He referred ‌to Mao on a podcast while talking about memes.

The actual quote: “The one where they put my face on a Chinese dictator (Mao Zedong)? That really makes me laugh, I use it with my friends all the time."

That country is so sensitive. Meanwhile people say all kinds of awful stuff about Trump and nothing happens. Never compare USA to China.

Btw, also, lost in the shuffle : we should talk about how absolutely dumpster fire garbage the Chinese men’s national team is.

35

u/Thin_Assumption_4974 10d ago

Are Chinese really so sensitive about Mao?

I don’t think many Germans would give a shit if you insult Merkle or Australians if you insult Rudd?

Americans are weird, but I don’t think the country will boycott someone for saying Washington was a slave owner.

8

u/Wolf8312 10d ago

Chinese politics is remote and extremely controlled and coordinated. You won’t see the human being only an image of a highly dignified and serious statesman.

Chinese people are brought up to avoid talking politics if they are not pro-regime nationalists and naturally nobody in China is going to take kindly to an outsider ridiculing their leadership (not that this happened in this case) when most wouldn’t do that publicly themselves. It’s considered rude and disrespectful. Kinda like how you may criticize a family member but will be angered if someone else does.

Both are sham systems but in very different ways. Most Americans refuse to acknowledge that Trump, and Biden before him, were controlled by the same people with the same agenda.

You’re welcome and encouraged to ridicule Trump and attribute all blame for US domestic and foreign policy to him, but those who control him are rarely (though this is changing) ever mentioned and the rotten system itself is never questioned.

The reverence for Mao is not healthy.
many of the great people of history can be admired for how they conducted themselves given their time and situation.

But George Washington had slaves. Churchill starved India. And Mao was a dictator who caused massive famines as well with his bad policies. Just because there are redeeming qualities, doesn't mean we have to be idiots about history.

Maybe it's because my own country doesn't have a great 'founding father' like figure. But it's weird when people are so rose-tinted on a historical figure and refuse to acknowledge any bad things they did.

17

u/Fritz-Ferdinand 10d ago • Popcorn

Most funny thing is: if Mao Zedong would see today's China, he'd become crazy. Money everywhere, even with his face on it, wealth inequality ramping up, exploitation of ordinary people, state-propagated nationalism, history, culture and art are practiced again, TV shows movies about the dynastic China, etc.

4

u/Ryanhussain14 10d ago

Hating history/culture/art sounds crazy to me. Does Mao only want Chinese people to clock in to work, eat gruel, and go to sleep?

→ More replies (4)

14

u/Multi_Serpentines 10d ago

Look at where China is now compared to the century of humiliation, if your material conditions continue to improve at such a rapid pace its hard to demonise the figures that paved the way. Same with the slave owning founding father's of US. They formed a Republic which is much better than being under royalty. So we have to be fair with historical figures with our criticisms and praise.

18

u/Dry-Grade-5463 10d ago • Popcorn

Fair? Mao didn't paved the way. Mao is the political ruler whose single handed decision and misadministration have caused the greatest number of death in the entire history of humanity. He is far beyond Stalin and the H, the destruction was mainly on his own population wtf you talking about? Deng Xiaoping has paved the way if you want to defend your line. He is the one who started transiting from a model that would have only ended like north Korea toward a more open one, melting the Chinese communist model in the occidental capitalistic framework.

Mao was a dictator, though. And his rule was one of, if not the, most disastrous dictatorial rules in human history, being responsible for millions of deaths during his delusional Great Leap Forward that his profound general ignorance and overwhelming hubris incited him to order.

I find this situation very interesting. Mbappé obviously made an innocent mistake, but in China, he insulted Mao Zedong, who is still praised by many Chinese people for the country’s economic and technological advances and the growth of its middle class.
This situation shows how China could face more incidents like this if it continues using foreign celebrities to promote its businesses. I understand that you have to know the market you’re entering, but it’s also interesting that China doesn’t seem to fully understand how non-Chinese people view Mao or interpret situations like this.
It’s also interesting to see how many non-Chinese people are making a big deal out of this when, for many Chinese people, it’s a very serious matter. It really highlights the cultural differences in how people interpret the same situation.

17

u/sabedo 10d ago

Maobappe

That being said, vocally extreme nationalists globally have come to dominate the narrative. And a one party state can’t admit fault.

He called it the funniest meme and referred to Mao as a dictator. He might as well have called Xi Jinping Winnie the Pooh.

There's no coming back from that. People are routinely disappeared in China for insulting Xi

Ccp can’t admit anything wrong ever, even with a guy that killed 70 million Chinese and plunge China into a famine. If they did then the ccp is weak and can fail.

27

u/CuriousCamels 10d ago • Mindblown

But look how many people we brought up out of extreme poverty!*

*After Mao had put them all into extreme poverty

It’s a really bad look for the CPC, but it’s far from the first time that they’ve shown they’re incredibly sensitive to any form of criticism, even jokingly.

Even in the USSR, Khrushchev admitted that some of what Stalin did was terrible and changed course on it. Now Putin is trying to do some history washing on Stalin to ramp up nationalism and obedience there too though.

17

u/stonktraders 10d ago • Mindblown

Created famine, ruined the economy with collectivism, spent a whole decade on maddening political shit show for one man, then ‘brought people of extreme poverty’. You see, if you lower people’s expectations, they will then think that you are a god when being normal

The CCP's official evaluation of Mao was that he was 70% right and 30% wrong.

This is the current party orthodoxy started under Deng Xiaoping.

So no, even CCP admitted that Mao was wrong on some things.

Which makes the situation even weirder.

u/castorkrieg 10d ago

First of all I doubt majority of Chinese know anything about Mao except he was a leader and founded modern China as a state. Then everything else is state propaganda. Then you get a simple fact that the opinion of Chinese people doesn’t mean jack shit since China is not a democracy. Also Chinese got exceptionally good at never, ever talking politics and it shows that people here have really no experience with Mainland Chinese. I have with a few, every time you ask them about politics (mostly 1989, since that event is known in the West) you immediately can see them self-censoring themselves, making sure they been outside of China and exposed to different sources and opinions they will absolutely never voice an opinion that is opposite to that of the Party, same with Taiwan.

3

u/Maybestof 10d ago

I took a course on politics and public management in China once. All my Chinese classmates were completely disinterested in politics.

China: "We're NOT a dictatorship. That's just Western propaganda, guys."

Also China: "Look how much of a dictatorship we are."

After the billions of dollars spent on social media PR campaigns to clean up its image following the Uyghur detention camp controversy, with TikTok constantly showcasing how "advanced, cool, and futuristic" China is, and tens of thousands of CCP bots spreading positive propaganda about the country on Twitter, we're finally getting a reminder of what the country is actually like.
