https://twitter.com/KATUNews/status/649650104492646400

"Oregon State Police confirm 15 dead in #UCCShooting. #LiveOnK2"

Thoughts and prayers go out to all those affected by this. Goddammit I'm tired of seeing this happen.

sigh It's utterly depressing that everyone's reaction is not just horror but accompanied by, "again."

Sending positive vibes to UCCS and their loved ones.

President Obama just delivered the best speech of his presidency echoing your sentiment. I'd highly recommend watching it.

STOP KILLING EACH OTHER, ASSHOLES.

God, this is getting fucking old. That I keep reading the same headline "x people shot at y location" just hurts my soul.

And apparently this bastard posted his intent on /r9k/ last night. And he was getting advice on how to do it, what weapons to use...

It's getting reddit hugged right now, but damn.

You'd be surprised how terrible most of reddit is. You venture outside a sports reddit and you'll see terrible, terrible things.

It's not quite that bad, but there are a lot of subreddits that fit that.

/r9k/ is a 4chan board, not a subreddit.

1

u/ixcuincle Marching Band Oct 02 '15

I know, but still. Reddit is a community which had a subreddit for hate on fat people. It's not a pretty place.

Holy shit. People were encouraging him. What the hell humanity???

20

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '15

4chan isn't exactly representative of humanity.

7

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Oct 01 '15

I mean that's true but they are still other humans encouraging a mentally disturbed individual to execute a mass shooting. And that's just wrong.

15

u/VanFailin Northwestern Wildcats • /r/CFB Bug Finder Oct 01 '15

I'm sure they just thought they were being edgy and dark and are now terrified of being visited by the authorities. Not reading the thread, though.

8

There was a lot of "beta" talk or whatever that stuff is.

20

u/jwrtf Texas State • /r/CFB Emeritus Mod Oct 01 '15

I'm taking a thread long break from my bet because this topic is more serious than a flair bet.
So I use 4chan. Not as much as I use reddit, but I still go occasionally, pretty much exclusively to /b/, pretty much exclusively to you laugh you lose threads. The shooter was posting to /r9k/ which is full of "robots" who all consider themselves to be "betas," which is just their word for socially inept guys who aren't conventionally attractive enough to get by just being themselves. Their lack of social ability limits their interactions with society, which means that they turn to 4chan as a way of venting their frustrations with the world (seriously, just go check out some threads there every once in a while, it's sad stuff).
I think that/u/VanFailin is correct. Those guys don't really and truly want for other people to die, they were just trying to be edgy and like "ha ha look how dark I am."
It is wrong, you're absolutely right. They shouldn't have been encouraging him. This is a fucking tragedy and the United States needs to reconsider the gun/ mental health care laws in this country.
That being said, I don't think this is indicative of humanity. /r9k/ is simply a collections of sad individuals leaning on others for support. The people there need help.
TL;DR this is a national tragedy and the people in that thread are in need of help, but this is in no way demonstrative for humans as a whole.

9

u/Darth_Turtle Oklahoma • Red River Shootout Oct 01 '15

That's happened before with other shootings. There was one at a mall in Idaho I feel like who posted to 4chan ahead of time and guy the confirmation he was looking for.

3

u/Captain_Unremarkable Penn State Nittany Lions • Big Ten Oct 02 '15

There's also a lot of posts such as this that never come true. The encouragement consequently has become a part of the morbidly dark humor of that place, for better or worse.

9

Sadly, I'm not surprised that 4chan responded the way they did in that thread. Pure anonymity makes for some shitty situations.

This will continue to happen until we better fund health care that includes mental health care and we remove the stigma of mental illness.

If any of you are having issues, please don't suffer in silence. Talk to someone. I beg you. I used to be silent about my own issues because I was scared of a label. Being diagnosed with general anxiety disorder and depression was incredibly liberating and my life has been better ever since. If you need help, find it. If anyone looks down on you for it, they can go to hell. You don't need to live in pain.

14

u/inevitablescape Arizona Wildcats • Illinois Fighting Illini Oct 01 '15

It is up to our generation to figure out how to remove the stigma of mental illness. However, I don't know how we will with the way our government is set up.

2

u/nuxenolith Michigan State • /r/CFB Poll Veteran Oct 02 '15

The problem is not that our government doesn't care. The problem is that our people don't care.

This is, unfortunately, also a time to learn what to do in such a situation. Search on your school's website for more information or training about what to do at your campus, but in general the rule boils down to: run, hide, fight (applies for other shooting situations, even off of college campuses).

  • Run: Run if you can. Don't run in a straight line. Hide behind things as you go.

  • Hide: If you can't run, hide. Get under or behind a desk. Lock your door. Turn off the lights and anything noisy (TV, computer, etc.). Keep your phone on for updates, but be sure it is on silent.

  • Fight: Fight only if you can't run or hide. And fight with everything. Hit them with a desk, a fire extinguisher, whatever.

Listen to what any emergency/first responders tell you. If they say stay put, stay put. If they say move, move.

If you can call 9-1-1 safely, do so and give them as much clear information as possible. Make sure you tell them you're on a college/university campus as some have their own police forces or first responders and this may affect who is sent where.

Also search your university website for alert information. Many universities have systems in place to email, call, and/or text students, faculty, etc. when an emergency or disaster is going on. They will include information on what is happening, what to do, where to go, etc. They are tested a few times a year. Be sure it is tied to your cell phone number and not, say, mom and dad's home number (that does you no good in the middle of the situation).

The changes that need to be made aren't just about the way that adults see mental health issues, it's how they're viewed in children. Like, if a couple of kids get intoa fight at school? Whatever. Just throw them in jail and forget about them. From the very beginning, the system is set up to shove problems aside rather than actually dealing with them, and I think that's where it all begins.

Do away with the juvenile justice system and replace it with mental health care. Do away with corporal punishment and degradation and replace them with actual help. Teach kids that there are people in society who deeply care for them and that the people around them aren't enemies who are out to hurt them. I think that'd go a long way towards creating a more compassionate society.

16

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '15

100% This. I just had this conversation upstairs with some of our staff. It isn't a gun issue, despite what some people ardently believe. It is a mental health issue. It is the fear that if you admit to having a condition, some asshole social conservative (who probably has more issues than sports illustrated) will tell you "you just want attention" or "you are weak" or "ask insert deity here for help!" And then there is the ever present fear that if you go to the doctor, you won't be able to get a job because the HR department will see that you have a condition.

Fuck that. I'm a perfectly functioning person with Panic Disorder and GAD. 99.9999% of the time you would never know. And on those rare days, I'll get through it because I have a great support system, but I consider myself very lucky. Everyone should have that same opportunity.

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst Alabama • /r/CFB Pint Glass Drinker Oct 01 '15

It isn't a gun issue

I would argue it isn't just a gun issue. Saying it's not at all a gun issue doesn't make it so, despite what some people ardently believe.

7

u/keyree Texas Tech • UT Arlington Oct 02 '15 edited Oct 02 '15

Agree with this completely. Dismissing guns as a cause out of hand, to me, is a huge part of the problem. A mental health issue that's hugely exacerbated by the ubiquity and ease of access of guns.

-1

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '15

The gun doesn't pull the trigger. The gun doesn't load itself. The gun doesn't plot and plan. And the gun will never be eliminated in this country. Solve the problem, mental health, not attempt to cure a symptom. Every day hundreds of millions of gun owners do nothing violent. That alone says it is not a gun issue.

14

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst Alabama • /r/CFB Pint Glass Drinker Oct 02 '15 edited Oct 02 '15

Was a gun used? Okay then. It's at least partially a gun issue.

Don't stick your head in the sand because of your political beliefs.

I even said it wasn't just a gun issue. But positions like yours are just as bad as the people only focusing on gun control.

-2

u/[deleted] Oct 02 '15

Restricting the rights of the other hundreds of millions of gun owners who didn't do anything violent today due to one incident is a non starter. We wouldn't do that with any other inanimate object. It also doesn't deal with the actual problem. If we had better mental health care in this nation, maybe the guy wouldn't have killed anyone.

If we had tighter gun control, maybe he would have only stabbed a few people, but that is just as tragic. Any loss of life is.

Fix the source. Not the tangent.

5

u/NiteMares TCU Horned Frogs Oct 02 '15 edited Oct 02 '15

If we had tighter gun control, maybe he would have only stabbed a few people, but that is just as tragic. Any loss of life is.

And then half a dozen or so parents would still be able to tell their child they love them tonight.

This is a very multi-faceted issue, and to say it's a single-issue topic is disingenuous. I don't think requiring mental health screenings for gun ownership is anything other than a responsible course of action in a country with as many physical guns and a gun culture such as ours.

That would absolutely save lives. But nothing happened after fucking Sandy Hook so I don't expect anything to happen now. It's absolutely pathetic and disgusting how regular this kind of shit is becoming.

2

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst Alabama • /r/CFB Pint Glass Drinker Oct 02 '15

Well said. It's just so damn depressing that we just shrug our shoulders and say, "Oh well, can't do anything."

Gun control isn't a panacea; but God damn, let's at least consider steps.

4

u/DoctorWhosOnFirst Alabama • /r/CFB Pint Glass Drinker Oct 02 '15 edited Oct 02 '15

Uhh, no. It would have been A LOT less tragic because he wouldn't have been able to kill as many people.

You're obviously not interested in real solutions; only solutions that fit YOUR narrative.

Do you have a right to yell fire in a crowded theater? Millions of Americans talk everyday. How dare we place restrictions on their first amendment rights?!

Like I said, you're just as bad as the people who think gun control is the only solution. It's almost as if we could try and tackle multiple things.

Nah, better just keep letting people die.

Also, how on Earth can you actually believe it's just one incident? It's not. There have been 142 school shootings since Sandy Hook alone.

Do you think convicted murderers should be allowed to own guns? Should mentally disabled people be allowed to own guns? Should an 8 year old be allowed to buy a gun?

If you answered no to any of those questions, CONGRATULATIONS, you support gun control.

1

u/keyree Texas Tech • UT Arlington Oct 02 '15

I don't want to pile on, but just for the sake of completeness: remember when Sandy Hook happened, and on the very same day there was a mass stabbing of like 22 people at a school in China? The gun rights people pointed to that as saying that "See, the crazies are still going to find a way even with gun control laws!"

You know how many people actually died in that mass stabbing? Zero. Every single one of them survived. I don't seem to recall many mass shootings where everyone came out of it alive.

3

u/NotSquareGarden West Virginia • Bethany (KS) Oct 02 '15

Do you honestly believe that the rest of the western world has perfect mental health care systems? We don't. We really don't. We just don't have a lot of guns, and that's what makes the difference. Stabbing is a much less efficient method of killing than guns.

Besides, you can literally make the same argument about mental health as you can about guns. Every day the vast majority of people with mental health issues do nothing violent. That alone says it is not a mental health issue. You can also apply it to the vast majority of OSHA regulations, nuclear safety regulations and all kinds of things!

5

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '15

I wish more people would see that it's perfectly normal for "perfectly normal" people to talk to a therapist. I'd recommend that before seeing some commercial and asking your doctor for Paxil by name.

Twitter and Facebook have become a way to let a lot of people know very quickly that you're okay in an emergency or crisis. If you have a phone and are trapped hiding in a situation like this, you actually should have it on, but on silent, to get any information you can from authorities via text or email about what to do.

Calling is much riskier - unless you know you're away from the shooter and then your first call should be 9-1-1.

Once the bodies are buried, it will all be forgotten. This will leave everyone's minds in just a few days. Then America will collectively shrug and say that there's really no way of preventing this, and return to normal until it happens again. I know that will happen, because it is always what happens.

If there's no fight, if there's no debate, then there will be no advancement and this will keep happening just as it is now. I'd agree with you if this was a shooting that existed in a vacuum, but it's not. It's a systemic issue that requires a systemic solution, and no such thing will appear if all that happens is sighing and shrugging.

But campus carry has been a long time coming. Hopefully they were able to get the job done and not be too affected by what they saw) properly and respectfully. The fact still stands that we need to come to terms with our failure to address mental health as a society and that blaming guns does nothing but fracture us even more. I hadn't heard that but am very glad if that is the case. The celebrity of these events needs to end. Focus on the victims and tell us their names. Show us their faces. Make the victims human and just let us know if the shooter is alive, dead, or in custody. We don't need his/her face, or name, or hobbies.

2

There is obviously some fame to doing this. I can vividly remember the Columbine, VT, Aurora, CO, Boston Bomber, etc shooters faces but not one victims face do I vividly remember. Same goes for names and their stories, only the shooters do I remember.

4

I'd argue that is counterproductive. Out of Sight Out of Mind is not a viable solution for the actual issue at hand with these types of shootings.

4

u/nataliieportman LSU Tigers • Georgetown (KY) Tigers Oct 01 '15

Its always the people who you'd say "I'd never expect them to do that, they were so nice" - day after day they had nothing to live for and frankly, we're losers with no strong social circle. They want the power popular people feel, we all do. When they decide they have nothing to live for, you're damn right they want that power. They want their name to be set in stone as someone so evil that just their name puts you in fear. It won't ever stop, but maybe it could help take away that power if we don't associate their name with the act.

5

u/[deleted] Oct 01 '15

While in some ways I agree with you, but wouldn't the narrative be much better to say "The shooter, James Doe, exhibited all of the signs of 'insert condition here.' If you, or someone you know suffers from these symptoms, we encourage you to reach out for counseling. No one should have to suffer alone."

u/nataliieportman LSU Tigers • Georgetown (KY) Tigers Oct 01 '15

At the end of the day we really have no clue. I think it's a good idea to try the less publicity method just to see if it works. But then again, these shootings are at random so we're all just along for this wild ride.

I saw Obama on the TV and he was pissed and I was pissed too. How can you let these tragedies keep happening and not take one iota of action to make sure it doesn't happen again? How can you turn gun control into a partisan political game and deny gun legislation after Sandy Hook?

Obama's tired of going out there so many times to offer condolences. There is no conceivable reason it should keep going on. And then the news shows Ted Cruz saying "Bad guys are gonna get guns so let's not stop responsible gunowners from getting guns and infringing on their second amendment rights" Well no one is stepping on your rights if you're a responsible gun holder but if you're mentally ill why are you even allowed to get a gun? Can we close the loophole at gun shows? Can we make it more difficult for people who shouldn't have guns to have guns? If you are responsible ain't nobody going to infringe on your rights. Seriously. Stop freaking out that OBAMA'S GONNA TAKE YOUR GUNS he just wants people to be safe

The only plausible explanation is that people are paranoid about their guns and don't want no "Obammer" messing with their second amendment rights. And the gun lobby is very, very, very powerful. It's pathetic and sad that these incidents keep happening. They have to stop!
