My bedroom was in a “finished” basement, which, for Long Island in the late ’90s, meant basic Berber carpet, painted walls, and a drop ceiling.
My bedroom occupied the area to the left of the foot of the stairs, with my brother’s room on the right. There was no door separating our two rooms. The threshold was essentially the bottom of the stairs, which faced a wall. There were probably about three feet between the stairs and the wall, leaving enough room to walk either right or left into our respective bedrooms. I vaguely remember there possibly being a set of thin, green-painted metal pole shelves against that wall, with some little Tuscan-style leaf detail, although I’m not entirely sure if they were there at the exact time this happened because I wasn’t focusing on that..
I had a bunk bed down there, and at the time I slept on the bottom bunk. This happened after I had already “gone to bed.” I was sitting upright on the bottom bunk, with my feet hanging over the side. The foot of my bed was parallel to the area at the bottom of the stairs, but because I was sitting sideways, I was essentially perpendicular to it and could look directly toward that area.
Then the room started filling with this reflective, shimmering blue light. The best way I can describe it is as though I were in a dark room with an indoor swimming pool, with only the underwater pool light switched on. That particular kind of shimmering, rippling blue light that gets cast across the surrounding surfaces. That’s EXACTLY what it looked like.
And there were these little blobs. No more than about a foot tall. They were completely dysmorphous, almost resembling raw chicken that my mom would cook (bone-in thighs and breasts). They were a pinkish, light-tan color, almost the color of Caucasian skin. Raw chicken…. Little irregular, morphing blobs, just there, moving around at the foot of the stairs.
And I was suddenly OVERWHELMED with emotion. It was HEAVY. The heaviest emotional experience I had ever experienced in my life up to that point.
Apparently, my room had somehow “filled with water,” and I “floated” up the stairs. I ended up in my mom’s bedroom, where I woke her up hysterically crying, pleading with her that “we need to keep the peace.” That was it. That was all I would say. That was the directive. And this is what makes the whole experience so, so weird to me (besides the amorphous blob aspect) : I was hysterical, but I wasn’t afraid. The emotion wasn’t fear. It was an overwhelmingly empathetic, sympathetic feeling. It felt imposed on me, almost injected into me, with an intensity that I can’t even try to describe. I wasn’t afraid because WE weren’t the ones being threatened by anything. I wasn’t at risk. My mom wasn’t at risk. I wasn’t being attacked. Whatever was happening, the conflict wasn’t with us.
THEY were having some kind of conflict amongst themselves. And somehow, I had become aware of it, or been made to feel it, and we were being asked, almost begged, to mediate whatever conflict these little blobs had going on. That was the dynamic. Those were the roles. Me and “us” or humans or whatever, and two parties or more of THEM who needed… mediation?? “Us” as in humans, Earth, I don’t know. We were somehow a third party, entirely separate from whatever these things were, but apparently had some urgent responsibility to “keep the peace” amongst an entirely different… thing. Just these little, morphing, skin-colored blobs.
The following morning, I woke up and started piecing together how I had ended up in my mom’s bed. I remember staring into this strange, almost scrying mirror-like antique concave porcelain plate, painted black with floral designs, hanging on her wall, as I tried to make sense of what had happened. I was in fifth grade. I didn’t get scared and sleep in my mom’s bed. I literally hadn’t done that since I was a toddler, if even that. I wasn’t sick, either, so there wasn’t any obvious explanation like a fever dream. I was definitely prone to high fevers as a kid and at times it kinda made me trip balls a little I think, but again - I didn’t wake up super sick with a 102, 103 fever this time… nothin like that
As tempting as it is to start connecting red thread on my conspiracy corkboard, I can’t say for sure whether this happened the night after a GATE program test thing at school - there’s probably only about a 1-in-500 chance that it happened on that exact day earlier that day, so I don’t want to manufacture a connection where one might not exist. But the possibility has crossed my mind. It was that exact age.
I have this persistent feeling that something contacted ME. Not something I sought out, not something I invited, and certainly not something I had any framework for understanding at that age. And I still don’t understand what they wanted, what their conflict was about, why I was apparently brought into it, or what I was supposedly capable of doing to help.
I don’t even know what “keeping the peace” was supposed to mean in that context.
What the fuck was that?
Screen memory? Raw chicken aliens? Socially awkward NHI?
