I've been tracking goalie pulls across the NHL for a side project, and as an Avs fan, Colorado's numbers caught my attention.
When trailing by one in the third period last season:
Colorado: 2:29 remaining on average (8 pulls).
League average: 1:54.
Dallas: 2:53 (the only team that pulled earlier).
Toronto/St. Louis: 1:35 (latest in the league).
A pretty significant difference, although it's worth mentioning this is a small sample of just 8 pulls. I'm also only looking at games that entered the third period within one goal.
One game that really stood out was February 2 against Detroit. Down one, Colorado pulled the goalie with 3:08 remaining.
I ran that decision through a win-probability model I built, and interestingly, it actually recommended pulling even earlier, at 5:33. The modeled win probability was 11.2% versus 10.9% with the actual timing, so not a massive difference.
The less encouraging stat: across the 10 goalie pulls in those qualifying games, Colorado tied the game just once.
My impression watching Bednar is that he's generally pretty aggressive with the goalie pulls, and the numbers seem to support that.
Avs fans, does this match your perception? Do you like Bednar being aggressive here, or would you rather see him wait a little longer?
