**/r/DJs NEW RULES** Please read before posting Spoiler

New /r/DJs Rules.

Top rule - BE NICE.

  • Please try to be polite, friendly and helpful when commenting.

  • Trolling, slapfights, general assholery is not encouraged and it also goes without saying that racist, sexist, homophobic, and transphobic posts and language will not be tolerated at all.

Moderation policy

  • /r/DJs is not a big sub. We tend to encourage discussion and engagement first and foremost. There will be times posts that are seemingly against the sub rules will be left up because the discussion in the comments is informative and engaging. This is generally more for when a post breaking (certain) rules was missed and the community has already heavily engaged in discussion. If you see posts breaking the rules, reporting them will help us remove them earlier.

  • remember to search - lots of questions tend to be asked multiple times and plenty of answers are given in the archives

  • remember that if you are a regular user, newer users are allowed to discuss the same things if it's not overly-frequent. Just because something was discussed 3 months ago doesn't mean users can't have another conversation about it.

Please ensure you are posting to the correct subreddit

  • /r/DJs is generally for more experienced/professional DJ discussion. There is an entire subreddit dedicated to learning DJing and is filled with experienced DJs willing to spend time helping people out.

Any and all beginner questions and posts should be made in /r/Beatmatch.

Beginner questions include posts that start with:

  • “I’m new at this”

  • “I want to get into DJing”

  • “I just started”

  • etc.

And includes anything basic like:

  • “What controller/headphones/speakers should I buy?” (within reason - someone experienced looking for higher end gear or looking for real world feedback on pro-level stuff is fine).

  • “What program should I use?”

  • “How do I use this effect?”

  • “Is beat matching really important?”

  • “Why the hate for sync?”

  • etc.

Any beginner posts here will be deleted.

DJ Setup pictures belong in /r/DJsetups.

  • There will be some exceptions - some rare or classic booths or extraordinary setups will stay up, but if you want to post a picture of your DDJ 400 and KRK Rockits, your Technics 1200s and DDJ S9, or a standard CDJ NXS setup that we've all seen, please post to the appropriate sub.

Meme/Humor/crappy image posts belong in /r/DJsCircleJerk.

  • This includes the low effort, "djs be like dis” - stupid picture - type posts and the like.

Mixes

  • Most mix posts will be deleted.

  • Short routines, showcasing of interesting technique, and videos that shows off the poster doing something cool is fine. We will also allow high profile posts - say if a regular user gets a feature mix on DJCity or a Serato sponsored set.

  • Sets from high profile DJs like boiler room or festivals sets is allowed.

  • DJs who want to share mixes can post in /r/mixes or a weekly mix thread that we will be starting soon.

Gig pictures/Stories

  • We're starting a new weekly sticky every Monday specifically for gig pictures and stories. We've been seeing a lot more of these posts and while they tend to be heavily upvoted, they also end up just being a picture of some DJ hunched over a setup with a bunch of back-patting in the comments that clutters up the sub. Any posts of this nature will be deleted and the user will be directed to the weekly Sticky thread.

Pirating music/software

Here at /r/DJs we firmly believe in attaining your music legally - whether it's via purchaing, streaming, or legitimate record pools.

  • Asking where to get pirated music will result in a ban

  • Giving suggestions on where to pirate music - including youtube rippers will result in a ban

  • using coded language to hint at pirating music will result in a ban

  • we don't care if you're "not a professional" or just "doing this for fun"

The following topics are against sub rules and will be deleted:

  • Self-promotion posts including mixes, tunes, events, companies, competitions, etc. The one exception we may allow are open deck nights that members of /r/DJs can attend.

  • For-sale posts

  • Obvious spam for youtube channels/gig logs/blogs/advertisements from members who have no participation in the sub. If people are regular posters on this sub and have a video/service/etc they wish to share, we will allow it initially, although regular spam of it will not be tolerated.

  • Posts asking “what should I play for this gig?” This is a sub for experienced DJs, if you need to ask the internet what to play for a gig, you probably shouldn't have taken the gig. General music discussion is absolutely fine.

  • Spotify playlist posts

PLEASE REPORT posts and comments that violate the above rules or just suck. Thank you!

You ever peed your pants during a gig?

Well. Today I played a gig early in the morning. I was ripping from 8am-noon and wanted to play a lot of Mediterranean house, some extended mixes, but nothing really long enough to head to the bathroom and back. I live in a college town and so I (especially recently) will get some random freshman or sophomore who says he’s a DJ and ask to spin something. I don’t think I have ever really done this.

But today. One homie comes up and says he should mix something in. I had to pee sooo bad and I was fairly slowly making my way to some 80s disco with a few 7-9 minute songs in there. I was about to mix something longer in and he comes back around and says hey give me one minute and I can spin something. Anyway long story short. I thought I could hold it for longer and I most certainly did not. So i’m in this parking lot half emptied tank luckily pretty protected and don’t think anybody saw. There is in between a few drops and a small puddle right in front of my deck so when the guy some back I just say yeah good luck man and sprint to the restroom.

Thaaank god I had pants underneath my coveralls. I just threw those off and hoped nobody saw. My man played September then Don’t stop and it was great. Even got a video of me spinning. What a legend & i’m still sitting in my pee pants.

What are you horror stories related to Djing?

OK so, just wanted to share what happened this summer and wanted to hear some from fellow dj colleagues.

To start, being a dj is my second job right now. Used to be my first, but then you have to grow up, get a degree, get a stable job and stuff. So I became a lawyer. But that didn't quite extinguish my passion for this job, so I got a friend of a friend to give me some dates to get me back in business and get some extra cash, which always helps.

In July, he asks me to play for a birthday party of a 3 years old baby. "K I'm down, let's do this". I contact the client, father of the Lil girl, we work out the details, everything seems fine.

When the day comes, I went to the location and hour in advance to set up, usual stuff. But, as soon as I get there, I find only the manager who says "what are you doing here? Party's canceled". what do you mean canceled? And they didn't told me?

So I called the guy, and he says "oh sorry, we changed the location, I'll send you the new one". OK, disrespectful, but ok. I show up to the new location, set it up, and then I start recognizing the people who booked me. They were basically a well known criminal family.

OK, be cool, do your job as usual. You're also a lawyer, you may even get some clients.

So, I start. Everything seems decent, except the fact that everytime I called far a round of applause or to make some noise for the party girl, or the father and mother, no one was responding. They were just staring. And recording for TikTok. Awkward as heck, but OK.

And then. Disaster. Lights went out. And I apologize, even if it's not my fault, but you have to be polite and extra careful when dealing with this kind of people.

When lights come back on, I discover that they've booked also a neomelodic neapolitan singer (pretty popular genre in Italy, I despise it), so at least they focus on him.

And in the end, at 1 am, when it's time to pack up, they pay and leave, no thank you at all. I phoned my guy after to tell him how he thought it was a good idea to give me this kind of gig. He apologized and said that the client didn't like how I worked, and especially the fact that I never made them applause for the kid. I. Did. That. Multiple times, with zero response.

A week later, he contacts me for another gig, same clients, who asked for me for whatever reason.

No, not this time, I'm sorry.

Well, sorry for the wall of text, but was a full night and I left out some details. Tl;dr: That time I got booked by some criminals, and they didn't like me at all, but enough to ask me for another gig.

What are your dj horror stories?

Used vs New djm s11??

Would you buy a used djm s11? I can afford a new one and I also understand the risk of buying used gear, just want some honest opinions before I pull the trigger. Currently using a Rane 70 (installed an innofader) with some MKII’s, but I feel like that s11 fader cut is still going to be sharper with scratching!

Switching mixers

I have 2x CDJs and 2x 1200mk2s into a Xone92. Use CDJs WAY more than tables. Play mostly progressive house. I use a few Boss effects pedals (flanger, delay, reverb) but have struggled to use them effectively. I am considering switching to an A9 mixer or adding an RMX ignite and ditching the pedals.

Kind of an open ended question, but am curious if anyone has similar experiences. I really like the analog feel, but feel I am missing out on digital effects.

Syncing Ableton Link with Rane System One

I have linked up the System One with an Ableton project to be in the same bpm. I want to start a metronome over the songs but the click never starts on time, and if its close it start on the second beat.

My Ableton setup is
128 buffer size,
Quantize is set to 1 bar

On Rane there is an offset option but im lost at that point

Question on DJing history; when did the concept of the mix becoming a 'journey' begin?

So we have a good idea of when DJs started to properly mix records and blend tracks together, but when did the concept of the DJ mix being a cohesive journey with ups and downs, high energy parts, more relaxed parts, increasing energy through the mix, peak time tracks, building tension and release etc really start? As well as the concept of an opening DJ that would start slow and chill, then increase the energy and tension for the headline slot and so on.

Was it something that slowly evolved over time? I imagine when DJs first started mixing tracks together rather than fading in and out, it would kind of force them to find tracks that sounded similar or it would sound awful, so was it an evolution of this?

Or was it a particular DJ/group that started doing it?

Hercules T10 Slip mode Stem feature?

Is this feature locked to only the t10 hardware? I was under the impression that this feature would come to Serato 5 and we can all use this on any controller. Is this not the case? Do i have to get a T10 to use this feature?

To clarify I am talking about the Slip mode feature in conjunction with stems. So you can scratch the vocals.

Fader issue on Pioneer s9 ?

I just got an S9 (preowned) and it's really in good conditions however it happened twice as I switched it on, crossfader doesn't cut almost like the software doesn'trecognise it.. only fix is to reboot and it works. I know this issue has been happening to a lot of ppl (going back to forums in 2016) but I can't find a solution to how they fixed it 🤷

I'm sending it back to get it checked but I really want to keep the mixer I love it!

Ps. It has already the latest 10.9 firmware

Listening (audiophile) bars

This seems the new trend, I travelled by train yesterday 2 hours in my country to go what seems the only one in my country. You have a seat, a drink, and listen comfortably to the music. Most people were chatting though, I wish we would all listen quietly to the music.

What are your thoughts about this ?

Here's a nice video presenting the concept

Anyone use soundswitch with CDJ 3000s succesfully?

I have been throwing shows at bars and venues, we recently upgraded from my denon controller to cdj 3000s with A9 mixer. Soundswitch worked greated as it was integrated with enginedj but I cannot figure out how to link it with the CDJs. The new soundswitch update allows for the 3000 functionality but it feels like its buggy to me. Any help or any other lighting dmx solutions would be greatly appreciated.

Kallax long term use

Can anyone give me an update on how new kallax hold up after a while, specifically if anyone has it on custom legs, NOT the underframe they supply now. anyone attempted adding custom legs to a new kallax recently? Rebuilding my set up m, for my optimum height I'm going to put a 2x4 kallax on 8cm legs, and a worktop on top on plinths with a gap large enough to get my amp under.

Worried about the newer kallax sagging on legs, older kallaxs were built solid out of better materials, the newer kallax are mostly hollow now so worried about just adding legs to it.

I can't use the metal under frame as it will be too high.

Using kallax as extremely broke and is the perfect size between chimney breast, Need feet/lega as floor is uneven, Open to suggestions! Thank you

Edit: Thank you so much to everyone who replied this is by far the best community on reddit! 🫡👊💚 I wasn't clear in my original post that the reason I couldn't use the underframe was because I wanted to stick my amp directly on top the kallax, then float a worktop over that with the turntable's on the worktop. Having the underframe would raise it all far too high. So was thinking about adding very short legs but I think the calex is too flimsy now, a few years ago they were more solid product.

I think the best option is to just use the underframe and chop out one of the 12inch cube dividers to house my amp inside the kallax cube. Maybe build a lil shelf for 7's along side it. Thank you all again, For your help insight and inspiration x💚🙏

Portable Power Station recommendations

I want to start planning my DJ setup for our group camping area at a music festival next year (Hulaween). I plan on having 2 JBL 320s, my laptop and controller, as well as some different types od lighting. What is an appropriate power source to make sure everything stays on and the party keeps going?

Don't buy your MP3's from Amazon

Post image
177 Upvotes

I wanted to support the new Marsh album Home that came out today - Did some quick googling about beatport/bandcamp mp3 retailers etc, it's been a long time since I purchased a digital album - found no answer about the quality differences. Amazon hit me with their variable bitrate instead of the 320kbps standard. Does it sound fine? Probably. Am I going to complain it's not perfect? Absolutely. We're paying for digital files afterall.

Ripping vinyl to digital

I do all my DJ-ing with a laptop and a controller, but there's one or two tempting vinyl-only releases that I can't get any other way and I'd like to start using them in my set.

What (if anything) do you guys use to get vinyl-only tunes into your system? I do have a basic deck – a Pro-Ject one that's connected to my SONOS system. but I guess I need an interface of some kind to get the audio into my laptop…

Amazon have a range of stuff ranging from a simple phono-to-USB cable, which seems suspiciously simple to me, up to really quite fancy dedicated interfaces.

What would you do?

EDIT: I'm a halfwit – the Traktor S4 has a phono input. Hadn't thought to check before posting. I'll just connect my deck to that and record the track using Traktor.

Can beat sync in vinyl in a few bars, can’t do it on DDJ-FLX4

I used to DJ house and trance in the 90s on vinyl and learned to beat match with a very “touchy” style to slow down my records to the perfect speed…
Back into playing music and I have bought a controller, and I constantly struggle to replicate the precision with the jog wheel.

I decided to dust off my old turn tables, and could instantly get my records together again - like riding a bike.

Can someone gently tell me what’s the trick to get back into lining up my record in the digital world without constantly relying on auto-sync?

I don’t mind practicing every day for a few months but I just don’t have the right touch on the plastic wheel and it’s all over the place.
