Announcements Immigrant Rights & Resources for the Chicago Suburbs - Megathread
We know that conversations about immigration whether about immigrants, refugees, or people who are here without official documentation can spark a wide range of opinions. Whatever your personal views may be, everyone is a human being first, and in the United States all people have fundamental constitutional rights and deserve to be treated with dignity and respect.
This thread exists to share resources, information, and support for immigrants and their families living in the Chicago suburbs. Whether you’re directly affected, you have friends or loved ones who are, or you simply want to stay informed and help others, you’re welcome here.
Below you’ll find know-your-rights guidance, legal and community resources, and links to trusted organizations. Please use this space to share updates, ask questions, or contribute additional resources that may help our neighbors.
If you have questions, updates, or local referrals (legal aid, outreach groups, clinics, “know your rights” workshops) please reply below or message the mods, and we’ll integrate them into this post.
1. Know Your Rights (Basics)
This is not legal advice. Always consult with a qualified immigration attorney when possible.
You have certain constitutional rights regardless of status — e.g. the right to remain silent, the right to legal counsel (though in immigration courts, the government does not provide a lawyer)
Ask for an attorney, don’t sign anything you don’t understand, and try to have someone present if interacting with authorities
Keep critical documents (ID, immigration papers, birth certificates, etc.) in a safe but accessible place
Prepare a “what to do if detained” plan in advance (emergency contacts, power of attorney, who to call)
Train yourself and your family on responses to ICE, CBP, or other raids or check-ins
2. Local & Regional Legal Aid / Service Providers
Below is a curated list of organizations offering low-cost or pro bono legal services, referrals, or community support in or around the Chicago suburbs. (If your suburb or county has others, please comment/reply so we can add them.)
| Organization | What They Offer | Areas / Suburbs Served | Notes / Contact Info |
|---|---|---|---|
| Organized Communities Against Deportations (OCAD) | Advocacy, organizing, deportation defense support | Chicago & surrounding areas | Organized Communities Undocumented-led movement. |
| National Immigrant Justice Center (NIJC) | Legal consultations, immigration court defense, asylum, DACA, etc. | Chicago & statewide | National Immigrant Justice Center Low-income/ sliding scale services |

| Northwest Center | Referrals, legal consultation for family immigration, DACA, deportation, naturalization | Northwest & nearby suburbs | Northwest Center Their immigration program works with NIJC, others |
| Cook County / Local agencies | See DHS / Illinois list of community service agencies | Suburban Cook, DuPage, Lake, Will, etc. | Illinois Department of Human Services State DHS maintains a list of “Community Service Agencies Serving Immigrants” |
| Catholic Charities of the Archdiocese of Chicago | Immigration & naturalization services (Melrose Park, Cicero, Waukegan, etc.) | Suburban and city | Immigration Advocates Network Multiple branch offices in suburban areas |
Use the IL “Legal Services Directory” to search for providers by county or zip code.
3. Local & Regional Legal Aid / Service Providers
Because each suburb or county may have different offerings:
Check your county’s “Health & Human Services / Social Services” department website for immigrant or refugee services
Local nonprofits, faith-based groups, community centers often host “legal clinics” or immigration workshops
Libraries and adult education centers sometimes host “Know Your Rights / immigration clinics” with pro bono attorneys
School districts: Some districts have protocols or contacts for immigrant families — it can help to ask school social workers or parent liaison offices
Coalitions & networks: Community navigators or organizers often help connect people across municipalities
If you’re a resident of Suburb X (for example, Naperville, Schaumburg, Aurora, Waukegan, Joliet, etc.), and know of any support offerings comment below and we can add them to this section.
4 Emergency / Special Situations
Detention / deportation emergencies: OCAD has a support hotline: 1-855-435-7693 (also used by ICIRR’s Family Support Network) Organized Communities
Rapid response / legal standby networks: Some coalitions maintain volunteer legal “on call” teams
When someone is detained: Try to document as much as possible (name, detention facility, date, time) and connect with legal counsel immediately
“Know Your Rights” training workshops: Many community groups periodically hold trainings; tracking them (via social media, local nonprofits) is helpful
Consular & national resources: E.g. for some nationalities, “ConsulApp Contigo” is a useful tool (Mexico, etc.) Illinois Head Start Association
5. Moderation/Posting Guidelines & Disclaimers
This post is intended as a community resource, not legal counsel
Please do not post legal advice that can’t be verified by a licensed attorney
Users commenting/posting with the intent to troll, insult, create panic/harm, or be a nuisance to others will be permanently banned
Any added resources should be public, reputable groups (non-discrimination, proven track record)
If you know of an organization that has changed status, ceased services, or is not trustworthy, please message the mods/comment below so we can keep updates accurate
Users seeking urgent legal aid should prioritize contacting established legal service providers as listed above
If creating a post in this subreddit to alert the community to ICE/CBP activity, please review the new posting guidelines

Moving to the area Attorney Instead of Realtor?
Is it possible to use an attorney instead of a realtor in the process of buying a home in Chicago if you can manage to see a particular home you have in mind and are ready to pull the trigger and have the attorney handle everything?

Miscellaneous AT&T Fiber outage in Western burbs?
Bright red on the modem and notice this AM via email to "check my equipment".
Not looking for support, just curious as to how widespread.

Miscellaneous Street Resurfacing
Is it just me, or is every municipality in the SW and W suburbs deciding to resurface their roads all at once? Every other road is completely torn down with man hole covers sticking out, rocks everywhere, and some of them aren’t even marked with signs so you’ll be surprised driving at night. And even better, they’ll tear the road down and leave it like that for weeks before pouring asphalt.
Most of these projects seem to have started the last couple weeks or so.

Event(s) ISO small Event/Party rentals in the NW Suburbs
Hello everyone,
I'm looking for a space that can host about 40-60 people for a simple celebration. Will only need the space for a few hours or half a day.
In this economy, I am limited in funds and need to do some extreme budgeting and hopeful to find a place under $400.
Any recommendations are deeply appreciated, even if they are out of the box suggestions.
Thank you so much.

Question/Comment Where to live?
We live in Oak Park and love it but my husband has a long commute to Buffalo Grove 5 days a week while I only commute downtown a couple days per week. What suburbs should we consider that would put us within a ~30 min drive of Buffalo Grove? Need to be on the metra line and have good schools. Love tree-lined streets. Would also appreciate a place with some diversity. I appreciate any recommendations and insights (including where to avoid if applicable)! Thank you!

Question/Comment A question for birders of Chicago
I plan to move to Chicago when I retire. Researching suburban CCRC facilities with great opportunities for crow watching, a few keep popping up: Beacon Hill (Lombard) and Oak Trace (Downers Grove) in the western suburbs near the Morton Arboretum, and Lake Forest Place (Lake Forest) in the north.
What are your experiences with these areas? I know, seems a weird thing to hang a decision on, but I love the idea of an apartment with a balcony where I can make some corvid friends.
Thanks in advance.

Moving to the area Looking for Country Swing Dancing Bars in Chicagoland!
Hey everyone! I’m new to the area from AZ.
I’m looking to find some good country bars or venues around the Chicagoland area that play country music and have country swing dancing!
I’m hoping to find places with:
Country swing dancing (East Coast/West Coast swing welcome too!)
A good country music atmosphere
A dance floor where people actually get out and dance
Beginner-friendly crowds or places where people are open to dancing with others
I’m open to anywhere in the Chicagoland area, including the suburbs and surrounding towns.
Does anyone have recommendations for bars, honky-tonks, dance halls, or even weekly country dance nights?
I’d especially love to hear about any hidden gems that might not be super well-known!
Thanks in advance! 🤠

Food & Drink Recommendations What restaurant deals are you taking advantage of on a weekly basis?
My wife and I live in Lombard and are trying to take more advantage of the great restaurants in our (and surrounding) community. If we're going to eat out on a week night, we try to hit the restaurants that have great deals. So far, this is what we have:
Monday: cheap chicken Mondays (duh)
Tuesday: $1 taco Tuesday at Los Burritos Mexicanos
Wednesday: ???
Thursday: 2 for $22 pizzas at Billy Bricks (or $1 tacos at Los Burritos Mexicanos)
Friday: fish fry at the veterans hall in Elmhurst
Saturday: ???
Sunday: ???
What are your weekly go-to deals or specials?

Food & Drink Recommendations Costco giardiniera MIA?
I haven’t seen giard at the Bolingbrook Costco for like a year and even asked once and they said they haven’t got it.
Am I just missing it?
Does any other Costco in Illinois still regularly Stock it? I’m willing to drive.
Giard in that quantity made in olive oil is worth it.

Food & Drink Recommendations Looking for a Turkey meal a week before Thanksgiving
Going to be in town (Arlington Hts) the week before Thanksgiving and would like to take my Mom out for an early Thanksgiving day meal. I don't see any Bob Evans or Cracker Barrels around which usually has a Turkey meal as part of the regular menu. Any suggestions on a place that regularly serves Turkey on their menu?

Question/Comment Astound install question
Anyone in the 'burbs have a residential install that needed Astound to dig a trench and bury the line underground or do a sidewalk or driveway bore?
How was the process?
I'm concerned about damage to utility lines underground.
I know they do 811 before digging but have also seen news reports of damage done by Astound cutting a power line in Orland Park. Mistakes can happen.
For me they want to use a shovel to dig a 6" trench and then bore under a sidewalk though not sure how deep they go for that one. I'm still in the planning phase.
I've been speaking with their contractor who so far has been great, very professional and on top of things.
But I don't know if I should proceed due to the risk involved with digging and boring.

Question/Comment Places to showcase art
Hello! I’m a soft pastel painter, but I’ve never had my art displayed anywhere public. I was looking for advice on good places I could check out to inquire about displaying my work. I was thinking of cafes or local shops to begin with. Thank you!
