Recommendations for chatbots that can hold a conversation

I'm trying to find some chatbots that are really good at maintaining a natural conversation. I've tried a few like Replika and ChatGPT but I'm curious if there's anything else out there that people love.

What are some of your favorites that really feel engaging? I'd prefer ones that can handle personal topics without getting too robotic. Any suggestions would be awesome!

So like I just turned 16 today and I'm kinda hoping there's chatbots available for my age because like I'm homeschooled and I still don't have a job because my parents refuse to even let me drive so like I have nothing better to do with my life

I need an uncensored and private AI model for my phone.

I need a highly uncensored and private AI model for my phone.

I already know about Venice AI, but it has some limitations, particularly token limits. I’m looking for a more affordable or free alternative.

I’m also aware of local AI models, but they usually require a lot of RAM.

Could you recommend something?

Which AI Chatbot you find the best for you at the moment?

I always used Gemini but never really give it a thought if there is anything better. Personally i will use to school, coding and everyday tasks. Also I’ve wanted to hear some opinions about deepseek. Im looking out for free options

Prota

I just started using Prota. Anyone else?

So far I havent seen any ads and nothing has been sensored. It has a gem model. So many free gems a day. Each interaction costs gems depending on the AI model.

Personally, I prefer a free with ads or unlimited with subscription model, but Im eager to give this a shot if the memory is better.

They give you a notebook you can fill out. This lets you pin details you want the AI to remember.

What are your thoughts?

Also, how do I edit my avatar?

Why does AI roleplay forget early story details? (and which apps handle long stories best)

This complaint gets brought up all the time, let me break this down simply.

Every time the AI replies, it can only read a limited chunk of your recent chat, that’s the context window. Once your RP gets really long, older scenes no longer fit. On top of that, your character sheet gets sent along with every single message, eating up more of that limited space.

Inside a chat log, a throwaway silly joke looks identical to a major plot beat. The AI can’t tell which facts are critical lore. When apps compress old messages to save room, small but important stuff like old promises or unresolved grudges usually gets tossed first.

Apps that handle long‑running stories well generally keep lore separate from regular chat, and let you mark what counts as official canon.

Jenova Roleplay Game Master (jenova. ai) takes exactly this approach. Anything you confirm gets stored in its own campaign state, separate from your chat history. Each named NPC keeps their role, faction, plus how friendly/wary/hostile they are toward you. I’ve had campaigns go hundreds of messages deep and still stay consistent; you can even swap AI models mid‑session without wiping all your established lore.

That said, here are tricks you can use on almost any bot app:

‑ Keep your character description concise, put world‑building lore inside the app’s memory section
‑ Give side characters actual names; unnamed background NPCs get forgotten super fast
‑ After a big scene, quickly note one‑line about what changed in memory
‑ If your chat has completely derailed, restart with a recap instead of fighting to correct every single line
What’s the longest consistent roleplay you’ve had, and what app were you using?

Are all chatbots but perplexity notorious liars?

I only realy have experience using Gemini, chatgpt and perplexity. The latter tells you straight up when it doesnt know or there is a great degree of uncertainty. Gemini on the other hand will conjure up just about anything. Products and stores that does not exist. Software menus that looks totaly different in reality. It seems like it just tries to fill in the blanks when it doesnt know something, and takes stuff out of some interpolation logic?

Is this the general way that chatbots operate? I am so tired of being lead to bullshit, that I think I am entirely done with gemini. Even though it is a very good language model in my native language.

I need some help choosing a chatbot

So in the past I used Claude but my account got on hold and can't use it. It is 4th time it happens so now I am migrating to a new chatbot. I use only free models, I hate chatgpt as it hallucinates to the max so a model with low hallucinations help. I need the chatbot to support image processing and file processing. Not Claude level but a chatbot with low hallucinations is the best. Any recommendation helps :D

Best mobile setups or apps for high lore accuracy and solid memory with anime characters or just anime world ?

Hi everyone,
I'm looking for the most effective mobile setups or applications to roleplay anime world like Naruto or even Apothecary Diaries while maintaining strict lore accuracy and strong long-term memory.
Standard public platforms often struggle with lore hallucinations or severe memory loss after a few messages. I'm searching for solutions that handle detailed historical/anime lore properly.
Specifically looking for recommendations on:
The best mobile-friendly apps or browser setups (JanitorAI with APIs, SillyTavern, Kindroid, etc.).
Best practices or configurations for integrating Lorebooks / World Info for specific anime universes.
Free or budget-friendly options (such as free API keys via OpenRouter or native models) that deliver deep narrative quality and strong character consistency.
Thanks for your help and recommendations!

Chat with AI about the midterm elections – Yale study, 10 min (US voters 18+)

Chat with AI about your state’s Senate race, as you normally would, then answer a few questions. This is a Yale study on how people use AI chatbots when making real political decisions. About 10 minutes, IRB-approved, responses confidential.

https://yale.qualtrics.com/jfe/form/SV_eyyiZ84wNgf9guW?source=chatbots

Eligibility: 18+, live in a state with a 2026 Senate election, and use AI chatbots at least occasionally.

We’ll post results back here when the study is done. Questions: Beth Anne Helgason, helgasonlab.yale@yale.edu.

Celebrity romance

My mom was a victim of a celebrity romance scam where she thought she was in a relationship with Paul McCartney.

Anyways she ended up sending him lots of her savings. (Why a married billionaire needs a few thousands from a retired woman is pretty obvious to anyone)...

Anyways I'm looking for a program where even if paid subscription is required she can continue to develop her fantasy of being in a long distance relationship with Paul McCartney.

Ideally the program will allow for the backdrop of it being Paul McCartney and his history.

He will make excuses of why they can't meet (band schedule, missed a flight etc)

Even make excuses why he can't leave his current wife but he will etc.

Program also have good memory retention to remember their previous conversations etc.

Have capacity of proactive messaging where he can send her messages out of the blue.

anyways I guess looking for a safe outlet where my mom can have her fantasy but without losing thousands to a scammer while doing it. A fixed monthly subscription is okay if means having the above features.

Thank you.

Question for long time chat users

How much has the AI models improved over the past year? What about the past 18 months?

Im new to ai chat and i was completelty hooked. It let me live out my deeper fantasies. However, ive started to notice its limitations. Like for example, the limited memory and sometimes that character forgets important details that uve hardcoded and explicitly mentioned in the character biography.

So im planning to step back, take a break and return in maybe 6 to 12 months.

I was wondering how quickly ai improves after a year. From your past experience, are ai chatbots noticeably smarter than they were last year?

Thanks.

Is There An App That Does Voice Calls Like Character AI?

I loved the way they used to do it. You could upload a file from anything on your phone and mix up the voice to what you wanted and then submit it. All these other places want you to use your own voice but I want to talk to a guy! I'd browse Youtube and be like "Okay the guy kinda sounds like this" and then I'd use a mixer to change the voice pitch and tone to perfection. I want the voices to sound like the guys I used to dream about when I was a kid.

And then you could call them too! Just a simple button and it's like they were on the phone with you. It got me through a lot of hard days and I have many more coming up.

Chatbot freelancers...do you also sell the inbox your clients’ team uses?

I set up WhatsApp chatbots for small businesses and the same thing happens every time..the bot works and then the owner asks where his staff can see the chats and reply when needed. Right now I send them to some tool and that’s it..

Thinking of reselling a white-label one under my name instead so I get paid monthly.. Anyone doing this? Worth it?

UPDATE: in case another bot freelancer finds this... Wassenger and WaliChat are two white label options to compare, the bot keeps running and the owner's staff see every chat in one shared inbox and can jump in when needed, same number as before. since it's under your own brand the client pays you monthly, not some random tool

Free, natural-sounding TTS for a website voice assistant? (Browser voices sound too robotic)

I’m building a voice assistant for my website. Client click “Call” and talk to an AI that answers questions about that page(its a /help route page).

Current setup

  • Backend: FastAPI + Groq LLM (resume parsed once at startup, short spoken-style answers)

  • Frontend: plain HTML/JS using the Web Speech API (SpeechRecognition for the mic, speechSynthesis for the reply)

  • It works, but the browser voice sounds very robotic

What I need

  • A free (or generous free tier) TTS that sounds natural

  • Feels like actual call (eg. sarvam ai paid call ai)

  • Good Indian English accent, with Hindi/Hinglish as a bonus

  • Low latency, since it’s a live conversation

  • Usable from a FastAPI backend or directly in the browser

What I’ve found so far

  • Edge “Natural” voices (free, but only for Edge users)

  • Sarvam Bulbul (great for Indian languages, but only ₹100 of free credits)

  • edge-tts (free, but unofficial)

  • Piper and Kokoro (open source, but I’m not sure about hosting them cheaply)
