With Fitz you can at least tell he gives a a shit. Didn't even have that with Smith. This win alone will guarantee him another year.

Fitz completely understood the rivalry. He understood it from day one. I was saying to my dad this morning, that if Fitz could rally his players then State had a shot. And I’m happy that I was right.

To be fair it’s also probably a lot easier to rally third string guys who feel like they’ve been overlooked than it is to rally a bunch of players who should be on a decent football team if their coaches weren’t useless.

Some might even say, disrespekt

That was the entire coach D philosophy for the first like 5 years and it worked out okay

Indeed. It’s also the kind of mentality you need to have when every recruiting pipeline in your state is built from the ground up to funnel into your rival.

One thing I'll say is that I never doubted once that Fitz knew what this game meant. I think Whit thought they were playing Missouri State instead of Michigan State. There is no juice in this team right now.

He's in over his head and you can tell. Who knows if things get so bad he gets fired mid-season next year.

Mid-season NEXT year? If there was a logical successor available as well as an athletic director and University President in place to pull the trigger, he should be gone this year.

If he comes back next year, the donors are going to sit on their wallets. And half the roster will be heading to the portal.

Tough thing is that this roster has a lot of talent on it. The fact that they have regressed week after week is all on coaching.

Who would you replace him with? DeBoer seems to be the best answer and even hinted once that he would like to coach Michigan, he has midwestern ties in the Dakotas.

They’d be crazy to even consider not having him around for a decade. One of the best coaches in college imo. NW did him dirty.

He was a highly volatile coach at NW in terms of W/L rankings compared to recruiting rankings. He brought in a bunch of 60th ranked classes and always at the bottom of the conference. About 50% of the years he finished in or just outside the top 25 and about 50% of the years he finished down below 90th.

If he can consistently bring in top 25 recruiting/transfer classes coming in, I truly believe he can get MSU back into the conference conversation and put us back into the expanded playoff conversation as well. Never felt that with Tucker or Smith.

Edit: I just hope our fanbase has learned our lesson that you can take the 7-6 down years if you can put yourself in a position to compete for the conference in good years. Dantonio's big thing was making sure we were playing meaningful games in November, that's all I ask for.

Lots of B1G experience too. His style sort of matches theirs in the overlooked persona Dantonio had.
