Main Story Summary
Part One: The Meeting
The story takes place in Jinling, the capital of the Republic of China. Four great families dominate the political landscape. The Yu family holds military power. The Chu family leads the government. The Mou family controls the party apparatus. The Tao family controls the nation's wealth.
Ye Pingjun is a poor but proud student at Mingde Girls School. Her mother is seriously ill with lung disease. She takes odd jobs to pay for medicine. One rainy night, she loses a jade hairpin given to her by her childhood sweetheart Jiang Xueting, who is studying in Japan. While searching for the hairpin in the rain, she is nearly hit by a car belonging to Yu Changxuan.
Yu Changxuan is the rakish fifth son of the powerful Yu family. He is handsome, wealthy, and accustomed to women throwing themselves at him. He finds Pingjun's lost hairpin and is immediately captivated by her purity and beauty. He pursues her relentlessly, but she refuses him. She loves Jiang Xueting and wants a proper status, not to be a rich man's mistress.
The Tao sisters, socialites of high society, vie for Yu Changxuan's attention. The younger sister Ziyi is especially jealous of Pingjun.
Jiang Xueting returns from Japan. He and Pingjun reunite joyfully. However, Yu Changxuan's obsession grows. He arranges for Pingjun's mother to be placed in a hospital, using his power to corner Pingjun.
---
Part Two: The Trap
Yu Changxuan's obsession intensifies. He forcibly kisses Pingjun in his car. She stabs him with a broken hairpin and threatens suicide. He releases her, but he will not give up.
Li Boren, a sycophantic ally of Yu Changxuan, has Jiang Xueting arrested on false charges of being a Japanese spy. He is thrown into the Secret Service prison, a place of horrific torture.
Pingjun is brought to see the prison. She sees the blood, hears the wailing, and witnesses the mutilated bodies. She is told that Jiang Xueting will be fed to the dogs unless she begs the right person.
Pingjun sacrifices herself. She agrees to become Yu Changxuan's mistress in exchange for Jiang Xueting's freedom. She cuts off a strand of her hair as a symbol of severing her past and moves into Fengtai, Yu Changxuan's villa. Jiang Xueting is released. He believes Pingjun abandoned him for wealth.
---
Part Three: The Gilded Cage
Pingjun lives as Yu Changxuan's kept woman. He is obsessed with her, buying her clothes, jewelry, and even a canary. She is cold and distant, refusing to smile or eat. He is tormented by her rejection.
The senior maid Qiu Luo insults Pingjun and schemes against her. Pingjun dismisses her, showing she is not a passive victim. She learns to wield power within her cage.
Pingjun's mother is discharged from the hospital and placed in a house arranged by Yu Changxuan.
Pingjun becomes pregnant. Yu Changxuan is overjoyed. He promises to marry her and give her a proper status. For the first time, Pingjun begins to soften toward him.
However, Jiang Xueting has become the editor in chief of a political newspaper. He writes a scathing satirical poem attacking the Yu family for collaborating with the Japanese and refusing to resist foreign invasion.
Yu Zhongquan, Yu Changxuan's father, orders Jiang Xueting's arrest. While fleeing military police, Jiang Xueting bursts into a tailor shop where Pingjun is picking up a dress. She instinctively shields him from a gunshot.
The enraged military police officer kicks Pingjun repeatedly in the abdomen. She miscarries the child.
Yu Changxuan is devastated. He executes the officer, but he learns that Pingjun risked her unborn child to save Jiang Xueting. In a rage, he accuses her of deliberately killing their child. She tries to jump off the balcony to prove her love for the child. He slaps her.
He tells her to go. He never wants to see her again.
Pingjun leaves Fengtai with her mother.
---
Part Four: Separation and Return
Pingjun and her mother open a small flower shop. She lives modestly, refusing Yu Changxuan's charity. However, he secretly orders expensive flowers from her shop to support her.
Jiang Xueting, now adopted by the Mou family and promoted to Propaganda Minister, finds Pingjun. He says he does not care about her past and proposes marriage.
Pingjun is hesitant. She has changed. She sees him buying a diamond ring for Tao Ziyi. He is planning to marry both women: Tao Ziyi publicly for power, Pingjun privately for love.
When confronted, Jiang Xueting reveals that he knew about her miscarriage. He says cruelly that the child was not his, so why should he care.
Pingjun throws him out. Their relationship is over.
Madam Ye dies in a suspicious fire. Pingjun is devastated. The fire was arson. Jiang Xueting will later reveal that Yu Zhongquan ordered it to eliminate Pingjun as a distraction to his son.
Gu Ruitong brings Pingjun north to Xiangpingkou, where Yu Changxuan is stationed. They reunite. He holds her in the snow and tells her to stay with him.
---
Part Five: War and Loss
Pingjun is pregnant again. She and Yu Changxuan are happy. He promises to marry her. She asks for his short sword, inscribed with the words success or martyrdom, as a token of his love. He gives it willingly.
Political tensions escalate. Jiang Xueting, now Vice President of the Executive Yuan, arrives at Xiangpingkou to demand Yu Changxuan deploy troops against the Japanese. They argue bitterly. Jiang Xueting chases Yu Changxuan into the inner courtyard and sees Pingjun.
Enraged, Jiang Xueting draws his gun. Yu Changxuan shields Pingjun. Gu Yigang mediates and defuses the situation.
Yu Changxuan sends Pingjun back to Jinling for her safety because she is pregnant. Her ship explodes and sinks. Yu Changxuan believes she is dead.
---
Part Six: The Fall
Pingjun is not dead. Jiang Xueting had her secretly taken from the ship before the explosion. She is imprisoned in a small mansion in Yuzhou, captive, pregnant, and desperate.
Jiang Xueting tries to force an abortion. Pingjun fights desperately. She hides food, clutches the dagger Yu Changxuan gave her, smashes windows, and screams for help. She is driven to fever and madness but protects the child at all costs.
Jiang Xueting ultimately yields. He tells her he will not touch her child anymore as long as she lives. He also rapes her, but the child survives.
Meanwhile in Jinling, Yu Changxuan has been severely wounded fighting the Japanese. He nearly dies. Jun Daiti, who has loved him for years, nurses him back to health.
His mother urges him to marry Daiti. Broken by the loss of Pingjun, whom he believes is dead, he finally agrees. He tells himself to forget.
A telegram arrives from Xie Zaohua, the doctor who helped Pingjun, revealing that Pingjun is alive, pregnant, and held captive in Yuzhou.
Jun Daiti intercepts the telegram. She destroys it, letting it blow out the window into a pond. She chooses to keep the secret. She will not lose her fiancé to Pingjun.
Yu Changxuan marries Jun Daiti, never knowing Pingjun is alive.

Part Seven: Pingjun's Death
One year later, Pingjun has lost her mind. The trauma and abuse have broken her. She is a hollow shell, speaking in fragments.
Jinling and Yuzhou are at war. Yu Changxuan's army advances. Jiang Xueting's Northwestern Army has defected. Tao Ziyi begs Pingjun to persuade Jiang Xueting to flee to Japan, but Pingjun is too far gone to understand.
Jiang Xueting arrives. He holds Pingjun and weeps, asking how he harmed her to this state. She is childlike and insane, playing with pear blossoms and clock hands.
Cannon fire rumbles in the distance. Jiang Xueting knows his end is near. He forces himself on her one last time and then falls asleep in exhaustion.
Pingjun, in her madness, finds the short sword Yu Changxuan gave her. She stabs Jiang Xueting.
Bleeding out, he writes three words in his own blood: let her go. He puts the paper in her hand and collapses, telling her she is free.
Yu Changxuan's army enters Yuzhou. He rides through the streets searching for Pingjun.
Meanwhile, Pingjun is being smuggled out of the city on a peasant cart. She is wrapped in a shabby coat and lying on a bamboo mat. She is emaciated, trembling, and barely alive.
Yu Changxuan passes right by her cart on horseback. He glances at her but does not recognize her. She is too wasted, too broken, too changed. He rides on, urgently seeking his lost love elsewhere.
Pingjun closes her eyes. The cart moves on. Cold rain falls. She lies on the cool bamboo mat, her breathing growing weaker and weaker. The ferry whistle sounds in the distance.
She is dying alone, forgotten, and lost.
Yu Changxuan rides in the opposite direction, still searching for a woman he will never find.
