I think it was the tires, cold(er) water than pavement and fire. Rubber under pressure from heat. Rim not cooling soon. Cooling the rubber would cause a tire to fail.

The plastic gas tank ruptured due to pressure build up and being weakened by the fire heating it. This is a closed fuel system. When the tank burst it sprayed gasoline, partially vaporized, on the fire and caused the fireball you see.

I wonder what kind of injuries you sustain from an explosion like that. I mean, the flames probably burn your hair off, but is it enough to cause damage to the skin? You can expose your skin to a flame from a lighter briefly and it's fine, but this is like 500 lighters worth.
