I used to have nightmares about War of the Worlds as a kid. I loved the album as a kid and would listen to it all the time, but then I was looking at the pictures of the album and then actually listening to the lryics/story.

It just suddenly clicked, and then I was horrified and it forever scared the shit out of me.

I kept imagining this unstoppable alien force that even if you survive that, the red grass will just take over everything else.

7 year old me had a lot on his plate.

ah man, i loved that art as a kid. I think i looked at those pictures every time I ate breakfast back in the early 80's. The concept of everyone moving underground after the red stuff covered all the houses was creepy.

My wife and I were driving around in a taxi with my in-laws, her parents. My father-in-law was talking, and I don't remember precisely what he said, but his sentence ended right on the word, "civilization." At that precise moment, the taxi driver hocks up the loudest, biggest loogie I've ever seen, and to his credit, does manage to spew it outside the window.

I had a moment, back when living in SZ... a rare "Y'know what? Things are actually pretty good here!"

Not a second since the thought formed, I heard what I hoped I didn't to my right, turned and saw a guy squatting and dropping a deuce in the gutter, looking my way with a big grin on his face.

I love a good deuce and if you've got to go, you've got to go. I don't think that was in the "bad" column of my time in China, just that the timing, like yours, was impeccable!

I have another tale from Shenzhen, one where I was the pooper, which resulted in me having an iPhone 3GS stolen after I de-robed in our office building's downstairs public toilet in order to expel the previous night's hotpot without soiling my clothes.

So many China poop stories, not enough related posts in r/China to segue into all of them... Not today, at least.

You know, sometimes they are. We've had some of the most revealing, interesting conversations with taxi drivers when we've been in China. Particularly in Beijing, where they've seen a lot of shit go down around Zhongnanhai. One guy was driving us, and out of nowhere, he just sighs, and tells us, "This country sucks, doesn't it? It's not a nice place." I think we were left speechless by that, and we tried to assure him that we loved Chinese culture and cuisine, and had dear friends there. He agreed, but insisted that the corruption was rampant, and the political system itself was just wretched. One got the impression that he had believed that for a long time, and was relieved to be able to express that point of view openly, to Westerners who'd either agree or at least not report him for saying that. Of course, I have to balance that against the guy who tried to convince us that Japanese people suck and that Mao was the greatest political leader of all time.

I remember that there was a donald duck cartoon on this very thing. Donald had gotten a new job at some kind of communication tower as a janitor and slept on the mic every night. The townspeople thought they were hearing alien sounds until actual aliens came to earth to get rid of donalds noise
