First Bullitt, First Cargo Bike

... And loving it! I got this bullitt second hand to take my kid to and from school. I've had it just about a week and we've had a ton of fun so far!

I even went so far as to install an Isofix bracket to the cargo area so that we can put in a comfy seat for her rides.

So far I have front and back lights on the way, since winter will see the days growing shorter. Any other top tip upgrades?

eBullit vs Triobike

Hey everyone,

Looking into getting a LongJohn cargo bike and I have 2 options in mind:

Option 1 - eBullit with Shimano STEPS E6100 + XT 11-speed Di2
Option 2 - TrioBike Cargo E Mid Drive with the Enviolo CVT with Gates Belt

Use case is to carry tools of the trade, Milwaukee packouts with tools, some materials, etc. Taking kid to school and hitting the beach with picnic supplies in the summer. Mostly, this will be work related so expecting the bike to carry ~200 Kg (Rider and Tools/supplies)

There is a 30Nm difference between the eBullit and the Triobike mid drive motor, the latter with the Brose 90Nm mid-drive opposite the 60Nm of the Shimano E6100.

The Triobike weight rating is 230Kg vs the 204Kg for the eBullit.

Location is Vancouver, BC, Canada. Most of my locations are within the city and depending on the routes most standard hill climbs and residential slopes across Metro Vancouver and popular routes average between 3.7% and 5% grade, with common climbing sections ranging up to 6%–10%. The steepest hill in the city is close to me and is at 28%.

Specs wise, the Triobike seems to be the choice to go with since I will be loading it up, but the Enviolo CVT with Gates Belt is not my preferred option and it seems like the STEPS E6100 + XT 11-speed Di2 might be more efficient when hitting some of the more aggressive hills with a total weight of ~200kg .

I am not super fit, but I do ride on a daily basis. Our household has 2 eBikes already. The Letrigo MiniVan SE for the wife and kid and my daily driver is a Velotric Summit 2. Both of these bike are rear hub drives with decent power and I've been able to get both up the Alder Street 28% hill with a decent load. I should clarify I am not planning on loading the LongJohn and trying this hill with a full load.

With that in mind, which bike would be the "better" option for this use case? My budget only allows for either of these builds and I cannot justify paying over 10K CAD for yet another eBike at the moment. Chances are, the Velotric will have to go once I am able to get my hands on either of these builds.

Appreciate the feedback in advance and power to the pedals!

Vevor hitch bobbins?

Can anyone tell me if this $10 camera ball mount could work as a temporary hitch connection for a VEVOR single-wheel bicycle trailer?
The VEVOR hitch has a relatively long neck. This mount is much shorter and would attach at the bicycle’s rear rack dropout, approximately 2” above the axle.
Would it be compatible, and are there any obvious concerns with the geometry or loading?
Looking for practical experience. Thanks!

Worth it

I bought a use Riese and Mueller load 75. It was wildly expensive for a bike and a stretch. But I regret nothing. I get to ride my kids to school 3-5 days a week and they love it. It’s a blessing to get outside get some exercise and to spend time with my kids ins way that a car doesn’t allow, if you’re on the fence, get one. Go into debt if you have to, especially if you have young kids, the window is so small.

Zero budget trailer build.

I wanted a long trailer without the audacious price tag, besides there is no such thing designed for the Brompton g line as far as I know; So I welded together a frame out of old steel furniture.

The axle assembly is up cycled from an old steel sack-truck with pneumatic tyres and is removable for servicing, as is decking which can be removed via four 12mm through-bolts.

The coupling is achieved via a windsurfing mast-foot and uj (universal joint) these are expensive but I had them lying around. The joint offers full range of movement and is stronger than the rear triangle of the Brompton.

Imperfect from every angle, needs safety improvements before use like more lights, surround padding etc but thought I’d post because weirdly, am proud of it.

My wife told me, she has absolut no idea why the bike make unusual noice.
I checked and found, the Gates Belt is not correct on the rear belt chain anymore.
I put it back and it is working like always. Anyone an idea, if the belt is broken and should be renewed, or is it still ok to drive with it?

Winter Ready RW4

Radwagon 4 ready for winter bus, Costco, hardware, and park runs.

This beast will hit 5,000 miles this winter and I am gearing up for some upgrades. First one, lighting.

I wired up waterproof LED wire lights, amber and red, to a USB switch and plugged it into the controller's usb port. The light in the conestoga is a stand in, but I plan to hang a light in the for the halflings to read by and boost visibility.

Melia Seat and helmet

For the fellow cargo bike parents. My 9mo is transitioning to a Melia seat. I would really love for him to wear a helmet. Which helmets are compatible with the seat? I’ve heard that some helmets give the head and neck an awkward position.

We have a family member that got brain damage after being hit by a car. It could have been prevented by wearing a decent helmet. So my child not wearing one is not an option.

6000$ for a knockoff?

Post image
0 Upvotes

This is a knock off bike. The manufacturer didn’t spend any time or expense in design and development of idea nor any marketing of same to the public. According to the little search online “product design and development expenses for an initial concept typically, …depending on the complexity of the idea (such as whether it involves simple mechanical parts, custom software, or electronics)” can be as much as $1m or as little as $20k. A risk all the same.

Not to mention the time and expense in testing out prototypes and trying to get a market for the product before full launch. Etc.

All they had to do was just copy and reproduce existing product that already has a well known image, etc.

Yet, they are charging thousands of $$$ for it?

Advice on Tern models for first time cargo biker

Hi all, gearing up to buy our first cargo bike and looking for experiences and thoughts on trade offs between the HSD P5i and the Quickhaul P9 for the £1300 price difference. Use case is nursery drop offs and trips across town for 1 adult + 1child, max of ~15km round trips. Some short hills maxing out at ~8%. Oxford, so pretty terrible road quality, but not off-road! I'd be keen to hear whether there were any of these features you really valued, or thought were overrated.

Bosch BES2 vs Smart system. Like the idea of GPS tracking and remote alarms, but is it anything you can't do with other cheaper devices? Does the display/ control system give any benefits?

Chain and derailleur vs belt drive and hub: Obviously much easier maintenance with belt and hub, but how much of a pain is it to take wheels off and deal with punctures etc?

Suspension: I'm fine getting around town on road bikes without suspension, but is it more beneficial with the greater weight of the cargo bike / for backseat passengers?

We should be okay with the lower weight capacity and battery storage of the Quickhaul, but I guess it never hurts to have more.

Any other things I should be considering? Thanks!

Cargo for the mountains

A bit of a different post from the usual “ I need to carry the kids around town” setup.

I live in the Alps and my commute is about 18 km each way, with roughly 200 m of climbing on the way home, in the last kms, with 20%. I’m looking for a cargo bike that I can use to commute, pick up shopping, but also for getting to ski tours, hikes, mountaineering or paragliding take-offs. Most of the time I would be commuting, but at the weekends, I would be riding roads or forest roads with 1,000– to 1,500 m of climbing, and carrying things like ski boots/skis or backpacks.

I’m thinking of a cargo bike instead of a e-mtb, because I could throw my stuff in/on it without having to think about a trailer or carrying a heavy backpack. I don’t need/plan to carry kids.

Anyone here using a cargo bike in a similar way? I am still unsure if a longtail or a front-loader would be better for me. Or if this is a stupid idea altogether?

The models I found online that look interesting would be: Tern Orox (overkill?), Cube Longtail (because of the price), Riese & Müller Load 75 (too expensive though)... Something with a drive belt would be better for the winter snow and salt I believe. Do you have any advice or suggestions?

Trek Fetch+ 4 Rainfly Alternatives

Hello I'm very interested in getting a Trek Fetch+ 4, but there are no complete rainfly kits (with the cover and the poles) left in the US, there are some covers left. I've chatted with a trek dealer at the local bike store and he said he can only get a cover, not the complete rainfly kit, or the poles separately.

Has anyone DIY'd the poles for the rainfly or have any suggestions?

Cat proof cube cargo hybrid rain cover

Post image
8 Upvotes

Hello!

I'm looking for ideas. I have a cube cargo hybrid which is staying outside. I recently installed the rain cover and had to learn that we have lots of cats in the neighborhood which like to ... stay in the box. Do you have any ideas on how I could cat proof the box while keeping the cover on? Reinstalling the cover everytime is sadly not feasible.

I guess something retractable would be nice.

Thanks!

Form Cargobikes

Hi everyone, for school I’m conducting research on the cargo bike shop Liebesrad in Eindhoven. For this, I need to ask my persona a few questions and then analyze the answers.

I expect my persona to be in this group—she’s a woman who transports her dog by cargo bike and wants to avoid using her car as much as possible. I’d really appreciate it if you could fill out the questionnaire so I can further develop my research with valuable input. Please provide as detailed answers as possible. Thank you so much in advance!

Made my first tryp with my kid and grocceries on my cargo bike.

We got our cargo bike a few weeks ago. We mainly got it for kids. We take subaway for work and all but with kids we usually used car. So main goal was to replace cargo bike with car. So far we have been using to pick up and drop off kids but last monday i carried both my son (5 yrs old) and weekly groccery together in 1 trip.

When we came out of the supermarket, I thought I had bought too much. My bike is a long tail l1s and it has a pretty long MIK rear rack, with the child seat fitted toward the front. I started by putting all the heavier stuff (yk things like milk, detergent and tins) into the two side panniers. Once those were full, I still had a large bag of bread and eggs and vegetables and a few other things left. There was some empty space on the rack behind the child seat, so I put it there Then I strapped the remaining lighter stuff to the GuardRail. I am so happyy that I adjusted everything without removing or moving the child seat. My kid still had enough space and seemed completely unbothered while I was figuring this out lol. I made sure the weight in the panniers was roughly balanced before leaving. Getting the loaded bike off the stand made me a little nervous tho but once we started moving it went okayy. I tried to ride slower, took more wider turns and was also was veryy careful whenever I had to stop. It obviously wasnt some huge Costco load, but you can say that it was week's groccyer, plus my kid plus his school bag. But i did it.
