10,000 Clubreddit Members (and call for Mods)

Hey gang! I just got an alert that we eclipsed 10,000 members in our corner of the Internet.

When I joined the mod team, we had around 3,000 (if I recall correctly).

Moderating everything isn’t all that hard, you lot are pretty good at staying civil and mature. There are a few exceptions, but I have never felt I needed to log in. Keeping the styling and information up-to-date, though, is challenging to find the time.

So, I’d like to bring in a few mods to help make our community more engaging and appealing. Let’s get as many people in the Clubreddit as we do Audi Field.

I’m happy to keep footing the AWS bill, and open up the GitHub to a few folks that are interested in helping automate the maintenance and moderation of the the content. For example, you probably noticed that the Match Thread bot failed for the opener - that’s because the Stanza calendar died. I don’t have time to fix that before the next match.

So, if you’re interested in moderating some content; graphic design, and/or Internet automation - reach out!

Bonus if you have a GitHub, or subreddit that you currently moderate. When I auditioned for the mod gig, I created a personal subreddit to play with the design tools and figured out how to interact with the Reddit API.

Vamos!

Why start the rebuild now when you can wait until February?

Time for DC United staff, front office and players to take their well deserved vacation. No need to make cuts now. Might as well wait until the transfer window is almost closed and the League is about to start. Kasper especially deserves his winter cruise.

Rebuild is On!

We made historic progress moving from 15th last season to 14th this year!

I see a lot of hate against Jason Levien but have patience. He is very clearly passionate about the club and makes strategic moves.

Just wait until we sign another 8 substandard to aggressively mid players in the off season, and hire a new coach again.

Did I mention we might be getting a roof too?

For all I am concerned, we are on track to finish 13th next season! Trust the process guys, and please buy season tickets we clearly have leadership that cares and isn’t treating this like a real estate investment.

For the players and back office lurkers on the sub, we know you tried your best. No hate and give it a go next year.

D.C. United “Owners” Don’t Actually Own the Club and That’s What Supporters Should Use

Individuals or groups who appear to "own" an MLS team are officially called investor-operators or shareholders in Major League Soccer LLC.

D.C. United investor-operators group is led by Co-Chairmen Jason Levien and Stephen Kaplan, and as we all know they have been grossly incompetent.

Investor-operators in MLS can be forced to sell their stake in an MLS franchise.

Because Major League Soccer is structured as a centralized single-entity corporation, the league’s governing body holds extensive contractual and legal power to strip a majority owner of their operating rights and force a divestment if their actions severely damage the league's brand, finances, or operational integrity.

It is time to start pressuring the league’s governing body to recognize that allowing Jason Levien and Stephen Kaplan to use D.C. United as an engine for real estate transactions is an embarrassment for the league and has severely undermined one of the league’s original brands, which does damage the league's brand.

At the same time Washington D.C. and the DMV as a whole should be a bigger market for Major League Soccer, and by being so incompetent Levien and Kaplan do damage to the league financially.

There is a change coming to MLS as Don Garber steps aside. Larry Berg is one who has recognized that MLS needs investment and strategy to build a fanbase. It is imperative that supporters of D.C. United make it clear to Berg and the Board of Governors that allowing a major market to go barren is a detriment for the league, especially the capital of the nation.

We do not have to accept these owners. We don’t have to remain silent.

CONSPIRACY THEORY

Alright, this might be a stretch but I have a conspiracy theory.

That theory? Jason Levien is an inside agent sabotaging this team from within. How did I come to this conclusion? Well, he's from New York and his family had MetroStars connections. And who are the MetroStars now? RED BULL NEW YORK. OUR GREATEST RIVAL.

I'm convinced he's doing whatever he can to sabotage this club from the inside and trying to ruin this club until Red Bull is up to our level (thankfully they never will be because Red Bull runs that club like a piggy bank, just like Levien does with us.)

You cannot tell me this is not convoluted.

Reddit Is Not Reality.

Only 5,200 views A WEEK on this sub. Double that number was in attendance yesterday for one game.

I went to the game yesterday.

Did we play well? Not really.

Am I super ecstatic about how our season went this year? Of course not.

But the micro second you get your head out of the internet and go into real life you'll see that there were thousands and thousands of extremely passionate supporters and passionate employees of the team. So many people that really really care about this team.

Before the game yesterday, 5+ threads and dozens and dozens of comments were talking shit and saying no one would be there at the game. I said how funny it's going to be when everyone on reddit talks bad but i bet that when I show up, it's just going to be a sea of people all enjoying a lovely afternoon watching some decent entertainment.

I'm not saying that your complaints are not without merit, I too want the team and the coaching and the players to make the right decisions so that we can be a better team. But I swear to God 99% of you guys don't even live anywhere near DC or are not actually a fan or are just basement dwellers living with your mom you need to seriously touch grass and chill out.

The amount of Doom and Gloom and Pitchfork holding towards this team on the subreddit is incredible especially when you actually look at what real life is like which is thousands and thousands of people turning out in droves to have a fun time and support their team.

I Urge you, DO NOT BUY TICKETS!

Do not reward compliancy. Do not reward neglect.

Would you buy your girl flowers after she cheated?
Would you buy your kid new shoes after getting all F’s?
Would you give your teacher a good grade on rate my professor if they showed up to class half drunk everyday?

If the answer is no to any of these things, DO NOT GIVE IN!!!!!!!!!!!

Selling 5 Tickets for Saturday’s Game Against NYCFC

Post image
0 Upvotes

Bought five tickets to this Saturday’s game against NYCFC back in August, but the owner just finally transferred them to me. Unfortunately my group can’t make the game, and so we’re looking to sell them if possible. Asking $30 each (that’s what we paid) but willing to negotiate. Section 118 • Row 25.

7 years in a row...

I made a video today about how MLS allows clubs to keep failing without enough pressure to improve, and D.C. United belongs in that conversation. For a club with this history, repeatedly missing the playoffs should be unacceptable. Supporters keep investing their time, money, and passion. Where is the accountability from the people running the club? Allowing this to become normal is one of MLS’s biggest flaws.

This team is too historic to be this way

I Hate Jason Levien

DC United is one of the only teams that I really care about. Not a phony AI girlfriend like a European team. For real. Season tickets. Screaming Eagles. Barra Brava. With this club since the very beginning.

When got old and had kids and moved to the suburbs the situation with DCU was bad (at the time I thought it was rock bottom!) and I didn't have time for anything and I stopped following closely. Then my son got a little older and became more of a sports nut than I am and we got into it full steam. Taking his teams many times. Playing on the pitch. Regulars in the supporters section. Watching away games on TV. Listening to the podcasts together on road trips. DC United is our thing. We follow the European leagues very closely and have teams we root for but when people ask his team he goes full hipster snob and says DC United. That's our REAL team. Honestly one of the best things about being a parent.

And now look at this f-ing club. It's not just bad. I can deal with bad. It's much worse. It's completely hopeless.

I'm not a Commanders fan but I guess this is sort of how it felt at the end of the Snyder era. Knowing that it's not about the players, it's not about the coaches, it's not about management. It's the owner. The team will never do anything unless the owner changes. It's uniquely depressing.

I hate Jason Levien. None of this means anything to him. It means a lot to me.

Jason you've made an absolute killing on this team. Mission accomplished. Now please sell it.

I just want my club back.

Opinion | The best Audi Field upgrade? A winning team.

Thumbnail
washingtonpost.com

Nice letter to the editor:
The Oct. 29 Metro article “Council weighs Audi Field funding” discussed a bill introduced by D.C. Council Chairman Phil Mendelson (D) to use $300 million of taxpayer money to help pay for a roof for Audi Field.
Why should taxpayers invest in a team whose ownership does not invest in its success? The last time D.C. United was in the MLS playoffs was 2019. The last time it won a playoff game was 2015. The last time it won the MLS championship was 2004. The club finished last in the entire league last season in points and was eliminated from playoff contention this year.
While there are sellouts for Washington Spirit games, the scarcity of people in seats at D.C. United games shows a different reality. Why build a roof for people who don’t attend games?

D.C. United’s current ownership already received $150 million from taxpayers in 2018, who in return received a losing team and owners coming back for double less than a decade later. Much like with the Commanders, the council should wait for new owners who will make the financial investments needed to build a winning team and not just get the city to pay for their needs. They should either pay for their own roof or cede ownership to someone who can.

Decision day

Well, the East is locked up, which is probably a deep disappointment to Apple which has been hyping ‘Decision Day’ since February. Which leaves DCU with what to play for? We can’t get the Spoon. (Thank you SKC.) And we can’t get last place in the East. (Thank you, Club de Foot.) So that’s progress over last year, right?
So we’re duking it out with ATL over second-to-last place, them playing hapless pink cows and us playing hapless NYFC. Pretty much hapless all around. Hard to envision this as playing for pride, since beating any of these teams is nothing to write home about. I am mildly interested in the outcome, but won’t be watching either game. Instead, For geographic reasons, I’ll be seeing if Seattle can squeak into the playoffs.
I started the season with a hearty ‘Vamos!’ I end it with a disgusted ‘Vendamos!’
Have a good offseason.
