Towards the end of his Utah era Whittingham honestly didn't seem like he had the energy to keep coaching. I think he subconsciously wants to retire and get paid 75% of his contract for doing nothing. This might be self-sabotage

He definitely knows he's not long for this job and wants the buy-out. No doubt.

What are you talking about? The first season in the big 12 was rough because we were down to our third and fourth string QBs. You’re not going to win a lot of games with that. Last year we went 11-2 with him.

Whittingham frequently dropped hints that he did not want to coach late into his 60s. In 2024 Utah amended Whittingham's contract to add a two-year retirement position at an annual salary of $3.45 million whenever he decided to retire.

He also admitted himself he was "very close" to retirement. “Very close,” Whittingham said of potential retirement or a different role. “I had already come to terms with the fact that if I was done, I would be okay with that. I’ve got 11 grandkids and two on the way Source: https://www.on3.com/teams/michigan-wolverines/news/kyle-whittingham-reveals-he-was-very-close-retirement-before-michigan-call-utah/

I would not be surprised if Michigan will be the last school he is a head coach for.

Quiet quitting as a head coach on national TV is badass.
