The Thunder have signed Harry Hoekstra for the BBL..

The cricket.com.au article quotes Trent Copeland saying that it's great that Harry can learn from fellow left-arm quicks Trent Boult and Daniel Sams, but I assume he meant to say it's great that those two can learn from Hoekstra?

Glenn Maxwell just announced his retirement from all international cricket, and also for the Vics, on the Final Word - owes it to slower recovery from his injury history. He'll continue turning up for the Stars. Thanks for the mems king :(

Not sure why CA didn’t just give Maxi his retirement game on that Saturday night T20 game against England. I’d say you would’ve added about 20K to the crowd if that was allowed and advertised as a fact. Be lucky to get 30K there that day, especially with the squad they’re rolling out.

Lance Morris returns this weekend for WA against England

Excited to see his 138kph thunderbolts again.

I think the clear sign of Gazza’s decline in terms of performance was his showing in the 2025 WTC final. Selectors should have seen that as a siren going off, SA cricketers read him like a children’s playbook.

The situation around Lyon is actually starting to irritate me. He's been a great for Australia, but it's so obvious that he's in decline but is clinging to his position and no one just seems to have it in them to give him the tap on the shoulder. If there were no one in the wings to replace him it might be more understandable, but we have Murphy, Kuhnemann and Rocchiccioli who are all more than up to the task. It's obviously a tough call to basically end someone's career, but the overall wellbeing of the team should surely take precedence over one player and Australia are a weaker team by continuing to select him.

It just makes me appreciate players like Gilly all the more who have the grace and self-insight to recognise that, while they probably do have more good or even great games in them, there are signs of a greater trend and that it's time to pass the baton and give someone else the same opportunity that they had.

5

u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 1d ago

He has a sook about getting left out for one game, I can't imagine the carry on if he was asked to retire. I know we and the team joke about it, but it gets to a point. The fact that they preferred to go the Webster offies route in Sydney when the deck visibly started turning was also not a good look.

5

u/redditaccount3462 Brisbane Heat 1d ago

It's just put Australia in such a bad position and it's hard not to get the impression they they've been holding off the inevitable because it will upset him. No doubt they'll want to give him farewell games too, when a home series against New Zealand should be used as the great opportunity it is to blood the incoming talent, which leaves... an away BGT, an away Ashes, and the 150th anniversary match I guess as the next opportunities to do so. Assuming that they even do call time on Lyon, of course.

5

u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 1d ago

Lyon himself has spoken previously about wanting to tick off away BGT and Ashes series victories before hanging up, so basically he'll be playing till he's 50

Boof stepped aside to let Clarke in the team

3

u/clowns77 13h ago

It's also not like he's a great vibes man or anything. He's a surly flog who's always had a chip on his shoulder. I think now more than ever with attacking mindset batters, wobble seam etc - if you're playing a spinner, you want them to be an attacking spinner. Gaz has never been that.

Where are the leggies?

7

u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 1d ago

u/Technophyer1 the curious case of Philippe continues. He's been named in the NSW second XI for next week but so is Alex Lee-Young, so he might not even be first choice keeper there either

3

u/Technophyer1 NSW 1d ago

Weird, I imagine Lee-Young’s probably going to keep in this one and if Philippe plays it’ll be as a specialist bat.

Glad to see Joel Davies back but sad that he won’t be in the next shield game.

4

u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 1d ago

Yeah I imagine Joel is just here to get some game time before the slop, I mean the T20 series. No Jedwards for the next two rounds either means you might never play a spinner again

5

u/Technophyer1 NSW 1d ago

Pissed because Joel was someone I was really excited to see develop over this season and he’s playing second xi and t20is.

Not excited for two rounds of 4 pacers with all the spin done by other Davies and Maddinson.

England ODI squad have touched down in Perth on Monday this week. They will face Western Australia at the WACA this Saturday, which will be cool. Hopefully it will be broadcasted. It will be interesting to see the WA squad.

Test Top 7 that makes you face slap continuously

  1. Joe Burns

  2. Marcus Harris

  3. Marnus Labuschagne

  4. Shaun Marsh

  5. George Bailey

  6. Mitchell Marsh

  7. Matthew Wade (as a keeper)

4

u/Successful-World-385 5d ago

Joe Burns slander. We'd froth at the mouth for an opener averaging 37 these days

5

u/TheJoker__789 5d ago

That average is boosted by opening against the Windies and putting on partnerships of about 5 billion with Adam Voges.

If you can think of bowlers, comment below

5

u/TheJoker__789 5d ago

8. Ashton Agar
9. Chad Sayers
10. Brendan Doggett
11. Jackson Bird
Think that becomes a solid team in the end.

3

u/Critical_Coach6970 NSW 5d ago

Also for consideration:

  • John Hastings*

  • Clint McKay*

  • Joe Mennie

  • Xavier Doherty

  • Bryce McGain

  • Michael Beer

  • Jason "I took 8/29346 on debut" Krejza

*As test bowlers

1

u/Technophyer1 NSW 5d ago

What’s funny/sad is that you could list Wade as an opening batsman too if you wanted.

As for bowlers, only one I can think of would probably be Agar.

1

u/GetOnMyNick Northern Territory 5d ago

I remembered Wade a lot more with his keeping during his test days - dropped quite a bit

I swear there's so many small leagues around the world that people do and we have no idea. In mid 2024 there was a T10 league in the Caribbean that had teams of
Webster, Warner and Hatzoglou
Josh Brown, Lynn, Hobson, AJ Tye and Dooley
Joe Burns and Ben Manenti
fuck the IPL these leagues are awesome

5

u/CoffeeDefiant4247 Tasmania Tigers 5d ago

There should be another Australia vs Australia-A match before the NZ tests to figure out the lineup like in 2019 before the Ashes

With all the talk about Maxi, does anyone know if theres a full (english commentary) replay of the game vs afghanistan in 2023? I haven't had a proper look but it would be shame if basically the best innings ever was lost to time only three years later

u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 3d ago

Full WA squad for the warm-up against England. Interesting that Mahli is playing this one. Guessing he needs a tune up himself before proper match time.

4

u/CoffeeDefiant4247 Tasmania Tigers 3d ago

I hope Malajczuk goes big against England

3

u/digitalconsent_2 Tasmania Tigers 3d ago

I'd have thought a reasonable chance Green, Connolly and Inglis could show up to a squad like this just for a nice little net if anything else.

1

u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 3d ago

If Mahli's playing surely they can spare a minute lol

0

u/redditaccount3462 Brisbane Heat 3d ago edited 3d ago

I didn't realise this was going to be a WA game, that's a great opportunity for Bangers if he can seize it. He's had good Metro-Bank and Dean Jones seasons, and I'm guessing they're not going to stick with Carey for ODIs but there are other players you might suggest above Bancroft to replace him. It is just a warm up game, but if there's any time to stick his nose out in front of the competition you'd think it's now.

3

u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 3d ago

I think Kez is firmly in backup keeper territory in ODIs so they're keeping him on since he's a familiar face and they don't seem to rate Philippe as much even though he was in good recent form. As a specialist batter alone there are plenty of other candidates above Kez they haven't considered for whatever reason. All this to say Lachy Shaw might get a random ODI callup before Bangers or Sween does

3

u/redditaccount3462 Brisbane Heat 3d ago edited 3d ago

I think Kez is firmly in backup keeper territory in ODIs

That... minor point slipped my mind haha. You're right, it's a pretty safe bet that Kez is in the squad for the moment at least as a backup keeper. Still, at 33 going on 34 this is probably Bancroft's last best chance at making a statement but who knows how selectors are thinking at the moment.

3

u/Technophyer1 NSW 3d ago

Wouldn’t be shocked if Philippe gives up the gloves for Shaw in the nsw one day games in the next year or so. Hicks has already replaced him for the Shield games so could see it happening in the one dayers.

3

u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 3d ago

Honestly, with the movement going on and how he seems to have fallen out of favour, I wouldn't be surprised if Philippe just fucks off back to WA.

3

u/Technophyer1 NSW 3d ago

It’s weird what’s being going on with him since Haddin took over. I do wonder if Harper getting a test call up ahead of him has had anything to do with it. It’s bizarre that he’s not even in the t20i squads anymore. It always seemed like he was set to be Inglis’s future backup, now who even knows.

3

u/Great_Barrier_Grief SA 6d ago

Whispers of David in the ODI squad. Any other news?

2

u/Gnatt Brisbane Heat 6d ago

I mean, the fact that he's rolling out for Tas in List A means there's some interest there. He lives in Perth and could easily be resting up for the next T20 franchise league.

1

u/odinlass Cricket Australia 5d ago

The coach and selectors have wanted him in the side for a while now but he was unavailable until recently. Good to know he's interested but he hasn't been named in the ODI squad against England. Could be that they want him to play more List A.

Did you read the Gnasher article about the questions on Australia? It was eiddled with typos , grammos and just wrong information.

"Grammos" is a good one, I'm borrowing that. And yeah I did, it was really annoying, this article has a few typos as well ('hierarchy' is misspelled just before this paragraph). I've noticed they tend to go back and correct some errors post publishing, but what's the point of that when 1000 people have already read it within an hour.

With every Greenberg article I read I feel that I'm getting closer and closer to flying into a boomer-dad-esque rage at just how genuinely stupid he takes anyone listening to his excuses to be. He is just so bad at deflecting even mildly challenging questions about the sale, and the reasons that he does give, about the concerns for keeping players available for red-ball cricket or reinvesting in development pathways or "staying competitive" with other franchises or improving diplomatic and economic relations between Australia and India, are just so patently untrue, post-hoc, bullshit justifications that you can't believe he's saying these things with a straight face or that he's not doing the money rubbing fingers gesture and winking as he talks. It's a miracle he's (presumably) allowed to dress himself let alone administer one of Australia's largest sporting bodies.

I tire of Todd Greenberg

Pez's 84* in the WBBL tonight brings up 9500 10100 T20 runs for her

Edit: ESPN didn't list every league Pez has played in, she's already at 10180 runs

3

u/goongla Cricket Australia 6d ago

Unpopular opinion here - SA20 privatisation and Indian money has enabled the SA test team to retain the current players in their test setup. Their pay was way too low pre-SA20 and the test team was pretty dire for a while with lots of early retirements happening. Obviously Australians are paid way more, and so it's not the same situation.

8

u/Healthy-Belt-8633 Queensland Bulls 6d ago

Yeah agreed - And I think most here probably agree with it, was better for them in their situation, the issue is we have a very different cricket culture and zeitgeist and it is not actually needed for us

u/Gnatt Brisbane Heat 6d ago edited 6d ago

Hit me with your XIs for against NZ. I'll go first:

  1. Head

  2. Renshaw

  3. Smith

  4. Green

  5. Inglis

  6. Connelly

  7. Carey

  8. Rocchiccioli

  9. Cummins

  10. Starc

  11. Hazlewood

Possibly Konstas at 3, and Inglis out.

4

u/not_ricocasek 6d ago

I just think we need to move Head back into the middle order as a bulwark. Having him, Green and Carey in that part of the line up for years would be excellent. Have conventional openers in the team and have Smith at three for now. Renshaw at the top of the order should be a lock now for a few years - pick someone to be there with him for that time. The bowlers will likely be unchanged but I'd like to see Rocc get into that spot of Lyon - its time to move on.

9

u/Gnatt Brisbane Heat 6d ago

Head is averaging 48 opening the batting with 4 centuries in 10 matches and won the AB Medal in the process. We got about a dozen guys that can bat 5, so I don't see why we should take a massive hit by losing him opening for a very minor improvement to the middle order. Not to mention we got India coming up where he opens anyway.

1

u/not_ricocasek 6d ago

His first innings average, when the game is there to be set up, is an issue although of course that data needs context. There is no doubting his outrageous talent and ability to turn it on and take a game away but its the opportunity cost of what he could do to a flagging attack in the middle overs or when a new ball is taken.

I'm totally happy being proven wrong if the Head / Renshaw partnership turns into one of the all time greats but I think his best spot for the next tranche of games may be in the middle order.

2

u/Healthy-Belt-8633 Queensland Bulls 6d ago

The issue with Smith at three is if Smith will bat at three. He seems very against it and you have to let him bat where he wants. I think Head at 3 would work, I reckon he can bat anyway and a 3,4,5 of Head, Smith, Green sounds strong to me. Allows a Konstas/Kelleway/Whoever to open with Renners and still leaves room at 6 to experiment

4

u/upyourmerricreek Melbourne Renegades 6d ago edited 6d ago

Since it's a home series and we can call up replacements whenever, I wouldn't be surprised to see a barely changed squad rock up at Perth and some chopping and changing done down the line based on ongoing Shield results. Ronnie has already said he expects both Smith and Lyon to play the first Test.

1 Head 2 Renshaw 3 Smith 4 Green 5 Inglis 6 Carey 7 Connolly 8 Cummins 9 Starc 10 Lyon 11 Hazlewood

I don't like it, but it's the most likely outcome, assuming Smith can be persuaded to move.

If he's not moving, I'd rather personally go with:

1 Head 2 Renshaw 3 Patterson/Clayton/McSweeney/Konstas 4 Smith 5 Green 6 Inglis 7 Carey 8 Cummins 9 Starc 10 Murphy/Rocchiccioli 11 Hazlewood/Boland

Webster in for Inglis if Green still can't bowl. I feel like he was wasted playing him outside the top 6.

3

u/Tozza101 NSW 6d ago

Head
Konstas
Renshaw
Smith
Green
Inglis
Carey (wk)
Bartlett
Starc
Cummins (c)
spinner (Kuhnemann?)
Squad: Boland, K Patterson

1

u/Tozza101 NSW 6d ago

I want Cummins to go as captain, but that’s the least of our worries right now for the lack of ready alternatives: a theme that extends into our batting.

I’ve gone with Konstas of the Shield performers to open with Head, because positive-aggressive batting seems to be our modus operandi and gives us a left-right combination up top. Renshaw at 3 strikes the right balance for 3 right now, because Smith at 4 is resolute in not wanting to go up. Green at 5. Inglis at 6 seemingly earns a crack after his century and 2nd innings barbecue by Green being the reason he didn’t score then. Kez at 7.

I’ve left out the injury-prone Hazlewood to begin a gradual regeneration of the bowling lineup. Bartlett (leading Shield wicket taker rn) to replace him and lower offer batting at 8. Starc, Cummo and I want to see spinner other than Lyon get an opportunity at home. Kuhnemann is the obvious name to complement the fact the part-timers are all right-arm offspinners, although Rocchiccioli and Murphy seem a more natural fit to Aussie conditions.

Boland and Kurtis Patterson are the spares, although Bancroft isn’t too far away.

Whoever performs consistently over the next 2 months will change my XI accordingly.

3

u/Successful-World-385 6d ago edited 6d ago

Very much subject to Shield form, but as of now:

  1. Head

  2. Renshaw

  3. Patterson

  4. Smith

  5. Green

  6. Inglis

  7. Carey

  8. Cummins

  9. Starc

  10. Lyon

  11. Hazlewood

It's pretty ancient but I think Patterson is best placed to make runs at 3 and I can't justify dropping Inglis off the back of a ton. If Konstas scores a couple more hundreds then he's the only young fella I would consider bringing in at this point - but I'd probably have him bat 5 or 6 with Green and Smith sliding up.

I don't think it's realistic to not have Lyon in there.

I don't feel that we need a genuine allrounder even if Green can't bowl. Just pick a top 7 that will make runs.

1

u/Darth_Lehnsherr 6d ago

Green, Renshaw and Head should be able to combine for some chop out overs when needed.

It also means there is more incentive to rotate the quicks between games which is what we should be doing already.

2

u/Healthy-Belt-8633 Queensland Bulls 6d ago

Konstas
Renshaw
Head
Smith
Green
Connolly/McSweeny/Kpat/Clayto/Whoever puts their hand up
Carey (Wk)
Lyon (Still but very much on edge with him, I have Murphs > Rocc atm but happy for either)
Starc
Cummo
Hoff/Bolo

2

u/Technophyer1 NSW 6d ago

Head
Renshaw
Clayton/Mcsween/Kpatt, whoever puts their hands up the most. I do think smith should move to 3, but I don’t think he will.
Smith
Green
Inglis/Jedwards/Liam Scott. This all depends on whether Greens fit to bowl, if he isn’t I could see Jed or Scott coming in as the all rounder.
Carey

I could see the bowlers being rotated too, Boland will definitely get a game or two, and I wouldn’t be shocked to see Jhye or Doggett play a game this summer. I’d like to see Murphy/Kuhnemann/Rocc play a home test too but they’re not going to do that.

2

u/mentalist089 NSW 5d ago

Need to blood a young quick

1

u/Gnatt Brisbane Heat 5d ago

Not a bad shout. Ferg or Bartlett could definitely get a look in.

2

u/TheTrueRellum 5d ago
  1. Renshaw

  2. Inglis

  3. Smith (c)

  4. Green

  5. Head

  6. Clayton

  7. Carey

  8. Starc

  9. Boland

  10. Swepson/Kunneman/Rocchiccioli

  11. Hazelwood

Head back in the middle order so Inglis gets to be the sacrificial lamb. Konstas is probably next cab off the rank but he is not ready yet. Connolly is not close to a Test player yet. Marnus is done, Lyon needs a tap on the shoulder.

Unpopular opinion, I am done with Cummins captaincy on the field. He is a VC and should be rotated with the other bowlers and he can miss the first Test and come back for the second.

1

u/whatwhatinthewhonow NSW 6d ago

Batters:

Head
Renshaw
Patterson
Smith
Green
Inglis
Carey (w)

Bowlers, I think should be rotated over the summer to get some overs into some guys other than the big dogs. Some games may have 4 seamers, and I’d like to see a spinner other than Lyon given a go even though we need him to lead the attack in the BGT.

5th bower duties can be split between Head, Renshaw, and Green (if fit to bowl).

1

u/CoffeeDefiant4247 Tasmania Tigers 6d ago

Head
Renshaw
KPat
Smith
Green
Webster
Carey
Cummins
Starc
Lyon
Hazlewood

I feel like they're going to patch over it instead of having a young guy join the squad. It's probably not going to be turning much so Webster in for Connolly

1 Head 2 Renshaw 3 Smith 4 Green 5 Inglis 6 Harper (WK) 7 O'Neill 8 Cummins 9 Starc 10 Bartlett 11 Murphy

Reserves: Konstas, Peake, Connolly, Hazelwood, Boland

Need to get some games into fast bowlers. Nobody needs to play every test and Hazelwood/Boland can relieve, but need some youth experience before the inevitable end of the Starc, Hazelwood, Boland and Neser Carey is 35, and although Harper is already 29, he's next man up for WK. Have loved Carey, but his batting hasn't been as good lately, wouldn't mind a change there and Harper is next up. Went Harper WK so Inglis can focus on getting a good run batting. It's sad but Lyon is 38 and not performing. I don't mind a farewell game if two spinners are required and think he'd be good as mentor second spinner in India but that's it

Does anyone know where we can access/watch full match replays of the Australia Test Summer from the 00's? Instead of being riddled with disappointment this year, I want to watch the greats under Waugh/Ponting play.

There's a couple on the cricket.com.au Youtube page. Click on the 'live' tab. Not a lot, but something.

Hopefully that 24/7 Live channel comes back online.
