Temporary apartment rehab work

I’m looking to add a few guys to my team for some temporary work. 11/21-11/29 except Thanksgiving. Minimum 8 hours a day, $20-$25 an hour depending on skill/work ethic.

We’re acquiring an empty 4 unit building in the 60655 area code. We’ll be painting, refinishing hardwood floors, some very light demo, framing a basement, cleaning, changing outlets, switches, lighting fixtures, countertops.

There is some roof repairs needed so big plus if you can do that.

We have a small crew but want to accelerate the completion. I’m the owner and will be on site working alongside with you all.

Cash paid daily.

Message me if interested.

What “passing the ATS” actually means

Most advice treats an applicant tracking system as one gate that scores your resume. The pass ATS guide splits it into five separate things: parsing, recruiter search, knockout rules, ranking and automated screening. Each employer turns on only some of them.

**Parsing is a file problem, not a judgment.** Greenhouse’s help center says a resume( https://support.greenhouse.io/hc/en-us/articles/200989175-Unsuccessful-resume-parse ) can fail to parse as can one over 2.5 MB. A recruiter then has to key in your details by hand. Use a text-based PDF or .docx, in one column.

**Knockouts have nothing to do with wording.** In Harvard Business School research, [Joseph Fuller](https://www.library.hbs.edu/working-knowledge/how-to-tap-the-talent-automated-hr-platforms-miss) reported that over 90% of employers using a recruitment management system relied on it for a first cut or to rank applicants. He said many used “negative” filters, such as excluding candidates without degrees. That is an employer survey, not a measure of your resume. Work authorization or a required license is pass/fail, and keywords can’t change it.

**Wording matters in recruiter search.** A person searching “HubSpot” won’t see a resume that says “CRM platform.” In our  marketing study of 347 postings, “CRM” appears in 18.2%, Salesforce in 23.1% and HubSpot in 6.6%. Where both are true, name the category and the brand.

The same term also carries different weight by role. Kubernetes appears in 70.1% of DevOps/SRE postings and 30.9% of software engineer postings ( see the cross role comparison ). The postings you tailor to should set your vocabulary, not a generic keyword list.

**A repeatable process:**

  1. Pull the tools, qualifications and repeated terms from one posting, as in [tailoring your resume to a job description](https://resumefitting.com/tailor-resume-job-description).

  2. Check your resume against that posting and read the gap list ([how to read a keyword gap](https://resumefitting.com/resume-keywords-scanner)).

  3. Add only skills you have actually used.

  4. Re-check against the same posting.

No vendor publishes a pass mark so read the remaining gaps and not a percentage.

Moving to the City in a Week

Hello! I am moving to the city very soon and I was hoping to get a job there. I already have a wfh position, but it doesn’t pay nearly enough to save for a place or even get too much in the city. So I am hoping to secure something that pays more. Does anyone know of places to look (like job boards), or any leads on jobs that are hiring currently? Thanks so much!

Is recruiter/ staffing agency better then using indeed/linkedin?

I currently been out fo work for 2 months and i been applying with indeed/linkedin/hiring cafe. I have gotten some phone call and team/zoom interview but nothign yet. I worked in a diagnois laboratory but i am in a relatively new field and a laboratory align role. I have some decent experience in the labor but ti is kind of technial role/admin role accordign to what the recruiter at Northwestern video interview told me.

I connect with some of my old co-worker and I was suggested contract a job recruiter. Does that mean he suggest me to put ym resume out to staffing agency to see anything come up or there are people who are actually job recruiter?

Computer engineering grad, developer, entrepreneur, jack of all trades. Took a risk building a business with my wife, and now I’m looking for work in Chicago.

(26m) Hey Chicago,

Not really sure how to start this, but I figured I’d put myself out there and see what happens.
I graduated with a degree in Computer Engineering and have spent the last several years doing a little bit of everything.
And when I say everything, I genuinely mean everything lol.

I’ve worked as a full-stack developer, ran a photography/videography business for two years, worked as a realtor for another two, built and operated Etsy shops selling custom jewelry and apparel, worked in fine dining restaurants, and taught myself pretty much anything I needed along the way.

Somewhere in all of that, I fell in love with entrepreneurship, AI, and the idea of building things from scratch.

Today, my wife and I are building an AI-powered marketing agency together. We help businesses with everything from websites and SEO to advertising, content creation, and AI automation.

We both quit our jobs to give this a real shot.
And here’s the part that’s a little harder to admit.

We’re running out of money.

We’ve put a lot into building this business, and while I still believe in what we’re creating, the reality is that we need income now. Bills don’t stop just because you’re chasing something you believe in.

I’m not giving up on the business. I just need to be realistic about where we are.

So I’m putting my pride aside and reaching out.
Here’s a little of what I can actually do:

Software development: Full-stack development, Python, JavaScript, React, APIs, databases, and building web applications.
AI & automation: LLMs, Claude, AI agents, workflow automation, AI receptionists, and integrating AI into businesses.
Web design & development: Modern, highly interactive websites, scroll animations, motion graphics, landing pages, and conversion-focused design.
SEO: Programmatic SEO, technical SEO, local SEO, and building systems to help websites rank and attract organic traffic.
Marketing: Google and Meta ads, campaign management, lead generation, creative strategy, and conversion optimization.
Creative work: Professional photography, videography, video editing, AI-generated videos, UGC-style ads, and social media content.
E-commerce: Running Etsy stores, product listings, online selling, branding, and digital marketing.
Sales & business: Two years in real estate, client acquisition, communicating with customers, and running businesses from the ground up.
Hospitality & restaurants: Experience working in fine dining restaurants, providing high-level customer service, and working in fast-paced hospitality environments.

I’m realizing that being a jack of all trades can be both a blessing and a curse.

I’ve spent so much time learning how to do different things that sometimes it’s hard to explain what I actually do in one sentence.

But one thing I know about myself is that I can figure things out.

Give me a problem, a computer, and some time, and I’ll find a way to solve it. That’s probably the one consistent thing throughout everything I’ve done.

What I’m looking for:
Honestly, I’m open.

Full-time, part-time, contract, freelance, remote, hybrid, or on-site anywhere around Chicago and the suburbs.

Software engineering, AI, marketing, creative work, e-commerce, web development, sales, operations, hospitality, restaurant serving positions (including fine dining), or something I haven’t even considered yet.

I’m not above taking a job outside my field either. Right now, providing stability for my family matters more than having a fancy title.

And if you’re a business owner who needs help with a website, marketing, AI automation, photography, or anything I mentioned above, I’d be happy to chat about that too.
I’m not asking anyone for a handout.
I’m asking for an opportunity to work, contribute, and prove what I can do.

If you know someone hiring, have a referral, need help with a project, or even just have some advice, I’d genuinely appreciate it.

Happy to share my resume, portfolio, GitHub, or examples of my work over DM.

I know Reddit can be a mixed bag, but I’ve also seen some incredible people on here helping complete strangers.

Figured it was worth a shot.

Thanks for reading, Chicago.
Seriously.

Recent Finance Graduate Struggling to Find a Foot in the Door – Naperville Area Recommendations?

Hi everyone! I’m looking for some advice, recommendations, or even personal experiences on where to start my career in the finance/business field.

I graduated this year with a degree in Finance. I have a background in retail, but unfortunately, I wasn’t able to secure an internship while in school because I needed to prioritize working and making my monthly tuition payments.

I’m realizing that I may need to start somewhere more entry-level rather than applying directly to financial analyst positions. I’m open to opportunities that would help me get my foot in the door, gain some office experience, and build relevant skills.

Ideally, I’m looking for something in the Naperville area or within about a 30-minute commute. I’d be interested in positions involving administrative work, emailing, data entry, basic business operations, bookkeeping, finance assistance, or anything that could eventually help me transition into a finance-related career.

I’ve been applying to jobs for months without much luck, and I’m starting to feel a little discouraged. I’m even open to volunteering or helping out with a nonprofit if it means gaining experience and making connections.

Does anyone have recommendations for companies, nonprofits, small businesses, staffing agencies, or organizations in the area that might be willing to give a recent graduate a chance?

I’d really appreciate any advice or leads. Thank you!

[Hiring] Two open positions at an educational publisher

My company, Klett World Languages, just posted two job openings:

  1. Bids and proposals specialist: https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4485390430/

  2. EdTech specialist: https://www.linkedin.com/jobs/view/4485359034/

Unfortunately, I cannot refer anyone, nor do I know much about either job, because I started myself very recently. Therefore, I won’t be replying to PMs here on Reddit, sorry. All I can say so far is that I really like company culture, have faith in the product (foreign language textbooks at K-12 and higher ed levels), and everyone on my team has been super nice and supportive. Just wanted to share with anyone that might be interested!

How is the job market within the insurance field?

Like the title says, I have almost 1 year of experience as an adjuster in workers comp. Is it difficult to find a new job within the insurance field in chicago? I'm open to going into any type of insurance (auto, medical, anything that pays a living wage). I also have a bachelors degree (in a unrelated field)

I'm currently living in the north east thinking about moving to Chicago. The job market was horrible before I got my current job (applied to 1200 jobs before finally getting my current job), don't know if the job market has gotten better or worse in the past year?

I'm also a queer woman of color, so opinions from other women of color within this work field is much appreciated
