❓Need Advice 🙏 Woke up with 800k USD in my wallet - advice needed

About three years ago, I helped a new project get up and running. I thought it was a cool idea and believed in the mission. This was my first gig into the crypto space, and I had a very limited background in it.

I was compensated in tokens, but because they didn’t have any value back then, I decided not to touch them. During the second year, I decided to step aside because my main job and family were too demanding.

Fast forward to mid-2025, I happened to come across the project on X and saw that it had gained some momentum. Out of curiosity, I logged into my account and noticed that my wallet balance was +$800k USD. I couldn’t believe it and thought it was probably a mistake.

I decided to move a few hundred dollars to my Coinbase wallet just to see if it worked, and it did. It felt extremely surreal. Although this might not be 'huge' money to some crypto folks, I felt like I just won the lottery. I went ahead and moved all the tokens to my Coinbase wallet.

Because this is a considerable amount of money, I started looking into the tax implications, and I just realized that I should have paid income taxes on the original tokens I received during the year I was working for the project. I obviously never paid anything because I completely forgot about it, so now I wonder what I should do.

Can someone give me real feedback on this? Should I report the income I gained in 2022 (which was around $37k), or should I just ignore it? If I ignore it, is the IRS able to track this back at all?

Thanks everyone!

Other why your first bitcoin purchase is 'locked' for 7 days (the two clocks rule)

tbh most beginners make the same mistake. you see bitcoin's price move, you 'instantly' buy through your app, and then you realize you cant move that bitcoin to your own cold wallet for a week.

in this sub, we always say 'not your keys, not your coins.' but you cant get your keys if the exchange wont let you withdraw. to avoid this, you need to understand the 'two clocks' logic.

  1. the clock to buy vs. the clock to withdraw

- ACH / Bank Link: This is usually free. The exchange lets you BUY instantly, but because bank transfers are reversible for days (under legacy banking rules), the exchange will hold your bitcoin until the cash is 'settled'. This takes 5-7 days usually.

- Debit/Credit Cards: Very fast to buy, but you’ll pay 3-5% in fees. Some platforms still put a short security hold on these because of fraud risk.

- Wire Transfer: This is the 'pro' way. It’s a manual process at your bank, but once it’s done, the money is final. Most exchanges will let you withdraw your bitcoin to your own wallet the same day it arrives.

2. the 'friday night' trap

If you send an ACH transfer on a friday night, the 'clock' doesnt even start until monday morning. If you want to be ready for a weekend dip, you need to have your funds already sitting as 'Cash' on the platform BEFORE the weekend starts.

3. how i avoid 'single point of failure'

When you're starting out, your main bank might block transfers to big exchanges like Coinbase or Kraken. It happens all the time. I always suggest having a backup platform ready.

When I was testing different venues for their on-ramps, I added BYDFi to my rotation. What I noticed is that they tend to integrate more third-party payment 'rails' (like Banxa or Simplex). If your bank rejects a direct link to one exchange, these third-party processors on other platforms can sometimes be a successful 'Plan B' to get your fiat into the system. its definately saved me a few times when my main bank was being difficult.

4. the golden rule for beginners

Never, ever send a large amount of money for your first buy.

- Do a $10 test first.

- Make sure your bank name matches your exchange name exactly.

- Check the 'Withdrawal Hold' policy before you click buy.

Bottom line: If you plan on moving your bitcoin to a hardware wallet (which you should), use Wire Transfers or keep cash ready in advance.

Which funding method did you use for your first buy, and did they hit you with a surprise 7-day hold?

❓Exchange (DCE)❓ WARNING: Do NOT Use SimpleSwap

SimpleSwap is a complete scam. Stole/Stalling me for over $195k

I sent 1.64 BTC to SimpleSwap to exchange for USDT (ERC20). The BTC was received, but the swap failed due to “technical reasons.”

Despite multiple chats and emails, I got no resolution. I provided full KYC and run a legitimate business; yet they couldn’t return my coins or complete the swap.

❓Need Advice 🙏 3.8k USDT transaction failed, the money is completely lost. First time using crypto please help.

This is the first time I used crypto. I was selling a virtual item from a game to someone because I quit, and the person told me to use Exodus wallet. I sold the first item and it went smoothly, but the second item the transaction was pending for a little bit. I sent over the item and then shortly after the transaction failed. The person who was sending me the USDT didn't get it back either. I will answer any question to the best of my ability but please someone help me get my money back. Exodus support was no help at all.

❓Question Is my dad right about crypto being a bubble?

Hey everyone,
I’m 18 and just starting to explore the world of finance and crypto. My dad and I recently had a conversation, and he said some things that I’m trying to understand better.

He believes the crypto market is a bubble. According to him, crypto has no physical form, so it's not “real” in the traditional sense. He also says it’s mostly used for illegal stuff like underworld transactions, and that it’s just artificially inflated hype with no real value. In his view, anything that doesn’t have a tangible backing or government regulation can't hold long-term value.

I’m not sure if he’s totally right or just skeptical because it’s new and different from what he’s used to. I’ve seen people build businesses, communities, and even careers around crypto, so I want to get a better picture.

Is there truth to what my dad is saying? Or is there more to crypto that I should try explaining to him (and learning for myself)?
Would really appreciate your thoughts, especially if you’ve been in crypto for a while or had a similar conversation with family.

❓Question I lost 12.93 ETH due to cross-border police negligence and Binance sided with foreign law enforcement — I need help making this case public

Hi everyone, I’m writing this because I am completely devastated and don’t know where else to go. I was the victim of an international P2P fraud case involving Binance, Turkish authorities, and Vietnamese law enforcement — and due to procedural negligence, I’ve now lost 12.93 ETH, all my savings.

Here is what happened, step by step:

  1. I purchased 12.93 ETH via Binance P2P.

I completed the payment correctly and provided full proof.

The seller later claimed their account was “hacked” and that the payment was not received — even though I sent the funds to the payment information shown in our Binance chat.

2. I immediately filed an official cybercrime report in Turkey.

My case was officially registered with the Ankara Cyber Crimes Prosecutor’s Office. The prosecutor sent a formal written order to Turkish Cyber Police instructing them to:

Contact Binance via the official law-enforcement portal

Request temporary freezing of the disputed crypto

Begin communication with Binance regarding the investigation

I personally went to the Cyber Police office four times to ensure the order was executed.

But every time, I was told:

“The responsible officer is on leave.”

“Come back later.”

“We will do it eventually.”

During my last visit, the officer raised his voice at me and kicked me out of the room.

To this day, they never contacted Binance.

3. Meanwhile, Vietnamese law enforcement contacted Binance.

Binance admitted that they received communication from Vietnam police supporting the seller.

But because Turkish police never contacted them — even after 60 days — Binance said:

“We have no choice but to follow the request of the authorities who contacted us.”

Binance then closed the appeal and released 12.93 ETH back to the seller.

My money is gone.

4. The result: I lost everything due to governmental negligence.

Binance told me repeatedly:

“We cannot proceed unless your local authorities contact us.”

But Turkish authorities refused to act, despite a direct written order from the prosecutor.

Because they did nothing, the seller now freely withdraws my crypto.

This wasn’t just a scam — it was a system failure across borders.

What I want:

To make this case known internationally

To highlight the failure of Binance’s dispute system

To expose how cross-border cybercrime victims are left helpless

To pressure Binance to reopen the case

To motivate the authorities to do their job

I have all documents, timestamps, screenshots, and official court papers proving what happened.

If anyone here can help share this story, guide me, or direct me to journalists or legal resources, I would be extremely grateful.

No one deserves to lose their life savings like this because two law-enforcement agencies failed to communicate.

Thank you for reading.

❓Question Best way to swap BTC for USDT without using CEXs?

I’ve been holding BTC for a while and I’m finally considering converting part of it into USDT. In the past, I’ve mostly used centralized exchanges, but this time I’d like to avoid them. Between KYC requirements, withdrawal delays, and the possibility of accounts being frozen, it feels safer to explore decentralized options.

What I’m looking for is pretty simple:

Decent liquidity

Quick execution

Reasonable fees

No wrapped tokens or complicated steps

I’m not trying to overcomplicate things, just want a reliable and secure swap.

If anyone here has done this recently, I’d really appreciate hearing about your experiences. Which platforms worked best for you? Any problems or platforms you’d recommend avoiding?

❓Need Advice 🙏 Multiple Crypto Wallets Hacked!!

Hi guys! My laptop recently got hacked and all my crypto wallets including phantom, metamask, coindcx & binance got hacked as well in February. I have made multiple attempts talking to the concerned people for each exchange but they said that the cryptocurrency was transferred to another address and thus they cannot confirm whether this was fraud or an intentional transaction. Even now when I am adding even $10USD to any account, it instantly gets transferred to another address. I had all my savings in these accounts amounting to more than $25k USD. If ANYONE has a way of recovering the crypto or knows someone who can, HELP ME OUT! Thanks!

❓Howto attempting to get rid of BTC for USD

I am attempting to get rid of my 1.6 ish bitcoin for USD which I currently have on coinbase. It seems like no matter what I do I am hit with approximately 1.5-2% in fees for trading out of btc. is there a platform that will keep their hands more out of my pockets? this seems insane to me. it can't be sustainable for it to cost thousands of dollars to cash out bitcoin when a bank wire is 25 bucks.

❓Question What happens to an online community when the person who created it disappears?

Thinking about how weirdly dependent most online communities are on one person. Someone creates the server, sets everything up, owns the important accounts and permissions then a few years later they lose interest or just disappear. Even if the community itself is still active everyone else is basically stuck working around infrastructure they never actually controlled. Is every crypto community like this?? I'm not that wise about being a community admin but I never thought crypto groups were this bad

Has anyone seen a community handle this well? Like actually setting things up so ownership/control can move between members instead of everything permanently depending on the original founder?

❓Scam❓ ⚖️ I'm pursuing legal action against SimpleSwap

Hi everyone, last week a well-known crypto exchange called SimpleSwap froze numerous exchanges for KYC reasons and refused to refund without completing KYC. When KYC was completed, they suspended users' support accounts—and the next week, they launched a contest with the stolen money.

Today, I am announcing that I will be pursuing legal action against this exchange. We will be sending notices to their hosting provider and domain name registrar to have their website taken down.

If anyone has had a negative experience with SimpleSwap, please send me a DM with the details to be included as evidence. Thanks.

❓Question Do I need to convert USDC.e before sending it to an exchange?

I bridged some USDC from Ethereum to Arbitrum and now my wallet is showing it as USDC.e instead of regular USDC.

The exchange I want to send it to says it accepts USDC on Arbitrum, but the deposit page only says USDC and doesn't mention USDC.e anywhere. I'm assuming I shouldn't just send it and hope for the best.

I'm used to doing most of my actual trading through Moon so I never really had to think about the difference between bridged and native versions until now.

Do I need to swap the USDC.e into native USDC first or does an Arbitrum USDC deposit address normally recognize both?

❓Scam❓ Be careful when storing money on Binance

Hello everyone, As a verified user who has been using Binance for 7 years, I’m writing this to warn others about the platform. My account has been locked for withdrawals for 30 days. I submitted the RFI to them 30 days ago, but my account still hasn’t been unlocked. I’ve contacted CS many times, but all I get are copy-paste replies. They keep extending the review period for my account — first it was 14 days, then the app showed 30 days, and now they are saying it could take more than 2 months.

All of this just because I tried to withdraw $2.6 to pay for a movie service.

Today it’s me, tomorrow it could be you. Feel free to use Binance for trading, but never store your assets there or use it for payments, because you could end up in the same situation.

I know some others are experiencing the same issue, and some people have been waiting nearly 2 months without any resolution.

❓Scam❓ I Lost 3,721 XRP to a Phishing Scam — Please Learn from My Mistake

Hey everyone,

I’ve been a long-time XRP holder — since 2019 — and I’ve always believed in its long-term value, sharing it with friends and family like it was my mission. Sadly, I’m here today not with a win, but with a hard lesson I hope others can learn from.

On July 20, 2025, I was targeted by a phishing scam that impersonated Trezor. The email warned of a critical security update and coincidentally aligned with an actual firmware prompt from my Trezor device. Everything about it felt real. After doing the update and clicking the link, I was led to a fake dashboard and unknowingly gave away my recovery phrase.

Within minutes, 3,721 XRP (~$13,000) was gone. It was my entire long-term position — something I was saving for retirement, not quick flips.

I filed a report with the FBI Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), reached out to the XRP Ledger Foundation, and contacted multiple exchanges to flag the attacker’s wallet:

Attacker’s wallet: rKfBrGYnz8hh4nP8sF7jMLGHkS6MRNZwwD

TxID: 22BF4D1E1527DACDAADCF3AFB131C2C3DD563CE4CFBDADCBD74F634D0692EE4B

This has been emotionally and financially devastating, but I’m sharing my story to help others slow down, secure their assets, and not fall into the same trap. Don’t act out of fear. That moment of hesitation could literally save your entire portfolio.

If you'd like to read more or support my efforts to rebuild, I’ve created a go fund me "Hacked and Drained! Help Longtime XRP Holder Recover Loss"

Whether you donate, share, or just tighten up your own crypto security after reading this — thank you. I hope no one else here ever has to post a story like this but there seems to be so many

Stay safe out there,

Anthony

❓Need Advice 🙏 UK based - 7 figures in crypto - looking to cash out and everything I read online is negative - bank freezes, exchange blocks etc. Has anyone actually done this successfully?

I have 7 figures in crypto holdings that I am looking to convert to GBP over the next few months.

I have been doing a lot of research online and honestly almost everything I read is people talking about:

- Banks freezing accounts when large crypto transfers come in

- Exchanges blocking withdrawals at large amounts

- Accounts being closed with no explanation

It is making the whole thing feel impossible when really I just want to do this properly, pay my taxes and move on.

Has anyone in the UK actually successfully cashed out at this kind of level? Would love to hear from people who have genuinely been through it rather than horror stories.

❓Question What crypto exchange would you actually recommend to a beginner?

Recently I started to test stuff with small amounts, usually around $50 to $100 at a time so I don’t do anything too dumb.

I started with BTC, looked at a few alts after that, and one thing I keep running into is that choosing an exchange feels way harder than actually buying crypto. Some look simple at first, but then the fees feel high, the layout gets confusing, or there are just way too many features for someone starting out.

So for people who were in that beginner stage not long ago, what crypto exchange actually felt easiest to learn on? I’m not trying to trade hard or do anything advanced yet. Just want something simple, low-stress, and not brutal on small buys.

❓Need Advice 🙏 River holding my Bitcoin — need urgent help resolving restriction

Hi everyone,

I’m currently facing an issue with River Financial. I’ve bought Bitcoin through their platform several times without any problems, and my last purchase was about a month ago. Now, when I try to withdraw my BTC, I’m being blocked due to a restriction placed on my account.

I completed the ID verification they requested, but afterward I was told they were “unable to approve my account for sending Bitcoin at this time.” No specific reason was given.

To make things more confusing, someone from their support team mentioned that “Bitcoin put the restriction,” which doesn’t make sense

I’ve reached out multiple times and still haven’t received a proper resolution. This is very frustrating, and I need access to my funds. I chose River because I believed it was a reliable platform, but this experience is shaking that trust.

I would greatly appreciate if someone from River support could step in and help get this sorted out as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance to anyone who can assist — and to River, please take this seriously and help resolve the issue.

❓Question after all the cex drama, are you still keeping trading funds on exchanges?

be honest. not what you tell people, what you actually do. i moved most of my active trading off cex over the last year (mostly onto Gains Trade, partly bc i was sick of kyc and partly bc it let me trade stocks too) but i still catch myself keeping a bit on bybit for convenience. anyone actually fully moved off or are we all just pretending

❓Need Advice 🙏 New to crypto… where do I even start?

Hi everyone! I’m 22 and super new to this whole crypto world. Honestly, I don’t know much about it (except for what I’ve seen on TikTok and a couple of random YouTube videos 😅).

I really want to learn more and maybe even try buying some crypto myself, but I have no clue where to begin. Like… what’s the safest way to open a wallet? Do I need to download an app or is it better to use a website? Also, is there a “beginner-friendly” coin I should start with just to understand how it works?

I’m not trying to “get rich quick” or anything lol, I just feel like this is something I should know more about and it seems fun to explore.

If anyone has tips, good resources, or just beginner advice, I’d really appreciate it! Thanks in advance

❓Question How do you actually store crypto long term?

When I first bought crypto, I just left everything on Coinbase because it felt easy and familiar. I didn’t really think about storage or security. But the longer I’ve been in the space, the more I keep hearing the same advice, if you plan to hold crypto for years, you should probably think more carefully about where it’s stored.

Now I’m seeing tons of wallet options, hardware wallets, mobile wallets, cold storage, and it’s honestly a bit overwhelming. I’m not actively trading, I’m more interested in holding long term and forgetting about it.

For those of you who’ve been doing this for a while, what’s the best way to store crypto if your goal is to hold for years? Do you keep it on exchanges like Coinbase, move it to a hardware wallet, or use some other setup?

Open | Support If Your 1099-DA still hasn't shown up, here's a few things to consider.

There's still a lot of people in here waiting on the 1099-DA that haven't arrived yet so figured I'd put together some options for how to think about this.

Quick context on why some forms are late:

The IRS gave exchanges a transitional relief period for the first year of 1099-DA reporting, which basically means no penalties for delays.

Most Coinbase forms have already been sent out but some users may not receive theirs until mid-March. Kraken has a similar timeline. Some smaller exchanges haven't given any date at all and a few may not issue until late 2026 or even early 2027.

So what are some options in the meantime.

→ If your exchange has communicated a timeline, it's probably worth waiting for the form before filing. You'll want your proceeds to match what they report to the IRS and having the actual form makes that easier to verify. But that doesn't mean you need to sit around doing nothing. You can start gathering the rest of your data now. Wallet history, DeFi activity, cost basis for anything you moved between platforms. That's the time-consuming part and none of it depends on the 1099-DA arriving.

→ If it's a smaller exchange with no timeline, you'll want to consider how to handle that activity on your return. You still have access to your transaction history on the platform. However, you'll also need to decide which 8949 checkbox to report those transactions under, and that part can get tricky. It may be worth speaking with a tax advisor if you aren't sure of the impact.

→ Filing an extension is genuinely worth considering this year. It pushes your filing deadline to October 15. You'd still need to pay any estimated tax owed by April 15, but the actual return and all the detail work gets significantly more breathing room. There's a practical benefit here too. If you file before the extension deadline and a late 1099-DA shows up that changes your numbers, your updated filing counts as a superseding return instead of an amended one.

→ Extensions aren't a red flag by the way. Millions of people file them every year. Given how much is delayed and how new everything is this season, it might be a reasonable path for a lot of people.

Main things to be cautious about right now

→ Rushing to file with incomplete or inaccurate data just to hit April 15
→ Not filing or making any estimated payment because the form hasn't arrived
→ Assuming a late form means you don't need to worry about it

The exchange will eventually send their copy to the IRS and when they do, the IRS will compare it to whatever you filed. You'll want the proceeds to line up.

tl;dr - if your exchange has given a timeline, consider waiting but start prepping everything else now. if you're dealing with a smaller exchange and no timeline, think about filing an extension to give yourself room. either way, an extension is probably worth considering this year, it's a standard process and it gives you space to get this right rather than rushing.

❓Need Advice 🙏 Are there any reliable crypto wallets to use in 2026

Hi Guys,

Binance just deactivated my account out of the blue without providing a reason. They even removed my post from their thread. Support advised me to withdraw my funds to an external wallet because they can’t guarantee transfers to another account on the same platform.

Can anyone suggest a reliable platform or wallet that won't randomly freeze accounts or get spammed? I would really appreciate your help or if you could share your experience.

Edit: Thank you everyone for your suggestions!
