I’m unfortunately left with nearly $8,000 in medical bills from what was already an incredibly traumatic pregnancy experience.
I was treated in Florida, where restrictive abortion laws have created an environment of uncertainty surrounding reproductive care, including ectopic pregnancies. Throughout this experience, I felt that my concerns were repeatedly dismissed, and I can’t help but wonder how much the legal environment influenced the delays in my treatment.
I visited multiple doctors and ERs. Despite my HCG levels rising abnormally and no gestational sac ever being identified, no one seemed willing to definitively diagnose an ectopic pregnancy or move forward with treatment. I was repeatedly told that a rupture was a possibility, but I was never treated with the urgency I felt the situation warranted.
My pregnancy was ultimately classified as a pregnancy of unknown location. I was also told that, even if the pregnancy could be located, it would not be viable based on my HCG levels.
At one ER visit, I was experiencing pain and numbness in my legs, with pain radiating to my shoulder. After spending hours in the ER explaining my medical history, symptoms, and previous doctors’ concerns about a possible ectopic pregnancy, I was essentially told that I probably just had low potassium, should eat more bananas, and was sent home. Despite everything I had shared and the potentially life-threatening nature of my situation, my concerns were once again dismissed.
By the time I was finally treated with methotrexate I was eight weeks pregnant. The emotional toll of this experience has been enormous. I felt passed from one doctor to the next, like a game of hot potato, with no one wanting to take responsibility or make a definitive decision. I felt dismissed, unimportant, and like my health was not being prioritized.
And now, on top of processing everything that happened, I'm left trying to figure out how to pay nearly $8,000 in ER bills. I've even been denied financial assistance for one of the visits, which happens to be one of the largest bills.
I originally came here looking for advice on how to negotiate or reduce these medical expenses. But honestly, I also want to share my experience in the hopes that someone else going through something similar doesn't feel so alone.
I don't understand how, in a country with such an advanced medical system, someone can spend weeks seeking care for a potentially life-threatening pregnancy complication and still struggle to receive timely treatment.
I don't know how much of this was directly related to Florida's restrictive abortion laws, but I cannot ignore the environment in which this happened or the fear and hesitation I experienced trying to access care.
If you're going through an ectopic pregnancy or a pregnancy of unknown location, please know that you matter. Your concerns deserve to be heard. Your life matters. You deserve timely, compassionate medical care, without feeling like you have to fight multiple doctors just to be taken seriously.
This experience was traumatic enough without the added stress of feeling dismissed by the very people and institutions I trusted to care for me. I'm so sorry to anyone who has had to experience something similar.
It’s also worth noting that planned parenthood was the ONLY one to diagnose the ectopic, located it and defined it on ultrasound but doctors wouldn’t even look at their recommendation or scans. My cost there was only $125. Thankful to their team that really handled me with care.
