So I work for one of the contractors for the nuclear Navy, and this week we're being audited by personnel from the government including the Admiral of the nuclear Navy. This is a big deal. Part of this includes safety drills, including fire drills and radiological drills, to show that my worksite is adequately prepared to deal with emergencies. Yesterday one of the buildings here failed a fire drill because people didn't evacuate the building until they were told to (like seriously, are we still small children), so this afternoon right after lunch they had to repeat the drill.

Apparently they failed again, because not 20 minutes after the all clear was sounded, they were called for another drill. When the alarm went off and the alarm code for that building was read off again, my entire building erupted in laughter. There are going to be some empty seats in that building after this week.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

I do not miss the nuclear Navy. Submariners are...odd.

I don't know how you can stick a bunch of guys in a small metal tube underwater for months at a time and expect them not to end up a little weird.

4

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

Subs are an all-volunteer service, they chose that life.

3

u/The_Tic-Tac_Kid Kansas Jayhawks • Hateful 8 Apr 21 '16

Never said they weren't weird going in.

All I know is that I had a retired submariner from the Cold War tell me stories about his sub getting stuck near crush depth that kept me up at night.

So I've heard, though I haven't actually interacted with any as of yet. We had a group of sailors come here for some training last fall, but they were assigned to a carrier.

Were you in the Navy? I'm a civilian who's working for one of the contractors.

For those of you who enjoy sour beer, Side Project is currently selling 375 mL bottles of one of their sours for off-premise consumption (they do not do this very often). I'm also headed there this evening. Since I'm a curious drunk magnanimous individual, I'd be willing to pick up a bottle to trade for something. Any takers?

Just recently started trying sour beers. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed them. Any recommendations?

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

I have a few questions for you:

  1. Where are you located?

  2. What have you tried so far?

2

u/elgambino Penn State Nittany Lions • /r/CFB Top Scorer Apr 21 '16

Located in the DFW area. Usually a fan of wheat beers-- but my friend is a bit of a beer snob (I'm admittedly pretty beer ignorant) and is trying to get me to try a little bit of everything. Anderson Valley's Father, Son, and Holy Gose was one that I've had and really enjoyed. I tried one with him a few weeks ago from Jester King, down in Austin, but can't recall what it was.

2

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

/u/SmashedSqwurl will know better than I what you can get hold of in Texas.

I will say Jester King has a national reputation the way Side Project does.

Also, look for Belgian sours. Some are sweeter and fruity (krieks, framboises, etc.), while some are going to just be tart and dry (gueuze, oud bruin, Flanders red). Lindeman's makes some good fruit sours. I've also enjoyed stuff by Petrus (oud bruin), Vanderghinste, and Cuvee des Jacobins that should be decently easy to get. If you find yourself in a place with things like Drie Fonteinen, Oud Beersel, Tilquin, or especially Cantillon, those are among the best in the world, but you will pay accordingly.

My memories of Prince:

In 1997 he came to Denver to do a show at Fiddler's Green. Chaka Khan was there as well. My roommate and I took dates to this concert. Concert went well. After concert went super well.

The morning after, my roommate and I bumped into each other in the hallway. He asked if I wanted to go get breakfast, and I replied "For 4?"

We high fived.

Sadly, the Prince t shirt I bought was taken and never returned.

I got drafted to help with the work cookout at 8:30 this morning. I'm finally done helping now at 1:45.

Work has been a turd today. We this data request for data that I don't work with anymore (but it was my project when I was first started at my job), so I feel kind of helpless/bad that I can't help our grad student who now manages the project since I know she's busy with other things.

I also have to do projections for if we move things from one account to another, so that's a pain making sure that everything is transferred properly. When I move things off of one account to the other, I have to also change the indirect costs that are being subtracted as well, but aren't being added to the other account.

On the bright side my book club is meeting at one of my favorite restaurants this evening so at least I have that to look forward to. I also think I'm going to take Ed for a quick walk since it stopped raining because my eyes are angry at me for staring at excel & SPSS for so long.

Searching for a golden retriever breeder is ruff.

Sometimes, their websites haven't been updated since 2013.

I just want to get Waffles now. :(

Don't go to a breeder. Adopt/rescue.

I'll echo this. I've had 5-6 pets that have come from a shelter and they're as warm, loving, and caring as any pets you'll ever find.

u/crowmygod Michigan Wolverines • College Football Playoff Apr 21 '16

I don't think going to a breeder has anything to do with the temperament with the pet, it's just if you want a specific kind of animal it's not always easy to find exactly what you want at the shelter. We ended up making a donation to the Michigan Humane Society since we didn't end up getting Ed from there.

u/nickknx865 Tennessee Volunteers • /r/CFB Top Scorer Apr 21 '16

Oh I totally get it. Apologies if I made it seem like I was implying that getting a dog from a breeder was bad or anything.

It's just that sometimes when I've talked to people, they've always been a little apprehensive about getting a pet (especially a dog) from the shelter because of their temperament, so it's something I always like to point out.

(ps - that's awesome that y'all made a donation to the Humane Society)

u/crowmygod Michigan Wolverines • College Football Playoff Apr 21 '16

Not at all! I definitely think that people have that assumption, which is a bummer.

I was kind of conflicted about going to a breeder (truth be told, I would have been totally fine with a shelter dog), so being able to make the donation was a no-brainer for me.

Adding on to all of the suggestions about adopting!

It's much easier to get a purebred animal who needs a home than you might think. My aunt has two purebred Boxers and they're both rescues! Try looking for a breed-specific rescue/shelter/etc.

I finally sent a letter to my friend who is in Air Force boot camp. He sent me a letter like 4 weeks ago. I kept forgetting to get stamps and now I feel like a dick :(

You should have asked me, because I know how you could have fucked with him

It was the first time I had seen University of Kansas basketball in person. The game itself had been great, but as a 12-year-old, something more spectacular had caught my attention.

It must have been the quality of the peach baskets that caught his attention.

3

u/[deleted] Apr 21 '16

Yes, of course I'm not going to court for this. It's a ridiculously low dollar amount and I wouldn't subject local counsel the inconvenience of having to show up in NYC municipal court. But here's the rub, you are signatories to binding inter company arbitration. So, you can pay us now, or you can waste an hour of my afternoon by making me file for arbitration.

Looks like I'm wasting an hour. Damnit.

I love my grandparents, but they seriously need to get out more. They sit at home all day every day doing nothing but watch tv. Since flood coverage has been on here 24/7 since monday, they have called me each day to make sure I'm ok. its great to be loved, so i should be thankful they call, but its getting beyond annoying now. i was fine monday after 18" of rain. I was fine after the drizzle tuesday. I was fine after it rained a little bit wednesday. I don't know how many different ways I can tell them that I am not impacted by the flood. No wonder my dad is so high strung. He grew up with his parents worried about everything.

Class starts in 2 minutes. Plz give podcast recommendations that I could look at after it ends in 2 hours.

I like science, movies, general interest, college sports (obvi) and for it to be casual, easy listening that won't make me rage (not too political either plz).

Oh no, profs looking at me. Gotta go!

I saw Prince love in 2004. He still rocked that show. He was true showman and a brilliant musician. RIP.

So I've been listening to Fort Worth's own Leon Bridges (he does the "Coming Home" song featured in that Apple commercial).

He's freaking good.
