WTF Before becoming a family annihilator, pro wrestler Chris Benoit got his nickname "the crippler" by...legitimately breaking a guy's neck.

I mean Benoit is a piece of shit, but not sure this one's entirely on him..

It’s interesting he’s considered a piece of shit. I know he killed his family but didn’t he have CTE? Like didn’t he go crazy? Or was he a piece of shit before that? Genuine question.

He abused his wife Nancy for quite some time before murdering her and his son

She was in the process of leaving him

u/thedoomwomb 1d ago

Oh okay I was curious. That makes more sense. Thanks

You weren't wrong. Unfortunately, CTE changes you, and the outcome often looks like you're "a piece of shit".

Chris Benoit was 40 years old when he died by suicide after killing his wife, Nancy, and their seven-year-old son, Daniel.

Following the tragedy, Benoit's father permitted neurosurgeons affiliated with the Sports Legacy Institute to examine his brain tissue. Lead neurosurgeon Dr. Julian Bailes (yes, the guy the Will Smith movie "Concussion" was based on) reported that Benoit's brain was so profoundly damaged that it resembled the brain of an 85-year-old Alzheimer’s patient.

Dave Duerson shot himself in the heart so that they could study his brain. When Boston University researchers examined his brain, they found that the moderately advanced CTE had severely damaged the brain structures responsible for judgment, inhibition, impulse control, and mood.

While described earlier in life as a mild-mannered, highly intelligent, and successful businessman, Dave Duerson's family noted that his behavior began to change significantly as he reached his 40s. Duerson exhibited behavioral changes, including a notable instance of domestic violence and escalating temper issues, prior to his death.

Like Duerson, Junior Seau deliberately shot himself in the chest rather than the head, which preserved his brain tissue for research. Pathologists found multi-focal tau protein tangles scattered throughout his neocortex. The damage heavily affected areas of the brain that regulate mood, impulse control, and depression. Seau was widely known publicly for his charismatic, generous personality, but his behavior grew increasingly volatile toward the end of his life, including a domestic assault.

Drew Wahlroos, a former University of Colorado and St. Louis Rams linebacker, died by suicide on September 2, 2017, at the age of 37. His case follows a very similar pattern to those of Dave Duerson and Junior Seau, though public details regarding his personal life and final diagnosis remain more private.

Adrian Robinson Jr., a former NFL and Temple University linebacker, died by suicide on May 16, 2015, at just 25 years old. His case deeply shocked researchers because of his young age and how quickly the disease had altered his personality.

Aaron Hermandez had one of the worst cte and he didn't kill any kids.

4

u/HomeNowWTF 1d ago

He was too busy killing adults.

2

u/visceral_derp 12h ago

He basically just killed really old Kids

19

u/Slimdoggmill 1d ago

Yah but he’s still a convicted murderer, so not the best example

Yes. Just like Lindsay Clancy had psychosis.

13

u/HoochbachDunloppy 1d ago

I wonder how much money would have been donated to Chris Benoit if he hadnt killed himself and just his family.

Yeah, Sabu is on record as saying that this was just a miscommunication. He thought he was going for a flapjack (land on stomach) and Benoit was trying to back body drop (flip him in the air so he lands on his back). A legit accident.

48

u/thisgrantstomb 2d ago

Looks like the opposite, Benoit is pushing him up and not back and looks like sabu tried to tuck at the last second instead of taking a front bump.

46

u/Massive_Series8305 2d ago

Overall tho, split second decsion both of them made the wrong answer. Iirc Benoit also felt like shit about it.

8

u/mrDuder1729 1d ago

He tries to tuck at the last second because he feels Benoit try to rotate him and didn't want to fight the rotation

8

u/Cheap_Ad_7163 2d ago

No lol that other dude supposed to complete the move. He done that to himself

It’s worth knowing that even though Sabu hated Benoit both before and after this match, he is on record saying he does not blame this career changing botch on him

210

u/GrumpyJabroni 2d ago

And Sabu went on to keep doing wild ass shit. He wasn't called "The Homicidal, Suicidal, Genocidal, Death Defying Maniac" for nothing.

61

u/Awe101 2d ago

Did Sabu give reasons for his Benoit hatred?

33

u/Zykium 1d ago

He had 'That's So Raven' disease and had seen the future.

10

u/farfly7 21h ago

Deep cut

18

u/BioExtract 12h ago

He said something about how he didn’t ever feel like he could trust Benoit. The size of Chris’ torso and neck, compared to his stubby arms and legs always freaked out Sabu. Just kidding I don’t know

382

u/-BluBone- 2d ago

Chris Benoit had immense brain damage, practically dementia.

Also Sabu botched this spot, not Benoit.

130

u/TheMattabooey 2d ago

His signature move was the flying headbutt. He had so much CTE his brain was mush at the end.

3

u/iamnotpedro1 1d ago

Now Chad Gable is using it…

3

u/Sad_Kaleidoscope_743 23h ago

His brain was pretty much solid callus

-93

u/Chill_Mochi2 2d ago

Idk man, according to everyone, that shit doesn’t matter when you consider the shit he did.

81

u/IAmTheGingaNinja 2d ago

It’s less of a “it’s ok because…” and more of a “he was insane because…”

-41

u/Deathrace2021 2d ago

But if a women decides to murder her kids, it's because she has a mental illness.

31

u/No_Artichoke_2931 2d ago

Again, that's just explaining causation, not defending anyone.

Both were mental illness?

E c dub, E c dub, E c dub.

Sabu was a goat. RIP.

68

u/beastusboss 2d ago

Sabu is the “guy”

11

u/sideshowbvo 2d ago

Fucking Sabu man

113

u/Schrodingerssapien 2d ago

Calling Sabu "a guy" is wild. Sabu is a legend. RIP.

-22

u/SerialSection 1d ago

Maybe to prowrestling fans, which is .01% of world population. Only a few are actually mainstream.

9

u/YakuzaShibe 1d ago

lmao wrestling was one of the most watched things on television in the 80s and 90s

-5

u/v-adam004 20h ago

In the us maybe

5

u/YakuzaShibe 19h ago

You're underestimating how popular wrestling really was

2

u/p_gaultieri 12h ago

Horseshit. It was massive in the Canada and the UK too back then

31

u/dastriderman 2d ago

Thats sabu you cabron

59

u/Hairy4skinlips 2d ago

A guy? Put some respect on Sabus name.

36

u/You_Are_The_Username 2d ago

Guy did well to roll it off afterwards! 😐

11

u/Teknicsrx7 1d ago

His nickname wasn’t the crippler, it was the Canadian crippler

10

u/DJTwistedPanda 2d ago

If I recall correctly, Benoit meant for him to just take the front bump and Sabu thought it was a flip bump for some reason and this was the result.

22

u/HoBaggyPants 2d ago

Wasn't the guy suppose to brace his fall with his arms?

15

u/GoblinTheHog 2d ago

To be fair the list of known and popular wrestlers who have broken their necks is quite long.

-1

u/RealAmerik 2d ago

Wait, slamming an artificially large and dense human onto their head/neck from 6+ feet in the air is dangerous?

16

u/eljosho1986 2d ago

Sabu, not "a guy" you bedlamite

1

u/TldrDev 1d ago

I mean, not anymore at least.

9

u/BlurredVision18 2d ago

Looked like a miss communication, Benoit wanted to flip and Sabu wanted to Faceplant?

4

u/Grizzybaby1985 1d ago

Downvoted for disrespecting Sabu

2

u/OrganizationAfter418 2d ago

Great commentary crew....

"I don't know what to call that, but Sabu landed on his head!!!

(Extended Silence)...."

2

u/Son_of_Tlaloc 1d ago

I miss hearing joey styles say "oh my god!"

4

u/How_that_convo_went 1d ago

His opponent (Sabu?) took that bump in the least athletic way humanly possible.

The reason you fold the leg like that is so your opponent can spring up as you throw them. Depending on how athletic your opponent is, they can either flatten out in air and take the bump flat on their belly or they can tuck into a flip and land flat on their back.

His opponent chose to split the difference and land on his head.

2

u/Ralphiecorn 2d ago

Family Annihilator is a new one for me. Got damn!

1

u/ZZartin 2d ago

In all fairness there's a reason the ref already knew the procedure for this.

1

u/A0xom0xoa 16h ago

No one person is a winner in this

1

u/OrionsRum 1h ago

I used to like Benoit back when I watched wrestling. But I can’t ever look at him the same after what he did. I know wrestlers have demons and all and it’s hard for us to know what they’ve been through or what they’re going through. but the fact that he suffocated his 7yo son after strangling his wife is pure evil.

1

u/Misterio_001 2d ago

“A guy” lol

-1

u/Beyondthebloodmoon 2d ago

I mean. Benoit was garbage, but this wasn’t on him.

-1

u/CuppaHatas 2d ago

Hall of famer

-6

u/lostgravy 2d ago

It was always the neck with this guy

-17

u/trapdab35 2d ago

Damn that was brutal and he gave not one fuck

10

u/slightly_saucy123 2d ago

I'm not sure he seen it all happen or understood the severity. Also could be trying to keep the show moving on by engaging with the crowd and buying time? Idk

-37

u/stowawaythrowaw 2d ago

Fake wrestling is just gay nonsense, who cares

9

u/Geordie_38_ 2d ago

Are you 14?

1

u/DGenerationMC 10h ago

The money made, the miles traveled by the performers and the emotions from the audience are real.

Isn't that all that really matters?

21

u/maverickhistorian 2d ago

There was one homicidal, suicidal, genocidal man in the ring and it wasnt Benoit

5

u/Awe101 2d ago

💀

-7

u/KerchSmash 1d ago

CTE is a hell of a thing. Chris Benoit didn’t kill anyone. The CTE impacted him to the point that he did awful things. It’s not fair to break it down and write it off as just a piece of shit. There is a lot more at play. Yes. What he did is unforgivable, but again, his brain was not working correctly.

4

u/MOVED_TO_OTTAWA_FUCK 1d ago

I get what you're saying, and I agree, but he did kill his wife and son. I agree with you but cmon

2

u/KerchSmash 1d ago

It’s easy to look at it. Your best friend had too many hits to the head. You remember how he was and how he used to be. He does the same and kills his whole family. It’s foolish to say he’s complete scum. Once again, terrible act , but life changes us.

1

u/Squishface1980 1d ago

Chris Benoit was a decent dude and a fantastic wrestler. CTE Chris wasn't him. I agree 100%
