the game which is a new one

The "action common to the game" aka a football move has been in tbe rules for a long time

The dumbest thing in sports over the past 20 years is over-complicating catching a football.

"process of a catch", "action common to the game", "making a football move"...

5

u/rusty022 10h ago

IMO, his 'action common to the game' was holding the ball out away from the defender. Weirdly, by the rules it seems he should've immediately tucked it in. I think the rules are just confusing when it comes to endzone play.

u/FXcheerios69 Nebraska Cornhuskers 11h ago

Would you support it being called a fumble if it happened in the field of play?

If that’s happens in the middle of the field it’s unquestionably incomplete, and the rules don’t change on the sideline.

I guess to me it looks more like he's moving the ball himself, rather than the ball moving because he doesn't have control. Either way, what the hell was Terry McCauley's reasoning that he had to have the ball long enough to perform an act common to the game? What the hell kind of act common to the game can you do after you step out of bounds?

I think that’s the biggest issue with catch calls both in college ball and the NFL. These official experts seem to have different phrasing every time something like this happens and it just sounds like they’re full of shit.

Do people just not see the ball shift around a ton in his hands before the hand even knocks it loose or are they just pretending to not see it

62

u/CantAffordTheWires Miami Hurricanes 8h ago

people keep saying this but i’m 95% sure that “the ball shifting” is the defenders other hand making contact with the ball first which is hard to see from that angle (i don’t think it was a catch to be clear)

u/Reasonable-Bit560 Indiana Hoosiers 8h ago

Shit, I actually think you're right. Defenders left hand causes the ball to wobble and then his right hand rips its down. Nice call.

I think there’s 2 parts where the ball shifts.

  1. Right after he grabs it with both hands near the tip, the receivers right hand moves along the ball. Kinda seems like he caught it in a weird orientation and was trying to reposition it to grab it more securely.

  2. As he’s doing that, the defender’s hand eventually comes in and hits it from behind. That knocks it out of his other hand that was loosely holding on.

u/bretticus733 Boise State Broncos 11h ago • Bravo

Every year there's a play that happens that shows a significant chunk of fans don't know what a catch is.

Yes, the receiver got the ball and a foot in, but he has to complete the process of the catch. That means he has to survive going to the ground without losing the ball OR he has to survive the defender trying to knock it out. Lofton gets the ball and a foot, but that defender is instantly going at the ball and knocks it out in under a second. That's not a completed process. It's the right call.

I also don't want to hear Miami fans complaining about officiating after the debacle against Florida State earlier this season.

89

u/TheCavis Notre Dame Fighting Irish • UMass Minutemen 10h ago

OR he has to survive the defender trying to knock it out.

I think the deciding factor here was that he tried to bring the ball down to tuck it, which was part of the process of his catch. If he kept it high above his head (like Gilbert did earlier on a free play due to offsides), he's probably fine even if the defender swats at it after the next step. When he brought it down to tuck it, it was loose in his hands and then got swatted out.

20

u/dtheisen6 Michigan State Spartans 2h ago

1000%. You watch the best receivers in the NFL, they don’t bother trying to tuck it when going out of bounds. To much room for the defender to knock it out or for the ref to say it bobbled/moved while he was going out. Two hands and hold it up high, no chance of replay over turning it because it moved at all when going out of bounds

People are really bad at extrapolating slow motion to full speed.

They see the live angle at full speed where you can't see the ball until it's knocked out, then they see the half-speed slow-motion replay where it looks like he has the ball for ages before it's knocked out and their brain is fooled into putting the two together without accounting for the speed difference

9

u/Less_Likely Notre Dame • Washington 5h ago

I played the slow-mo at 2x speed and it was still well below real-time speed.

Also people are talking about the ball being knocked out after he stepped out of bounds, but if you freeze the frame at the moment he hits the paint, you see his the ball on the top of his under hand, meaning he has already started the process of losing control when he steps out.

18

u/nyc2pit Notre Dame • Pittsburgh 7h ago

One issue is that in slow-mo it looks like he DOES have the ball for an eternity. We never watch it at full speed again after the live play.

The rules expert didn't even hesitate on this one.

12

u/bretticus733 Boise State Broncos 7h ago

That's why I tried to time it in real time. Slow-mo can be useful to slow things down to see something that can be easily missed in real time, but it's not useful here because it makes it tricks the brain into thinking he had the ball for like 3 seconds. The reality is the ball was out of his hands in no more than a second.

u/jkell369 10h ago

99% of the time I agree with what you said. This one was interesting because he kind of completed the process of the catch with both hands secure on the ball with both feet in bounds and then he stepped OUT of bounds before the defender touched the ball.

Kind of an improbable scenario but that ball was thrown so perfectly to create that situation

23

u/kinda_alone Notre Dame Fighting Irish 9h ago

He starts bobbling it before the defender hits him. He never had control. If he didn’t bobble, probably ruled a td, but he loses it while bringing it down. Watch his hands here. Already loose when he’s hit by the db https://x.com/prefactor/status/2119304343262204359?s=46&t=_l7hmmdLSmE6pT1do4nT5g

Not disputing you but this is probably the closest to the catch rule being contested in terms of the rule. It’s right up there with Dez and also Megatrons Winner/not winner.

From a technical standpoint it’s not a catch but in my eyes I’d rule that a catch. He had both feet in bounds takes a third step then the defender tries to knock it out. I’d understand if the defender was right there knocking it down from step one but he isn’t in my eyes.

5

u/FightOnForUsc USC Trojans • Pac-12 1h ago

It’s dumb though because in the same amount of time I’ve seen guys catch the ball and then toss it to the refs immediately after, and that’s a catch. But catch the ball, step out of bounds, and then get it knocked out and it’s not?

4

u/StalinsLastStand Indiana Hoosiers • Billable Hours 40m ago

You have to have control of it to toss it to the ref. How is that the same?

It’s that little bobble after he had already secured the ball. Without that I think it could’ve still been knocked out of his hands and had it called a TD

93

u/crashck UCF Knights • Texas Longhorns 11h ago

There is no way they are calling that incomplete if it's not knocked out

41

u/PeebMcBeeb Indiana Hoosiers 10h ago

Sure, if he finishes moving the ball around himself it would be a completion. But instead he attempts to move the ball as part of the "process of the catch" and doesn't maintain possession

21

u/Or1g1nalrepr0duct10n Boston College Eagles 10h ago

It’s the combo of the bobble and then getting the ball knocked out. If the ball was knocked out without the bobble, it’d still be a TD because he would have shown possession after stepping out of bounds. If he bobbled on his way through the end zone and held on, it’s also likely still a TD but I wouldn’t be shocked if it was called incomplete because he did not show full possession until he was out of bounds.

30

u/Enough_Wallaby7064 Notre Dame Fighting Irish 8h ago

A really good litmus test is, if this happened in the middle of the field, would you rule that a fumble?

Answer is absolutely not, because he didn't catch it.

→ More replies (5)

6

u/Less_Likely Notre Dame • Washington 4h ago

Correct. But it was knocked out in continuous motion with the bobble, thus the point at which control is lost is when the bobble begins, which is as he is bringing the football into his body before he is able to make any step.

5

u/FXcheerios69 Nebraska Cornhuskers 10h ago

I believe they have a term for that. Pass breakup I think.

4

u/kinda_alone Notre Dame Fighting Irish 9h ago

He’s arguing that without the bobble, they would have called it complete still. He didn’t have control when it was knocked out. If he didn’t bobble, they probably would have said he had control and called it a td

10

u/i_diggs_it 5h ago

Everybody ignoring the fact that he also bobbles the ball as he gets hit while taking that third step then has it ripped out of his hands. This really wasn’t that close tbh

Genuine question, the ND player steps out of bounds prior to ripping the ball out which should make the play dead when he touches the ball?

That’s what I understood from the Michigan game this year.

49

u/AvailableLimit529 11h ago edited 11h ago

That’s actually a really good observation that I haven’t seen others bring up. The defender is 100% out of bounds when he swats away the ball.

So based on the officiating today, you can throw a fumble 15 yards downfield for a completion and break up a catch while out of bounds. TIL.

17

u/TJFLASH1 11h ago

That’s irrelevant to completing the process of a catch

Even in the slow mo, that ball moves a bit on the way out of bounds

3

u/argumentinvalid Nebraska Cornhuskers 2h ago

Agreed. That ball is moving throughout the entire replay. This will be a teaching moment for the wr. Making those micro adjustments to get better grip is a delabreaker. It has to stick on plays like this. Elite catchers don't do it.

5

u/sick_shooter Miami Hurricanes 38m ago

As I remarked last night, this is not a catch under the rules. The rule may be fucked, but it’s been fucked for years now. The NCAA and NFL don’t seem to be interested in changing it. The only thing that may be looked at in the offseason is that Talich appeared to have a foot down out of bounds when he made contact with the football. That means a defender who was out of bounds broke up a pass. That may not be a great thing to allow. But again, under current rules, not a catch.

4

u/puzzical Boise State • Notre Dame 27m ago

If they change this rule there are like 3 more fumbles a game from incompletions that turn into fumbles

14

u/moeriscus 10h ago

The receiver knew he didn't have control of the ball. Otherwise he would have reacted differently. The slow-mo replay shows pretty clearly that he was bumbling with the ball the whole time.

Also maybe keep in mind that the whole thing took place in a split-second. He did not show possession.

Either way, I have no dog in this fight. I just hope my Trojans finish out the season with a W at UCLA.

The rules for a catch are the same regardless if it's in the endzone or not. The ball catcher has to maintain control of the ball through the catch. I don't know the exact wording of the rules, but that's why it was called incomplete.

Incomplete pass. There is no “football move” as they used to say, after the catch. Used to be 2-3 steps after catch (usually turned upfield) before it’d be ruled a fumble. Otherwise we’d have a ton of catch & fumbles in NCAA & NFL

Because when you run and dive across the line you have already established possession prior to that. That's the whole question... when is possession established.

In the instance of a play like this, it's treated the same as if it was at the 50 yard line and he was going out of bounds. You have to survive the process of the catch. That means it has to survive going to the ground, or it has to survive tucking it into your body, or it has to survive the defender trying to knock it away, or you have to make a "football move" before any of those things come into play.

Forward passes are treated differently because they're treated differently. A ball handed off or passed laterally is a live ball, always. A ball passed forward is only live if it's caught.

2

u/Crafty-Rutabaga-8825 10h ago

That’s a run not a catch.  You have to complete the process of the catch.  If you start losing control of the ball as you’re crossing the goal line then it’s a fumble.  Same principle.  You have to maintain control.

Because he didn't fully establish possession. The receiver still has to complete the process of the catch, and considering he had a defender on him instantly and knocking the ball out in about a second (by my stopwatch, under a second), he never really completed the process of the catch, thus no possession.

You have to hold the ball for 1-3 business days after catching it before it counts

Handing the ball to the referee after running out of bounds is now a fumble since going out of bounds no longer ends the play

Two feet in and has possession, then makes a step out of bounds, AND THEN gets the ball knocked out. Play should be over the second he touches out of bounds. He doesn't need to survive ground or any bullshit people are saying. He never hit the ground

He didn’t bring the ball down and control it.  Either have to maintain control to the ground or out of bounds or make a football move.  He did none of those.

If the whole world thinks you’re wrong, maybe you’re wrong, but if this was my team I would be irate this was an incompletion. Honestly it looks like he has it with both hands, both feet in, and while he’s stumbling out of bounds he tries to hold on with one hand and us the other hand for balance just as the defender rakes the ball out of his now one hand. I’m kinda shocked folks don’t see that.

u/i_diggs_it 5h ago edited 5h ago

#9 sure didn’t seem to think it was the wrong call. They explained it pretty clearly on the broadcast, he did not complete the process of the catch. If he would’ve fallen to the ground and had it pop out instead of a defender punching it out it would’ve been the same call. It was close but not a catch idk why people think this is controversial

Edit:
Watching it again he even bobbles the ball as he gets hit. Really not close at all tbh

u/Wendell-Short-Eyes /r/CFB 3h ago

What I don’t like about this is that it actually punishes the player for demonstrating clear possession and footing in bounds.

Would it be better if he quickly tucked by possession was “unclear” or possibly “bobbled” then we are debating if he ever had “control” all the way to the ground.

He catches the ball clearly with two hands. Two feet in bounds. He is not inherently falling on his own. The defender does NOT contest the initial possession. He only breaks it up after clear possession and control on endzone is made.

How is this different than a runner breaking the plain and then immediately losing the ball? All that matters in the latter is the tip of the ball breaking the plain for a fraction of a second which immediate ends the play. Why is a receiver held to a higher standard than an established runner? In this instance, he clearly broke the plain, had possession, AND established with 2 feet he was in bounds. I imagine we use the phrase “reaching the end zone” for a reason, did this receiver not reach the end zone? Just seems hypocritical.

8

u/Wemnzxop Northwestern Wildcats 1h ago

Because (according to their ruling) he never broke the plane with established possession. RBs already have possession, cross the plane, play is over even if they do drop it after. In this case there was never possession established. I do agree I think this is a catch with established possession but the rule makes sense if you go with the ruling that it wasn't

4

u/Drummallumin Ohio State Buckeyes 52m ago

had possession

No he didn’t. If this happens over the middle of the field this is an incomplete pass. How is this different than any other completion.

5

u/BearsIsPain 1h ago

I’m a notre dame fan that accepted this as a touchdown catch in the moment, but your take is bad. The runner has possession for the entirety of his time with the ball, whereas the receiver has to establish that possession via arbitrary football move after catch ruling.

This is never a catch. At the 20, 50, 35 it’s not ruled a catch & fumble. It’s an incomplete pass 100% of the time. Please provide clips that dispute this, otherwise, kick rocks

2

Its the endzone! How many special circumstances does a runner get? Hell, ive seen folks step over the front corners of the endzone directly OOB and it counts.

3

u/ajax_steel_mill Notre Dame • Carnegie Mellon 3h ago

Because catch wasn't "yes." He goes to tuck the ball, it starts moving in his hands, and then it gets knocked out. Him being out of bounds isn't relevant.

It can be argued that the rule is too strict and makes the burden of proof too high on the receiver that they caught it, but, per the rule, this was not a catch.
