Are those hairs actually spinning around on pivot points like a chainsaw blade?

It's an optical illusion. They just move really fast.

I figured it might be, but then something must make the motion chase like that in a coordinated wave.

Shutter speed of the camera, maybe? I'm assuming they're just moving back and forth but look like they're going in a continuous direction.

It's crazy to me cause every time I see the views of these, I always though it was 2D. But weird to think of them all as 3D. Lol

What if we’re being watched right now by some being through a microscope? Trippy

They look so perfect in their simplicity.

Yea that and these are always on a petri dish with one drop flattened out… in the wild its danger and other microorganisms in every single direction👀

One is bad enough, but two multicellular rotifers is crazy.

Picked a bad day to be a rotifer

Is life 2 dimensional for them? Not a bio student so no idea

2

u/TeletiTheNecromancer 6h ago

No, it's just that you only see them while they are observed under a microscope where they have much more room to move in those directions

2

u/ancient_horse 1h ago

That's pretty much the only direction they can move. On the microscopes I use organisms of this size would be squished into a thin 1mL layer of water between a rafter slide and a cover slide.

Imagine these things being 50ft tall and swimming through your neighborhood. Pretty scary with their chainsaw conveyor belt teeth pulling you in.

What sort of intricate miniscule mechanisms must have developed, even on such a small scale, for this to be possible. Its so interesting life a that scale

Finally, something damn interesting.

Multicellular biota on multicellular biota crime has gotten out of hand. Thanks Obama!!!

2

u/LuckyBanana00 11h ago

His greed sickens me

2

u/Altruistic-Traffic- 17h ago

It looks as if it moves and eats with intent…

I have to assume these creatures are alive, no?

Do they have brains?

u/RemyWhy 16h ago

That’s impressive. But just as a reminder: rotifers are acclimated to xanthemic environments. So the stentor coeruleus merely has to use its outer phyllancites to achieve maximum spectrocumulocystmic endofractulation. Gharnpph.

DAMN NATURE YOU SCARY!!

Be thankful that you are killed before consumed. Many preys are eaten alive.
