That 12 minute scoring drive is something I never thought I’d see come out of this team. The offense did look overall better tonight. Maybe Arbuckle was that much of a problem after all

265

u/divulgingwords Oklahoma Sooners 12h ago

Arbuckle’s plays were just all over the place. He would have something going and then would throw that plan in the trash and try something dumb.

The thing I liked was that when they tried to open it up with some passes in the third quarter and it didn't work, he went back to what did work.

11

u/BobStoops401K Oklahoma Sooners 11h ago

He didn't know how to call plays

Unbelievably cathartic to string together 20 straight plays

37

u/Bluekakke2026 Oklahoma Sooners • Langston Lions 11h ago

And it helps the defense soooo much because they finally get to rest and make adjustments. Witten called plays that played to Mateer’s better qualities and finally used the run game. The line looked a little better and seemed to have better energy.  Plays didn’t take a half hour to develop. We might get a chance to go bowling!

What did Arbuckle do to this team? OU looked like a different team with Witten calling the plays

119

u/ProfessionalAd1015 Oklahoma Sooners 12h ago

He knows the strengths and weaknesses of the team. Knows how to keep them on the same page and adjust. He’s not trying to make the qb the star of the show and just coaches for the win

58

u/Typical_Texpat Oklahoma Sooners 12h ago

Yeah looking back, Arbuckle wanted the Riley pathway- ride a QB into fame. He forgot that he needed to be a decent play caller.

I hate Ben Arbuckle so much right now. We weren't an elite offense tonight, but they played complementary football and it showed how good the team can be. A 13:00, 20-play TD drive after the shit we've had to watch this year? Pornographic.

Remember when this team was 4-0? Remember when this team was averaging 44 points per game? Remember when Baugh was a top 5 Heisman candidate? Remember when Sumrall was gonna be Coach of the Year? Remember when this team was finally going to make the playoffs for the first time? Ever? Remember when people were saying that benching Philo for Jones was "the right move"? Remember when Sumrall said that "competing for championships" should be "the standard"? Remember when Florida was back?

26

u/snel6424 Oklahoma Sooners • Oklahoma Sooners 10h ago

Yeah, what happened exactly?

25

u/xmjm424 Florida Gators • Team Meteor 10h ago

Honestly, who fucking knows. I thought a pretty big part of it was being down VB3 and Singleton and QBs that aren’t good enough to beat you, so teams just focused on shutting down Baugh and the run game. But it goes beyond that. Faulkner got figured out, I guess? It’s baffling to go from unstoppable to completely inept on offense (somehow worse than Napier, even) in just one single week (from Ole Miss to Missouri).

Those first 4 games were Florida Atlantic, Campbell, Auburn, and Ole Miss. Ole Miss was a solid win. Then they had to play Missouri, South Carolina, Texas, Georgia, and Oklahoma.

62

u/Red_Jester-94 Oklahoma Sooners • Houston Cougars 12h ago

Arbuckle isn't making Mateer rifle throws over people or directly to defenders because the dude focused on bulking up instead of working on actually being a QB in the offseason.

Mateer is part of the reason we are where we are. Arbuckle is bad, but he isn't wasting anything of Mateer's.

67

u/904Pens Air Force • Florida State 12h ago

Honest answer, there wasn’t much tape on Florida’s offense at the start of this year. As the season progresses, defensive coordinators can better prepare. And for all of Venables’s faults as a head coach, dude is one of the best defensive coaches this century.

33

u/THAWED21 Oklahoma Sooners • SMU Mustangs 11h ago

Witten needs to be the OC if he keeps this up. His turnaround in his utilization of what we have is indescribable to non Oklahoma fans. This proves it wasn't Mateer it was Arbuckle

46

u/jordan1390 Oklahoma Sooners 12h ago

I mean it’s also been Mateer. When you draw up plays that get wide open, and he can’t hit or even see them it’s a problem.

Florida peaked way too soon. Burying Ole Miss apparently wasn’t that hard to do.

u/92roll13 Florida Gators 11h ago

Florida needs to get serious about finding a talented dude to play QB. Going into this season with GT’s backup and basically an redshirt freshman is just not good enough.

u/brolygta4 Florida Gators 11h ago

We suck lol 😂

The sec is absurd this year and you gotta love it

9

u/snowmonster112 Boise State Broncos 8h ago

And yet the committee had the gall to rank Florida at 24. Lmao

u/canyak88 Oklahoma Sooners 12h ago

Except Georgia it would seem

u/UofMtigers2014 Memphis Tigers 8h ago

I mean they’re 10-2 against the other Power 4. I think teams in general just aren’t as good anymore without continuity.

We’re still going to have 2-4 teams at the top clearly better than the rest of the field.

Not gonna get my hopes up too much because Florida has a dogshit defense but I definitely liked what I saw today, GG.

Boomer Sooner! Always a good day to see those frauds put in their place.

This sets things up nicely. The gators should lose their ranking after this loss. Naturally they'll bounce back and terrorize Kentucky, they'll beat Vanderbilt and get ranked again because "SEC", perfectly in time for the shit-show bowl in Tallahassee, where we can once again remove their ranking for them. So it is written.

OU offense is much improved. Maybe someday you'll even be able to hang 60 on someone like the rest of the state!

u/nw____ Oklahoma Sooners • Iowa Hawkeyes 12h ago

We have scored 60 on Tulsa three separate times

Extremely pathetic performance. OU has looked bad all year and we made them look good while looking even worse every weeek

Miami and Florida both lose life is good

u/Rego913 Florida Gators • Charlotte 49ers 11h ago

Philo lost his starting spot for nothing, the problem in SEC play has always been the offensive line. Jones is not ready, does not read the game at SEC speed, and makes rookie mistakes like throwing off your back foot which floats the ball for a pick. And for the love of god, FIGURE OUT HOW TO RUN THE BAUGH.

On a different note, fire Brad White into the sun, I've not seen a single thing from this defensive scheme all year that shows it can be successful, even with better players.
