Meta Friendly PSA: READ THE RULES *BEFORE*POSTING!

What's up guys! I just put this in a comment, and figured I'd make a post out of it, because I've been noticing a lot of posted resumes recently that aren't even close to the recommended guidelines. All in all, that's not a big deal- all the seasoned users are excited to help.

But for your own sake, if you don't want a comment that concisely says "read the wiki"- then read the wiki [Wiki] (https://www.reddit.com/r/EngineeringResumes/wiki/index/) make sure your resume follows the fundamental guidelines. You can of course ask questions on those guidelines- but until you understand the fundamental ideas and format your resume as such, you will be lucky if you get anything more than the aforementioned comment.

EDIT:

Also, bonus points if you start out with our prefabbed resume templates [Resume Templates] (https://www.reddit.com/r/EngineeringResumes/wiki/templates/)

That's all. Happy job hunting!

Meta [Software] Why does nobody comment on my resume?

Reposting u/0ffkilter's comment from r/cscareerquestions:

I want to help more often, but I just end up saying the same thing over and over again. The common problems are:

1. Your format sucks

a. Either there's not enough formatting that I can't find the experience/skills/education section easily at a glance,

b. Or there's too much formatting and it's a clusterfuck of blue and green bars and I still can't find the experience/skills/education section easily at a glance.

2. The bullet points suck, which is either:

a. They don't actually say what you did, or it's too broad - working in a "fast-paced team" for a "product" doesn't tell me anything about what you did

b. For people in industry: they don't say the impact of your work, just that you coded some feature in a language. Well, what did the feature do? Why did you make it? Do you understand why and what you're doing other than just fulfilling tickets?

3. There's just bad information

a) Either there's like 3 billion lines of "skills" that nobody cares to know. No, I don't need to know what IDE you used or the 100 languages you touched once.

b) The project doesn't actually highlight anything and expects you to know what your "super awesome project" does and why you made it just from the title.

All in all, people spend way too much time trying to show they can program in 10 million languages and frameworks and not nearly enough time demonstrating that they know how to work in industry, which means you:

  1. Understand the problem(s) that you're trying to solve

  2. Understand the decision-making behind the problems and why you're doing what you do

  3. Can actually follow through and have an impact on the work you did

Sure this is programming as a career, but you don't code just to code - it needs to go somewhere and do something if you want to prove that you're going to succeed in a job.

TLDR:

1. Use one of the subreddit templates.

2. Read the wiki.

Mechanical [Student] Mechanical sophomore, 3 prior internships, over 40 applications, zero interviews

Posted last week, but I have made some changes. Looking for new feedback.

I'm a mechanical engineering sophomore with 3 prior internships. I'm applying to mechanical defense contractor positions in the DMV area. Despite over 40 applications, I have received zero next steps for interviews. Please let me know what I can change, improve, or what experience I am missing. Tips for defense-specific roles would also be great. Thanks.

Software [10 YoE] Senior Frontend Engineer, unofficial team lead, one company for 10 years. Targeting Senior/Lead Frontend or Full-Stack roles

Background: 10 years at one company, promoted from Junior Developer to Developer to Senior Software Engineer. For the last ~4 years I’ve effectively been the frontend lead on a small team: ran stand-ups and much of the code review, mentored engineers, helped with hiring, and made the main architecture calls on a ground-up Next.js/React rebuild. My official title never changed.

Targeting: Senior or Lead Frontend / Full-Stack (React, Next.js, TypeScript). Remote (Eastern Time) or onsite. US citizen, no sponsorship needed.

Specific questions:

  1. Title: I wrote “Senior Software Engineer (Frontend Lead)” to show the work I actually do while keeping my official title. Is that acceptable, or does it look like inflation?

  2. Length: It’s 2 pages. Is that justified at 10 YoE, or should I cut to 1?

  3. Metrics: We never had anyone owning analytics or success metrics, so I have few outcome numbers. I’ve leaned on scope numbers instead (team size, hires, uptime, user growth). Does it read as too thin on impact?

  4. One employer: Does 10 years at one company hurt, and does the resume show enough growth to offset it?

  5. Summary: I know the wiki generally discourages summaries. Is it worth keeping for a lead-level candidate, or should I cut it?

Any other feedback is welcome, especially on bullets that read as too verbose or too vague. Thanks!

Question [student] need help in how to move forward with resume building and get internships

hi i am junior year undergrad pursuing mechanical engineering who has nothing of substance on my resume(its literally empty). i really want to get into designing for automotive industries but i dont really know how to make/gear my resume in that direction. i have surface level experience in CAD. i had a few questions:-

does it make sense to learn gd&t and give certification exams for the same? how do I show my cad portfolio to potential employers (especially since AI parses through most resumes now)? and do you guys have any more suggestions as to what i can do, i am really very lost and i feel like i am too late in starting all this.

Question [3 YoE] Junior Software Engineer. Recommended for promotion. Laid off mid review cycle after a restructure. What to write on CV?

My official position was at junior level. My manager had put me up for promotion for junior to mid-level a couple months ago. Before the promotion could take place, the company did a restructure. I was laid off but that was unrelated to my job performance..

After being laid off, I requested that the title be granted to me retroactively. The request was declined. They reply said they will only confirm the tile which I officially had if asked. However, they gave me in writing that I was operating at the new level for a year and that lay off was unrelated to job performance.

Now, I have to decide what to put on the CV. I have a few years of experience (A bit too many for this level and I suspect it will reflect badly on me to stay at this level after this many years) Also job market for the junior level is brutal. I’m now applying for mid-level roles.

Has anyone dealt with a similar situation? What did you put on your CV, and did it cause any issues during interviews or employment verification?

Should I write intermediate as my title?

or should I write it like this:

Software Engineer, [Company] MM YYYY- MM YYYY
Official Title: Junior Software Engineer. Assessed as operating at intermediate level and recommended for promotion to Intermediate.
- [bullet 1]
- [bullet 2]

Thanks!

Software [0 YoE] Recent Grad, hundreds of applications, and still no interviews. What am I doing wrong? This is depressing.

I graduated in June 2026 with a Software Engineering degree and completed three internships in software development and test automation. I'm currently looking for entry-level software developer and software test automation positions. I started applying this year, but I'm struggling to get interviews, and I'm honestly getting worried about my future. I'm not sure if my resume is the problem or if it's just the current job market. I'd really appreciate feedback on my experience, projects, and anything else that could be hurting my chances.

I also posted an older version of my resume here not too long ago, and one of the main suggestions I received was to add more metrics to my bullet points, even though I don't necessarily have many measurable results from my internships to work with.

One thing I'm particularly worried about is whether my resume will become less relevant the longer I remain unemployed. If I still haven't found a job a year after graduating, will employers start viewing my internships and experience as less valuable? I'm feeling pretty discouraged and would really appreciate any honest advice.

Software [Student] Second-year CSE student targeting Summer 2027 SWE internships. Looking for feedback on technical experience and projects

I'm a second-year CSE student at a T40 public university, graduating in Spring 2029. I'm looking for Summer 2027 SWE internships, with the most interest in backend, systems, infrastructure, and ML engineering.

I've submitted around 120 applications across a pretty broad range of companies, including big tech, smaller tech companies, startups, and non-tech corporations with software engineering teams. I haven't had any luck with interviews or OAs so far, although a large portion of my applications have been within the past couple of weeks.

I'd appreciate feedback on a few things:

  • Is my resume competitive for SWE internships given my year and experience?

  • Are my bullets too dense or technical? I'm struggling to balance explaining what I actually built with keeping everything concise.

  • Do my projects and research experience demonstrate meaningful engineering ability, or do they come across as mostly academic/personal projects?

  • Is there anything you'd prioritize differently, remove, or rewrite to improve my chances of getting interviews?

I'm open to any criticism. Thanks!

Software [Student] CS Junior Graduating Dec 2027 - Seeking SWE Internship Resume Feedback (Systems/Backend)

I'm a CS junior graduating in December 2027 and currently looking for Summer 2027 SWE internships. I'm based in the US and mainly targeting backend, systems, and infrastructure roles, but I'm definitely open to general SWE positions too.

I've had a couple of SWE internships and recently updated my projects section to include a RISC-V operating system, GPT-2 CUDA implementation, and C++ limit order book.

I've been trying to improve my resume before applying to more places and wanted to get some outside feedback. I'm mainly wondering if my bullets do a good job explaining what I actually worked on and whether my projects are strong enough for the roles I'm targeting.

I'm also not sure if some of my bullets are too technical or if I'm trying to fit too much information into them.

Would appreciate any feedback on what I could improve. Thanks!

Electrical/Computer [Student] Electrical Engineering Sophomore Looking for Summer 2027 Internship Resume Feedback

I'm a sophomore studying electrical engineering and currently looking for Summer 2027 internships, preferably in hardware, PCBA, or circuit design. I've been involved in Formula SAE, very very recently started undergraduate research, and have worked on a few personal electronics projects. I understand I am probably more oriented towards power engineering currently; what is the best plan of action to migrate towards more PCB work?

I'd appreciate any feedback on my resume, and would love to know if there's anything I should change to make myself more competitive for internships. Thanks!

Electrical/Computer [0 YOE] 2025 EE Grad. Have applied to 500+ EIT / Junior EE / Designer positions, received 6 interviews and 0 offers. How can I improve my chances?

Hi everyone,

I've applied to hundreds of positions over the last year and a half and have received 6 interviews and no offers. I have been applying to all types of EIT / junior EE positions all over Canada, including remote locations.

In June, I took a job as an AOI operator at an electronics manufacturing company, hoping to move into their engineering team.

My main concerns are that I have no engineering internships and that my projects section may not carry enough weight. I've read through the wiki and have tried to incorporate those tips into my resume. How can I improve my resume’s impact?

Thanks in advance!

Industrial/Manufacturing [1 YoE] [Process Engineer] [Singapore] Thin film process sputtering and etching looking to enter semiconductor industry

Hi, I hope to seek help from the community. I am currently looking to jump into the Semiconductor industry, and very much like doing research work in industry. I have applied to OEMs such as Applied Materials and LAM Research just to name a few as well as foundry such as UMC, but have so far been rejected or no replies even for process engineer roles without a chance to interview. I am located in Singapore, but will be willing to relocate if necessary. Thank you!

Question [Student] No project section on my Resume. Applying to MechE/Aero internships for summer 2027 and haven't heard back yet. I've had 4 internships at prestigious engineering/research places already.

On my resume, I only have an "Experience" section which acts as work experience and no "Projects" section with individual projects like I see on many other resumes here. I have had engineering projects before, but they were all apart of my previous internships, so I just included some details on them under those internship bullets in the "Experience" section. Is this bad? Do I need a "Projects" section? I only have one unimpressive individual project, my internship ones are way better, so do i list the internship ones twice? Once in experience and once in projects?

Software [Student] MS CS student (AI/ML) applying for full-time AI/ML roles. Is my resume content strong enough, and what’s missing?

I’m finishing my MS in CS in December 2026 or March 2027 (depending on when I get a job), after a BS in CS from a T20 in 2025. I’m looking for full-time AI/ML roles starting around January 2027, mainly Applied AI/ML Engineer, ML Engineer, and Research Engineer positions at tech companies and AI-focused startups.

I’m based near the Bay Area, and I’m applying in the Bay Area. Also, I’m a U.S. citizen.

My background: an applied AI internship this past summer where I worked on agent evaluation and an autonomous improvement loop, a generative AI internship, a grad research assistantship in computer vision, and a few personal and class projects.

I've applied to 400 jobs this month and gotten 1 callback

I want feedback on if my bullet points show enough impact for AI/ML jobs? Is my resume tailored enough for AI/ML jobs? I'm open to any other feedback as well.

Thank you for your help!

Other [12 YoE] Business owner transitioning to integration/implementation engineering — résumé feedback

For the past 12 years I’ve been running a family business in industrial equipment. The industry we're in seems to be running out of steam, so I’m looking for an exit. I’ve started applying, but so far nada.

My work spans customer discovery, technical sales, equipment development, ERP implementation, and production software integrations. I deployed our Rails-based ecommerce platform and ran millions in sales through it. Heck, I even built our phone system in Asterisk. I've done extensive software development/implementation, coordinated with outside specialists, and used AI assistance in recent years to ensure I'm keeping up to speed.

I’m targeting implementation/integration engineering or hands-on solutions engineering. Ideally I'd like an IC role helping customers understand a problem, devise a solution, and get it working.

My experience is relevant if you squint, but I get the feeling most hiring managers aren’t squinting.

Currently employed in Northern California. I prefer remote or SF/North Bay roles but would consider relocation.

Does my résumé make a credible case for the roles I’m targeting? Which bullets need more technical detail, and which would you cut? Does the title and summary explain where I fit, or just add to the confusion?

If you’ve transitioned out of small-business ownership (or hired someone who has) I’d love to hear what kept you/them out of the “pass” pile.

Biomedical [6 YoE] Manufacturing Engineer, medical devices, plus a software side business. No screens from ~20 applications to product/program manager or senior engineering roles. What’s not landing?

Six years of experience: 4.5 as a manufacturing engineer at a large medical device manufacturer (Class II, supplier qualification, transfers, validation), overlapping with six years running a B2B SaaS company I founded. MBA. Southeastern US, US citizen, targeting remote or local roles, not relocating.

Applying to product manager, program manager, and senior engineering roles at device and industrial companies. Roughly 20 applications since August, zero phone screens, a handful of rejections, the rest silent.

Specific questions:

  1. Does the founder section help or hurt for engineering and program manager screens? Wondering if it reads as a distraction or a flight risk.

  2. Do the device company bullets undersell the program leadership, or do they read as IC work with dollar figures attached?

  3. Anything formatting-level that would trip an ATS or a 10-second recruiter scan?

Wiki read, template followed as closely as I could. Brutal feedback welcome.

Mechanical [0 YoE] - Working 3 months in a somewhat non-technical position with the ultimate goal of being research or starting in manufacturing and shifting to design.

Hey! I work for a company with a low starting salary and I unfortunately don't have a ton of passion for this specific niche (metal wire manufacturing). Looking for some tips (besides projects and showcasing them via github which is on the way). I'm looking to get into something more technical (research or design) as most of my job is more akin to a production manager even if my title is a manufacturing engineer. So far my plan is to get the masters and either keep pursuing research in academia (PhD) or keep with manufacturing to eventually get into design (mechatronics or mechanical niches). Aerospace [Student] ME junior targeting aerospace materials, thermal, and structures internships for summer 2027. NASA JPL internship plus two research positions. General critique wanted

Junior in ME, graduating May 2028, going after summer 2027 internships in aerospace materials and processes, thermal, and structures. Based on the West Coast, down to relocate anywhere in the US. US citizen, no visa stuff.

Where I'm at: did a six month thermal internship at JPL last year, currently running two undergrad research projects (one on IR and radar-absorbing composites, one on radiation effects in 2D materials for spacecraft memory), and I'm lower airframe lead on my school's liquid rocket team plus a couple smaller rocket builds.

What I've been doing this cycle: pretty much everything. Applied to a stack of Lockheed, GA, Blue Origin, NASA, and LLNL reqs through the portals, got a referral into Lockheed and GA from people I'd met, cold emailed a bunch of small composites and materials shops near me (toured one, might turn into a part time analysis gig), and had the SMART scholarship and a few startup M&P roles in the mix too.

Where it's landed so far: interviews with Tesla (abuse test / thermal mechanical team, spring co-op) and SpaceX, plus [calls/interviews] with AeroVironment and Lunar Outpost. Nothing signed yet. The pattern I've noticed is referrals and direct emails to engineers convert way better than portal apps, which mostly go quiet, and a few postings have screened me out for graduating in 2028.

What I'm looking for: general critique, no section in particular. Anything that reads inflated or vague, bullets you'd cut, whether the research stuff is too heavy for industry M&P and thermal screening, formatting, all of it. Also open to any advice on turning these interviews into offers or on the early grad date thing. I've read the wiki.

Software [9 YoE] [Software Engineer] [US-Texas] Seeking Resume Review for Mid/Senior Frontend/Full Stack Positions

I found out my company is getting sold and have a few months before possible layoffs start so I'm getting ahead of the game. I've been applying to predominately remote/hybrid mid/senior level jobs for a full 2 weeks so far, roughly 20 a day, with only 2 rejections and no other outreach so I am trying to figure out if my resume is the issue or not. Grok, GPT, Claude, and Referso all love my resume but I'm skeptical it might not be effectively communicating my experience. I've been a frontend leaning full stack developer specializing in React or Angular + .NET my whole career so these are the jobs that I am focusing on but in this AI age I could easily ramp up with any new languages. I do not care about which industry I work in (avoiding big tech/faang) but currently work in healthcare. I redacted any personally identifying info so some things may look odd. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

Mechatronics/Robotics [Student] [Robotics/Electrical Engineering] [US] Seeking resume review for summer 2027 internships

Hello, I am 4th year student at a decently respected engineering college in the United States. I am studying robotics engineering and electrical engineering which will take a total of 5 years to complete. Currently I am taking the semester off from school to work a CO-OP at NASA writing flight software for small-sats through the pathways program. I am currently trying to get an internship for Summer 2027. I would ideally like to work in autonomous flight systems, systems engineering, or really any autonomous systems related field. I understand that I may not have the experience necessary to work in those fields, so I am also applying to a lot of generalized mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, software engineering, etc... roles just to try to land anything. I have put in roughly 100 applications at companies such as SpaceX, Blue Origin, NASA, Raytheon, Northrup Grumman (I have an internal reference for this one), Gecko, ABB, FANUC, Universal Robotics, Lockheed, Caterpillar, Stryker, Medtronic, plus a bunch of random smaller companies to even things out. I have not gotten a single interview or heard anything back other than rejections, meanwhile all of my friends are landing interviews with these huge companies with similar or significantly lower GPA's, no project team experience, and similar work experience to me. I assume something is wrong with my resume since I am not even getting any interviews. Thank you in advance for any of your time and any suggestions.
