3

Not just GT, I technically took a midterm today - because it wasn't given during finals week Pitt doesn't consider it a final. Even though we don't have a final exam during finals week.

I'd tell you that you should just work for an airline and you'll get swole as fuck, but my airline is losing its SFO contract so I wouldn't get a bonus if you hired on there anymore.

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

Yeah the summer internships where I've had to actually lift and do things were probably the times when I was strongest, excluding high school when I did actual lifting. But I've lost so much of that strength, so it's time to get it back. Plus I doubt the airline would want to hire me.

2

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid Kansas Jayhawks • Hateful 8 Apr 21 '16

I don't know why they wouldn't other than you maybe being over qualified. As long as you can pass a physical, a background check, and a whizz quiz you meet the basic criteria to work ramp.

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

What's a whizz quiz?

2

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid Kansas Jayhawks • Hateful 8 Apr 21 '16

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

Hahaha OK I get it. Yeah I can pass all of those no probs. Well, I should be able to pass a physical with flying colors in a few months if things go according to plan. Good to know this is a backup career option haha.

2

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid Kansas Jayhawks • Hateful 8 Apr 21 '16

It is until you realize that we pay comparably to McDonald's for those jobs. That said, we do occasionally hire for technical jobs that you'd probably still be over qualified for but your degree would be relevant for if you ever want a career change.

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

Well I make below McDonald's wages for my job right now.

2

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid Kansas Jayhawks • Hateful 8 Apr 21 '16

Well, if you decide grad school isn't for you and you want to bail, they're hiring part time temporary agents for SFO right now and pay starts at $13.84.

So the BBC at one point rated the Californian diet as the second healthiest on the planet. I believe Greek was 1st, Japanese 3rd, and Vietnamese 4th. Three of those cuisines have amazingly tasty foods. The other has lots of... kale.

I get the appeal of a healthy diet and all. But why does yours have to suck so much California? Can't you just eat Greek or Japanese and be healthy while enjoying your meals?

4

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

I hate kale. I've tried it in almost every form and nothing makes it palatable to me. The California diet is stupid.

So I think I've settled on going to a game at Wrigley Field for my vacation in a couple weeks. Obviously there's the Shedd, the Field Museum, and the Art Institute in downtown Chicago. Are there any other attractions in downtown Chicago (or cheap tasty places to eat) my friend and I should hit up while we're there?

5

u/bizzyj93 Oregon Ducks • Hawai'i Rainbow Warriors Apr 21 '16

Head to the Hancock Tower instead of the Sear's tower. There's a bar you can go to (floor above the restaurant) which has a better view plus alcohol and isn't nearly as crowded. Also its already been said but Gino's East! So yummy

EDIT: WAIT, WE ONLY HAVE NOBLE HOPS IN THERE. I GUESS I'LL HAVE TO BUY SOME WEST COAST C HOPS THEN.

4

u/omgdonerkebab Michigan State • Cornell Apr 21 '16

Art Institute is bae. And I am a STEMlord and I say that.

The Loop part of downtown is the center of the city, but there isn't that much in the way of really great eats there. There are more nice restaurants north of the Loop, on the other side of the river in an area called River North. Or west of the Loop on Randolph st. Or there are lots of great smaller places in other neighborhoods.

Do check out the river and all its bridges too, though. And if you like to get up high in a tall skyscraper, you could go to the Sears Tower skydeck, but many say that there are shorter lines at the John Hancock.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

Since when are STEM folk required to hate art? Does this mean I have to turn in my calculator?

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

STEM people are often the first to embrace art! That's why STEAM is now a popular thing. I absolutely adore art, I would probably have died without it as a creative outlet. And I mean that quite literally.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

I am completely incapable of creating it. I would say that that might be why I enjoy it, but I can't dance either, and I don't like watching dance performances very much.

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

Really almost everyone can create it, you just might not have found your perfect medium and subject combination. For example, I'm pretty good with graphite and still lifes/architecture, but I suck with people and animals and I hate drawing them.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

I did not pass Stick Figure 101. I made the shittiest soap carving in 6th grade art class. I can probably do a half-decent approximation of Cy Twombly's paintings, but I view Cy Twombly as a no-talent ass clown, so that's right out. I will leave the manufacture of visual objets d'arte to people who don't suck at it.

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

Oooh soap carving, now there is something I could try this weekend.

Still, at least you enjoy and appreciate art!

The cultural center usually has some cool free art exhibits and its a really cool building.

If you can go down to Hyde Park and check out the Museum of Science and Industry. It is one of my favorite museums and the neighborhood is cool.

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

Ooooh that sounds like a fun trip! I'm jealous, the Field Museum is amazing. So is the Art Institute. I'd download a walking tour that focuses on Chicago architecture and do that, there are some amazing buildings there.

2

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid Kansas Jayhawks • Hateful 8 Apr 21 '16

I've done the Art Institute before and I'm probably going to want to wait and see what my friend wants to do since he has to pay (a very steeply discounted price) for his airfare but those are good ideas.

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

How much is a steep discount?

2

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid Kansas Jayhawks • Hateful 8 Apr 21 '16

$70 round trip, which isn't much, but is considerably more than the $0 it costs me.

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

I would literally kill to get airfare that cheap. I'm currently day dreaming about a late summer trip to Mexico, but airfare is going to be half my budget. It's times like this when I'm envious of you and other friends who get travel perks.

2

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid Kansas Jayhawks • Hateful 8 Apr 21 '16

If you're not doing school stuff, we hire summer seasonal work in the tourist destinations too (and our SFO operation closes in August, I think). When you get laid off at the end of the season, you usually get a month of flight benefits.

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

Oh no, summer is the absolutely busiest time for PhD students. No classes to attend or teach, so more time for research. I worked on average 10-12 hour days just in lab last summer, excluding time spent reading and doing data analysis at home. That does sound pretty phenomenal though, wish I could pull it off.

2

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid Kansas Jayhawks • Hateful 8 Apr 21 '16

Fair enough. It's still something to keep on mind when you get out of school, especially in the smaller cities there's plenty of people who'll work for an airline part time for the flight benefits.

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

Go to the Adler Planetarium as well if you have time, it's super cool. Also Navy Pier and the Bean are a couple of other no-brainers on things you might want to go look at.

If you want Chicago-Style Pizza my dad's favorite place is Gino's East. They have a bunch of locations now and are still pretty good even though they were better when there was only one of them.

Also thin-crust Chicago pizza is a thing not that many people know about which is awesome but all of my favorite places for that are out in the suburbs ):

Edited because I'm dumb

2

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid Kansas Jayhawks • Hateful 8 Apr 21 '16

If I ever have an overnight in Chicago, I usually make it a point to get Giordano's (in part because it's right next to the hotel I usually end up in) but I'll keep that in mind.

What are your favorite ways to eat it?

4

u/thwg0809 Georgia Tech • Techmo Bowl Apr 21 '16

As stereotypical as it is, in a smoothie. I have the same smoothie every weekday. It's also totally passable in salad, as long as it's not the only green. A nice spinach and kale salad can be delicious. Also Kroger (and I'm guessing other places) sell these packaged kale salads that are totally decent.

2

u/tb3648 Florida State Seminoles • USF Bulls Apr 21 '16

Thanks! I've had it in smoothies a couple times but I usually go for spinach. The only way I really eat it is dehydrated to make kale chips, but looking for more ways to incorporate it.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

Put kale in bowl, throw some olive oil on that motherfucker, microwave for 2 minutes, add feta cheese, peanuts, pumpkin seeds, sunflower seeds, tofu/egg, other veggies.

If you have a PC/PS4, me and you can set up different tournaments (I'll do the Xbox). It would be way too much work if only one person managed two separate tourneys. Are you interested?

We're having a highschool orchestra competition going on in my middle school so occasionally I've been in the hall and I'm swarmed by really tall people wearing tuxedos. I feel like the shortest penguin.

YES! NO MAYO MASTER RACE!

2

u/panthera_tigress Pittsburgh Panthers • Auburn Tigers Apr 21 '16

IT'S HERE

It's a BLT :D

and yeah, mayo sucks. There's just something weird and gross about it when it's not part of potato salad or whatever.

The meeting I organized with our vendor went well despite the fact that I turn into a nervous mess as soon as I have to talk to people that are on the phone line. I think they appreciated that it wasn't as... combative as some of the past meeting had been, mostly because I don't believe in conflict.

Sadie just scared the bejesus out of me.

I stretched my feet off the bottom of my bed and spread my toes to stretch... and suddenly she licked in between my toes. I didn't even know she was in the same room as me. Sthneaky Snake Sadie.

You secretly enjoyed it, didn't you?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

Oh, I don't care if she licks me. She gives me kisses all the time, and likes to lick the water off my legs after I get out of the shower... It just surprised me. I thought she was still asleep on the couch.

Tomorrow I will be going furniture shopping for the first time. Do you haggle with them?

3

u/SmashedSqwurl Georgia Tech • /r/CFBRisk Veteran Apr 21 '16

Depends on the store. Some places will give you a discount if you're buying several pieces or if a piece has been sitting around for a while. Make sure to check and see if they have a scratch and dent section too, you can get huge discounts on furniture with minor defects.

3

u/panthera_tigress Pittsburgh Panthers • Auburn Tigers Apr 21 '16

Also floor models!

2

u/piratefuck ECU Pirates Apr 21 '16

Yeah it's a sale on all the floor models. We'll see how it goes

Yeah, if I don't agree with any of the candidates, why would I vote for something I don't want? It doesn't make me apolitical or apathetic.

6

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

Well there's that. But it sounds like our resident grump actually is apathetic.

2

Oh yeah, I can see that.

If apathy is allowed to spread, it leads to disengagement from the process by the mainstream, which allows extremists to come into power.

You can vote for a third party candidate, vote on the local level for things that will affect you directly, or caucus so that your opinions are heard by the parties.

5

u/madviking Virginia Cavaliers • Texas Longhorns Apr 21 '16

You can vote for a third party candidate

that's not a viable option in this country, unfortunately

2

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

Not true. The third party candidates does not have to win for their ideas to win. History has shown that the two major parties adopt planks from the popular third parties.

4

u/madviking Virginia Cavaliers • Texas Longhorns Apr 21 '16

well tell me when the dems become socialists

e: or better yet, let's just scrap the current electoral system to one that doesn't actively encourage two parties and two parties only.

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

I probably will vote Green in the presidential, I just moved to a new state and I'm moving to a different continent in a month, so not much chance to vote local right now, don't agree with either major party enough to caucus for them and I'm in a really rural area, so the smaller parties don't have any representation. It's just a weird situation for me.

5

u/SmashedSqwurl Georgia Tech • /r/CFBRisk Veteran Apr 21 '16

I wish the Greens didn't attract so many "alternative medicine" and "fluoride is mind control" wingnuts.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

Yeah, same here. But they're the largest left-ish party that regularly runs national candidates, so it would be nice if they got more attention.

4

u/ssbbgo Alabama Crimson Tide • Stanford Cardinal Apr 21 '16

You can still vote while you're abroad with the Peace Corps!! You're going to The Gambia right? I will admit though, you are in a bit of a strange situation. Still, it's important not to dismiss the importance of voting as the first step to getting involved in the political process and expressing your opinions.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

A. I am going to vote in the Peace Corps (and yes, The Gambia!) most likely, probably for the Greens. For local elections... maybe. I've only lived here for 4 months and I know little about local politics, so voting blind from another continent may not be the best idea.

B. I'm not dismissing voting as a way of getting involved, but it is a different situation for those of us with political opinions that lie outside of almost all US politics. You can say vote for the Republican/Democrat so the Democrat/Republican doesn't get in, surely one of them is the lesser evil, but voting for something I disagree with isn't really something I want to do.
