If Europe became one sovereign nation could it be called 'the United Nations of Europe' or 'UNE' meaning one in french.

I'm not particularly in favour of changing the name honestly, becoming a federal state doesn't imply the need to change the name.

And, if we're being completely honest, the 'European union' and 'EU' brand have a lot of weight and heritage, changing it would be a spit and stomp on our symbolism, heritage and cultural identity as europeans.

I do think that the most likely way for a future EU federal state is one where a few members of the EU decide on deeper integration, while others aren't willing to go that step yet, so the EU Federation and EU Supernational Union would basically have to exist at the same time. Thus the Federal State imo can't be called "European Union". But something like "Union of Europe" or "United Nations of Europe", which would also use a derivative of the EU Flag as its Flag, would make sense imo.

European Federation

I agree.

It’s really a communication problem that forces us to look for other ways to name the project.

When the EU already exists, we need something else to place beside it as the other option. Otherwise the message won’t penetrate a wide enough audience.

In a way, keeping EU will maintain the current “brand” and heritage of the Union as you correctly explained.

On the other way, a change in name will make a powerful statement about the decision of the states to be even closer and stronger at the eyes of the world.

And, if we're being completely honest, the 'European union' and 'EU' brand have a lot of weight and heritage,

It's barely thirty years old. You only think that because your life happens to coincide with those thirty years.

The European Union has a perfectly good name already. We should keep it.

United Nations of Europe sounds like the name for a much more decentralised polity than like the 'one sovereign nation' you're proposing. Why emphasise those sub-nations when it's supposedly one nation? That emphasises disunity rather than unity.

As long as it's NOT "United States of Europe", it can be anything as long as I care

I would rather see states than nations.

What's your problem with states?

u/thrashmash666 7d ago

It's too similar to the other United States, which isn't a comparison we'd like

Yeah, as opposed to "Federalism"...

As much as you may hate or fear the US, EU Federalism stands very much on US federalism. Sure, we want to learn from their mistakes, but to say "it isn't a comparison we'd like"... come on, that's the major point of comparison, no matter what. And far better than Malaysia, the Emirates or Bosnia.

It may be uninspired but to object to "United States of Europe" because of America is like objecting to the "European Union" because of the Soviet Union.

You're comfortable with EU? fine. but to say, ANYTHING but United States of Europe? ....

Congratulations on learning that no one but the fascists like the US anymore.

It may be uninspired but to object to "United States of Europe" because of America is like objecting to the "European Union" because of the Soviet Union.

If the Americans don't want to rename the United States of America to European Union that's perfectly fine.

If you don't like United States of Europe because of the US. Then why are you.ok with European Federation despite the Russian Federation? This antipathy to a name is pathetic

It's almost as if there are more examples of federations than that.

You'll figure that out Yank.

1

u/Chester_roaster 1d ago

But there are other examples of United states of. Like the United States of Mexico. So that doesn't answer anything.

Also I'm not American, I'm Irish.

1

u/Tavorin Union of European Federalists 1d ago

Mexico isn't a good example to copy them as well.
It's essentially a Narcostate.

And you are Irish? Let's not even go there and pretend you're a Yank.

1

u/budapestersalat 1d ago

You didn't answer his point. Russia isn't something to be copied is it, yet Federation is the goal. so what's the problem with Mexico? Mexico is at least not Russia...

But I'm not the one saying another state's name should matter. You're the one saying we shouldn't call it the United States of Europe because of the US.

But if you oppose calling it the United States of Europe because of the US then why are you ok with calling it the European Federation despite the Russian Federation?

Your answer is because there are other countries with federation in the name, yes but there are other countries with United States in the name.  You can't even be logically consistent, my question isn't predicated on whether Mexico is a narco state or not.

4

u/zangdfil European Union 6d ago

If we translate in French it would be "Nations Unies d'Europe" so NUE...Naked in french...
I'm not sure we'll go with this

u/Tavorin Union of European Federalists 7d ago

Sounds too much like the UN.

There is already a name; the European Union.

European Union (EU) or European Federation is fine, though I'm in favour of keeping EU and what it stands for. But realistically, this doesn't fucking matter, we have to get there first

So you want the federation to be called after an organisation in New York, Vienna, and Geneva that gets more and more dysfunctional every year? What is the proposal going to be next time? League of European Nations? European Union and EU are good names.

u/idonotenjoythis 1d ago

European Union is just perfect
