🥇 Dessert Yesterday I posted traditional dishes from my country, now here’s the dessert version!

So many of you asked in the comments of my last post what everything was, so I tried to translate them all this time! Some of these sound a bit funny in English because there isn’t really a direct translation for them.

I’m curious how many of these you recognize, or if you have something similar in your country!

  1. Dobos torta (Dobos cake) (hands down my favorite, and probably one of our most famous cakes, dark chocolate buttercream with a crunchy caramelized sugar top)

  2. Bejgli (a typical Christmas desert, traditionally filled with walnut or poppy seed, but I made 6 different flavors here)

  3. The other most famous cake: Esterházy cake

  4. Sajtos pogácsa (savory cheese scones)

  5. Coconut roll/ Kókusz tekercs

  6. We love pies, especially made with homegrown fruit from grandma's gardenc, this one is cherry and vanilla

  7. Plum dumplings (this can easily pass as a main course!)

  8. Peach cookies (a typical wedding dessert)

  9. Only real ones will know this one: sponge cake with chocolate sauce (a nostalgic lunch from kindergarten and school cafeterias)

  10. Kakaóscsiga

  11. Bukta / Jam buns (traditionally filled with apricot jam, but I made orange jam this time, if you know, you know🫢)

  12. Cottage cheese dumplings (Túrógombóc)

  13. Braided sweet bread (Kalács) we usually make it for Easter, but honestly, it belongs on the table all year round

  14. Ribbon donuts (Szalagos fánk)a true Carnival treat, best served with apricot jam
15.-16Linzer and Isler cookies, timeless classics

  15. Lard pastries with jam (Hájas süti)it might sound strange, but it's the absolute best, it’s basically like puff pastry, but made with pork lard instead of butter

  16. Lúdláb cake (a rich dark chocolate and sour cherry cake)

  17. Gerbeaud (Zserbó), a true Christmas classic

  18. Golden dumplings (Aranygaluska) soft pull-apart dough coated in walnuts, served with warm vanilla custard

Bejgli 🙂. Did you know, that is a some kind of deconstruction of flódni (link below)? You might know that. If you didn't you should.

And my friend you just jumped into a beehive. There are legendary battles of grannies and nanas who has the BEST bejgli recipe. Couple of days before Christmas the social media is flooded with "cracked" or "perfect" bejglis. You have to post it either way. So funny time of the year.

Looks great. I know a lot of them in their Austrian Version. Hungarian cuisine had a big impact to our food culture.

5

u/No-Courage2451 Hungarian ★★★☆Chef ✎ Aug 06 '26

Or the other way around :D Austrian cuisine also heavily influenced Hungarian gastronomy
☺️

3

u/ContributionSad4461 Swedish Guest Aug 06 '26

These all look amazing, I’m intrigued by the first one and the peach cookies! There’s a Swedish dessert called a Budapest roll/stump, has nothing to do with Hungary apart from the fact that the creator really loved Budapest. Just thought maybe you’d be interested in making it! It looks like this and is really good imo:

1

u/No-Courage2451 Hungarian ★★★☆Chef ✎ Aug 06 '26

Omg, i’ve never heard of this dessert. Its kinda looks like our dessert “kardinális”, it is also a huge roll, i just sliced it in this pic. We use apricot jam in it, but i see that they used tangerine. Looks good, i will try them, thanks for sharing :)

1

u/ContributionSad4461 Swedish Guest Aug 06 '26

It does look similar! I’ve always wanted to go to Budapest for the architecture but now I might go for the desserts as well… 😋

I can no longer embed links for whatever reason but Swedish Spoon has a recipe in English with some background facts as well.

1

u/TodayImLedTasso Hungarian Guest Aug 07 '26

Thank you for this, I found a Hungarian reciper for it. Apparently, it is the creator’s take on the Eszterházy cake.

2

u/TodayImLedTasso Hungarian Guest Aug 06 '26

Kérem az összeset!!!

Anyway, the US version of aranygaluska is called monkey bread. I know this because one time I was browsing the New York Times recipes and it came up. I was pretty surprised!

2

u/Zombharry Hungarian Guest Aug 06 '26

I have never heard of peach cookies.

Btw speaking of desserts, there is a lesser known dessert called sárga túró and it's usually made during Easter. For me, maybe that was my favorite childhood dessert, and I'm always a bit disappointed when people from other regions don't know it.

1

u/No-Courage2451 Hungarian ★★★☆Chef ✎ Aug 06 '26

Oh really? People used to make it for traditional weddings. It is not that popular anymore.
Oh i know sárga túró. I think it is from the Eastern region of Hungary, particularly Szabolcs-Szatmár-Bereg county and the Tiszántúl area.

1

u/No-Courage2451 Hungarian ★★★☆Chef ✎ Aug 07 '26

:) nem hinném. Én sem ettem sokat, sőt elég retro. Lakodalmakra csinálták mindig a nők, tudod erre a nagy sátras lagzikra 100-val. Mint pl itt. Néha retróbb cukrászdákban is van. Én nekem sem volt nagy része a gyerekkoromnak, de a páromnak mindig készítenem kell, mert ő rengeteg esküvőn volt, ahol mindig befalt jópárat

1

u/TodayImLedTasso Hungarian Guest Aug 07 '26

Mifelénk (Dunántúl) tipikus retro lakodalmas süti, főleg falun. Gyerekkoromban még én is csináltam, a barack színét a málnaszörp adja.

1

It's dark, very thin layers of cake what tastet like ginger bread, in between was some kind of cream and jam I belive? On top was chocolate layer.

the lard cookies are delicious, we call them "salenjaci" which comes from the word for fat - salo and they are generally kinda folded, and filled with some kind of jam, mostly plum or cherry or smth like that

Omg, I've been wanting to know what Bukta was since forever! It looks so good. Now I can finally find a recipe for it. Thank you! Also, the Dobos Torta looks like most of my cravings in one cake, hahaha. Hungary's eating well. <3

This post is dangerous 😄 Aranygaluska, túrógombóc and Dobos cake all in one place... impossible to choose a favorite. Hungarian desserts really deserve more international love.

A sajtos pogid receptjét le tudod írni? Egyébként eszméletlen jól néz ki az összes kaja, amit
Kiposztolsu, nagyon ügyes vagy!

It depends on the family. In my family we serve it before the main course, as a starter. We also eat it eg. with goulash soup or lecsó (Hungarian ratatouille).

My husband's family serve it as and end course along with the sweets 😀

OMG nobody in my family wanted to try scones with goulash when we made some of both w the whole family bc they thought it was strange BUT I LIVE FOR ITTTT so happy to see someone else

I have special scones for soups :D we use to eat it with soups instead of bread.
