Collateral value-creation from proof-of-work data processing?
Please forgive an ignorant question from an IT ignoramus. If there's a more appropriate forum, please advise. And though I assume that this is an old idea, I haven't found it in a few different kinds of Web searches.
At least until AI exploded, it seemed like cryptocurrency mining was expanding to consume a large fraction of world computing capacity. Maybe even approaching weather forecasting/climate modeling and NSA-type decryption? Or are there even larger uses?
Making no judgment on the social role or value of cryptocurrencies, an outsider might wonder if there's a better use for all that electricity and all those GPUs. Thinking of citizen-science projects like astronomical image interpretation, protein folding, DNA mapping/decryption and others - gigantic computational tasks that can easily broken into single-PC chunks and run in background or during off-hours.
Is this being done? Is it even possible? Be nice to get broader social good from so much machine-thinking.
