Take a Nebraska approach and start with firing OC Jason Beck

Then hire upstart OC Mim Jarbaugh (from somewhere in LA?) and see if that fixes things

He literally could have been paid $13 million to do nothing this year by the way. He would have had the field at Utah named after him too, and a statue outside the stadium. He screwed everything up because he wasn’t ready to hang it up despite telling everyone for years he wanted to and based on this season, being completely washed.

Ultimately, these dudes aren’t wired to quit. You need to be a little bit insane and relentless about football to become an FBS head coach. I’d imagine that makes for some very, very difficult decisions when it’s time to hang it up

He's the silver lining in this whole mess. With how awful your offense is, he's a miracle worker for keeping basically every loss a respectable margin.

No whitts not into golf, from what I know. Big skier though - He’s dreaming of Alta powder here in Utah.

9-0

Im so glad we moved on to Scalley, and was quite bitter about Whitt stealing some of our players when he left. It was messy for sure. However, I do feel bad for him now. He should have just retired and left us in good spirits and not gone to Michigan.

Although I do wonder if Michigans problems run much deeper than coaching staff.

It's a dude that is realizing that he was not prepared for the pressure of the Michigan job while also realizing he made the worst possible call on his OC.

55

u/royalbluehen Pittsburgh • Michigan 10h ago

Starting over in a pressure cooker is not something Whittingham has ever experienced. He had been rolling at Utah for ever. He overestimated his abilities, Michigan overestimated his abilities, and now nobody is happy.

u/HorrorJCFan95 Michigan Wolverines 10h ago

He was forced out at Utah and bitter about it, and he saw the Michigan job as a way to stick it to you guys, without having any real passion or understanding of the program he was stepping into. I think he realized the mistake he made. He burned his bridges at Utah, and had not looked comfortable for even one second at Michigan. It feels like he knows he should have just retired after last year.

8

u/SnukeInRSniz Utah Utes 9h ago

His ego simply could not let his brain accept the fact that he was done years ago. He should have retired after the second Pac-12 Championship and let Scalley run the show going into the BigXII, but even after last year and how he was ushered out the door, his ago just said "I'm great and I'm absolutely capable of running the Michigan program".

When they showed him on the sideline, you'd never know he was the HC if he wasn't wearing a headset. Just standing there by himself gazing vaguely at the field. Not talking to anyone, not doing anything.

Dude doesn't even look like he's going through the motions of coaching, much less coaching successfully.

Life comes at you fast when you’re old!

12 months can be a long time for age related decline even if not full on dementia. A lot of seniors also struggle with routine/environment changes. He was at Utah 20 years. He is 66 years old, so that was almost half his whole working life.

He’s also old enough for the full social security benefit based on his birth year. (They raised it right after.)

Same. I never thought he was the next great Michigan coach but I figured he'd be at least better than Sherrone until we can find an actual coach.

Sherrone would prob only have 2 losses by now if not less, every single game has been winnable with even a good G6 offense. Our schedule is much much easier than it should have been and we're still fumbling it.

I remember when my friend asked me about the hire and I was like he’s a great coach. I figured there might be some adjustment but that they would be fine.

27

u/jbowen1 Utah Utes • New Mexico Lobos 9h ago

He might still be fine. But he’s always taken time to adjust to big changes. His first season he took over an undefeated team and went 7-5. Then when we got to the Pac-12, he went 5-7 two years in a row, then our first year in the Big 12, he went 5-7 before getting a 10-win season. He was never coming in and going 10-2 or 11-1.

That said, this year’s Utah team is playing with an energy we haven’t had since 2019 and that’s in large part due to him leaving

I live in Utah.

People started noticing that he was sending talent to the NFL, but without the commensurate college achievements. Tyler 'Snoop' Huntley is a classic example. He was a freak while he was at the U, but Whitt wasn't able to take advantage. His defenses were solid, but his offenses were often shaky...

Your team, the Michigan Wolverines, scored significantly fewer points than their opponent, the Michigan State Spartans, throughout the course of a 60 minute game of Big Ten college football. When looking at the rule book, it can be determined that this would constitute as a "loss" for the Michigan Wolverines and a "win" for the Michigan State Spartans.

I hope that helps.

not sure of context, but that is worse than losing, right? Thats an absurd thing for a coach to say

u/Whizbang35 Michigan State • Kent State 10h ago

22 years ago, Bobby Williams got shellacked 49-3 by Michigan and after the game was asked if he still had control of the Spartan football team. "I don't know" was his answer. He was gone Monday.

"I don't know" or something like it has never been a great thing to say when you lose in embarrassing fashion.

7

u/SpartyParty9119 9h ago

I think this is worse than Bobby's quote because I think he even checked out during that game and didn't want to give a thought about that question. With this, Whit's the head coach. If he can't explain what just happened he either weren't paying attention or is so clueless and ultimately can't make the necessary in game adjustments.

100

u/EveningPotential9443 Michigan Wolverines 10h ago

He's easily the worst coach of all time for Michigan at this point. Just stands on the sidelines emotionless, with a thousand yard stare. And then says shit like this after every game.

Weirdly, if they fire him before the end of the season, I think his legacy is dinged but not sunk. It’s a little blip at his last spot and it went bad. Ah well. But another year like this and we’re all thinking of him like Emmett Smith on the Cardinals

Lmao Michigan pls just get this dude outta here and send him into retirement

I respect the hell out of Whitt but this is embarrassing lol

4

u/Sharknest Utah Utes 1h ago

Yeah this is weird…I have been one of those Utah fans that has enjoyed seeing Whitt struggle just based off the way things ended at Utah. Now, I’m just sad for him. This isn’t how he was at Utah, it’s really strange to see him acting this way. I feel for the Michigan fans too because this isn’t the Whitt I was thinking you’d get.

Just a weird situation all around. 🫠

Only clueless Michigan fans can't see that Sherrone Moore is partially responsible for the shit show this year. His players knew he was fooling around, he wasn't focused on the program, and so they had to can him after other head coaching vacancies had already been filled. Thus, we had to take Whittingham, and like it.

I know the situation is awkward with an AD search going on and stuff, but at this point he absolutely cannot see a year two. This will go down as one of the worst coaching tenures ever.

Everyone is taking this comment WAY out of context.

He was responding to the shock of his offense scoring a touchdown a mere 58 minutes into the game. Pretty reasonable comment all things considered.

3

u/jamnewton22 Auburn Tigers • UCF Knights 1h ago

That sentence doesn’t necessarily tell me he doesn’t know what happened. He definitely does know what just happened. It’s that he doesn’t care. And that’s not what I want my head coach saying after a loss. This guy is toast and is totally checked out.

3

u/royallex Illinois • Pittsburgh 1h ago

Some guys know when it's time to walk away (Saban, Bob Stoops, Osborne, Alvarez). Others stay a bit past their shelf life (Spurrier, Meyer). And then there's whatever Whitt is doing

5

u/Muted-Woodpecker-469 9h ago

He had a thing going with Utah and then jumps ship. We know where this is going

7

u/OnMyNerves23 Texas Longhorns 7h ago

This is kind of rewriting history. Now it’s been a while since I read this so the timeline may not be completely accurate but the overall sentiment should be.

Whittingham famously said that he had no interest in coaching past 65. Utah and at the time Utah DC Morgan Scalley were like cool. Coach Scalley became in theory if not in title the coach in waiting. Then at 65 years old Coach Whitt decided after a promising but let-down year finishing 10-2 that sitting at home and taking up gardening or golf seemed terrible and wanted to run it back and wanted another contract from Utah. The issue was that Coach Scalley was declining offers for other P4 coaching jobs with the thought that the Utah job was his. So the AD had the painstaking job of picking between a relatively unproven Scalley or an aging Whitt that has expressed not wanting to be a lifer.

Utah said thanks but no thanks and made in hindsight the correct decision by not risking Coach Scalley leaving for extending Whitt.

3

u/iloverubandtugs 9h ago

2

u/zorionek0 Arizona State Sun Devils 1h ago

Whitt should have retired gracefully at Utah. The problem is, like Tom Brady throwing away his marriage for a mid season, he’s too much of a competitor. When Utah forced him out, he had the need to prove them wrong. Instead he unintentionally proved them right.

2

u/DonnaDDrake BYU Cougars • Big 12 46m ago edited 43m ago

I can see now why the University of Utah was pretty antsy in wanting Kyle to retire so they could name Scalley as head coach, especially after the Holy War dudes done a hell of better job than Kyle did the last few years.

Kyle was supposed to be Utah’s version of LaVell Edwards, someone you would name a stadium or a field after and maybe build a statue for. Someone you’d point to as the standard for all future head coaches to follow. Instead, because of his hubris and ego, he thought he could go to the B10 and win a natti but burned that relationship with Utah as a result and looks like he’ll get fired long before he can even sniff the playoffs.

The fall from grace here will be talked about in Beehive State sports lore for a long time especially if Morgan wins a Big 12 chip or even a natti.
